Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

rte summary, last line is the clincher http://www.rte.ie/news/2017/0214/852627-education-curriculum-religion/

    IT http://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/legal-obstacles-flagged-over-subject-on-world-religions-in-primary-schools-1.2975464
Plans to introduce a new subject on world religions and ethics in primary schools have been watered down in the face of concerns it could challenge the ethos of denominational schools.

im not sure if this is the case they are looking for time because some say that is a problem so they want to merge it with Social Personal and Health Education which i don't think is a terrible idea, although thats aside from the church not wanting it in their schools at all.

I'll agree they don't seem to be in a hurry

IE Law may hamper course on religions in primary school http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/law-may-hamper-course-on-religions-in-primary-schools-442963.html ok change the law

INDO http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/education/new-plan-on-religion-and-ethics-to-appease-church-35452729.html which mentions this ESRI report http://www.esri.ie/pubs/BKMNEXT324.pdf

This is very bad news. It looks like ERB as a new school subject on the national curriculum has been killed off by a murderous belt of a crozier.

The bishops will not tolerate state schools teaching the notion that other religions, or even secular ethics, might be equally as valid as the majority religion and its own peculiar morality.

    You have to laugh.

They admit their nonsense cannot withstand the force of even acknowledging that alternative ideas exist.

They have no faith in their own faith :pac:

    Scrap the cap!

this article from the Irish Catholic popped up in my google alerts. Flawed data used to push secular world religions course http://www.irishcatholic.ie/article/flawed-data-used-push-secular-world-religions-course
A survey on proposals for a new primary school course in religion, beliefs and ethics used leading questions and drew from an unrepresentative sample, a prominent research institute has found.
which refers to the NCCA consultation whose results were analysedby the ESRI. http://www.esri.ie/pubs/BKMNEXT324.pdf THE ESRI reoprt said
Finally, attitudinal questions were strongly skewed towards positive
answers, possibly leading to a response bias (for example, in the questionnaire for
parents, ‘My child’s curiosity about different religions and beliefs should be
encouraged throughout their education in primary school’).
Is this negative towards religion? Or perhaps more just leading towards what the NCCA wanted?

    the ESRI reports says
‘My child’s curiosity about different religions and beliefs should be encouraged
throughout their education in primary school’ (59%). Overall, the parents
participating in this survey were more supportive of aims and ideas relating to
social justice and personal development than aspects such as ‘curiosity about
    religions’ and ‘contribution of religions’.
Consultations are always open and self selective. Leading questions might be a bit more of problem but we know the NCCA is always self boostering.

It's not a neutral question, it's actually biased towards the study of religion in school - just not exclusively the RC religion!

Well also have to consider that school time is a limited resource for which different subjects compete. The question might better be multiple choice; 'my child should spend time learning about different religions' or 'my child should learn how to program in java' or 'my child should learn why we need to help those in need in our society' or 'my child should learn to communicate effectively '. Comparative religious study is fine and dandy but we need to rank it in terms of value rather than giving it time by default because Catholics. Got to stop pandering to the lads in skirts at some point.

Bit late for that now when the lads in skirts want to use the same bathrooms in schools as the girls.
