Hopefully B. Had planned to do it last year but it was booked out. Are you doing it this year? What's the course like?

Not doing it this year unfortunately, it's 3.5 laps in and around Ormeau Park. Only incline and I use that term very loosely is as you come in the gate on each lap. The wind was a bitch last year coming in off the River Lagan along Ormeau Rd but there was plenty to tuck in behind and shelter off. Depth of field is probably the strongest i've seen in a race, loads of runners to work off/with and against.

    Friday 14th October: 8mile @ 8:55 avg pace

Late evening run with usual running buddy around Cavan Town. Nice and handy pace and good evening for it.

Saturday 15th October: 40 min Tempo pace run

Bit of a fail on this but I really didn't think this one through. First mistake was to head to forest for this and try to hit target tempo pace of 4:00 per km. Should really have taken terrain and hills into account and gone for effort. Also getting stuck into the tempo without a warm-up to save time wasn't my smartest move.

Anyhow started off and was keeping a close eye on pace and trying to hit target pace while not taking hills into account. Got to 4km and pace was dropping and I was struggling badly so decided to take a 3 min recovery and go again. Splits for 4km were 4:06;3:55;4:07;4:23; 0:24

Was absolutely goosed but decided to do another 4km and would call it a day after that with a focus on effort:

Splits worked out as follows: 3:57;4:14;4:08;4:00

Not the best session ever but not going to stress it!

    Total: 5 mile.

Sunday 16th October: 10.5 mile LSR @ 8:05 avg pace

The young lad had his first cross country early in the morning so postponed the run until evening. Young lad had a ball and is really taking to the running!

Was expected this to be tough as i hate late Sunday evening long runs and was expecting the weather to be fairly nasty. Also the dark meant I had to stick to Cavan town and a few out and back makey-up routes.

Reality turned out completely different; legs were flying and the miles zipped by. Weather turned out to be perfect for this and ended up thoroughly enjoying the run!

    Weekly Total: 42.4 miles

    Monday 17th October: 2.5 mile rec @ 9:10 pace

Very handy recovery run at a very handy pace.

    Tuesday 18th October: 10x400mtrs w 400rec

Had a rare opportunity to get this done at lunchtime so grabbed it with both hands. Done a nice and handy 1.5 mile warm-up and then a few stretches.

Then I got into the 400's. First was the usual too hard, but then got into a nice rhythm and was consistently hit the right paces. Finished off with another 1.5 mile cool down. Legged it back for a shower and back to work.

Splits were as follows: (target 81)
    78;80;80;81;81;80;81;82;81;80

    Total: 8 miles

    Wednesday 19th October: 7 mile @ 8:34 avg pace

A 5:30 am start for this and made sure I had the woolly hat and gloves with me. Was cold but otherwise a perfect morning for running. Enjoyed this and legs were nice and fresh.

Followed by core work in the evening.

    Thursday 20th October: 1 easy, 15 mins @ 6:20, 3min rest, 10 mins @ 6:20, 2min rest, 5 mins @ 6:20, 1 easy

Ran down to the Gaa club track for this straight after work as I had to go back into work. Had originally intended to do 2 mile on either side of the session but time constraints meant I had to half this.

First 15 minutes flew by and mentally I knew once I got the longest one out of the way the other 2 bits would be fine. Hit the target pace comfortably on all of these. Splits were 15min @ 6:18 avg pace, 10mins @ 6:17 avg pace, 5mins @ 6:17 avg pace.

Also managed to sneak in a core work-out.
    Total: 7 miles.

    Friday 21st October: Rest

    Saturday 22nd October: 7 miles with 4 x (2min &5k, 1min @5k, 30sec @ 5k)

Went out just before lunch for this and as I was pressed for time, I just ran down to the local GAA pitch. Weather was perfect for running and enjoyed the quick bits. It was a good workout without getting very tough. Over in a flash too.

Managed to get some core work done in the evening.

    Sunday 23rd October: 12 mile @ 7:59 avg pace

Went out mid morning for this as decided to treat myself to a Sunday morning lie-in - what's seldom is wonderful :D.

The only drawback was that I missed the dry part of the day and it was raining persistently when I headed out. Couldn't settle on a route so just stuck to around town and it was all a bit makey-uppy. Was listening to a Springsteen gig I had just downloaded so quickly zoned out and the miles flew by with the pace picking up the more I zoned out. Legs were full of zip and it was one of those runs where I felt I could have run all day!. Even the rain eased off and the sun came out to make it one of those lovely autumn running days that I love.

    Splits: 8:20;8:09;8:7;8:06;7:57;7:58;7:45;7:57;7:50;7:47;8:10; 7:43

Got a good core workout done too to round off a decent weeks work.

    Weekly Total: 43.5 miles

    Time for an update......

Missed a few weeks with a chest infection that floored me. It coincided with work getting absolutely mental so took that bit extra to get over it.

Got back into it two weeks ago but too busy to update here.

Quick recap while I can somewhat remember!!

    Monday 14th: 5 mile @ 8:42

Creaky as anything but great to get back into it

    Tuesday 15th: 7 mile easy @ 8:36

Early morning run and took it nice and handy

    Wednesday 16th: 6 mile @8:36 avg pace

It's on the watch but that's all I recall.

    Thursday 17th: 8.5 mile incl 2 sets of 8x200 with 800 jog

Vaguely remember finding this tough but was hitting 40/41 fairly consistently.

    Saturday 19th: 5 mile @ 8:59 mile

    Another handy one

    Sunday 20th: 10 mile LSR @ 8:08 avg pace

Early start in the bitter cold but enjoyed this and legs felt good.

    Total week: 41.5

    Monday 21st: 3.2mile @ 8:39

    Nice and handy recovery run

    Tuesday 22nd: 1.5 easy + 4x(200w 200rec, 200 w 200rec, 400 w 400rec) 1.5 easy - 7 miles

Happy with this as was hitting the target paces of 40 and 81 consistently .

    Wednesday - Sunday:
Rest - work was bedlam and then had a big night Friday night. Along with that there was a freezing fog down for most of the time so didn't want to risk the chest so soon after the infection.

    Monday 28th - 5 mile @ 8:16

Work has finally calmed down and got out at lunch time today for this. Legs felt nice and fresh and was happy out with this.

Got the Darkside core routine done this evening and finally feeling like I'm getting back into it.

Focus now is getting some consistency back between now and the spring.

    Tuesday 29th November: 2 easy, 4x200, 4x400, 4x200, 2 easy

Had a bit of time to get this done before work so made the most of it.

    Recoveries were 200,400,200 jogs.

Done a nice and handy 2 mile warm up around the football pitch track and a decent stretch before getting stuck in.

    First 200s were 38;40;38;39
    400s were 78;81;80;79
    200s were 40;39;39;40
Followed it by a 2 mile cool down.

Very happy with this as felt good and had no trouble hitting the target paces.

    Total: 8 miles

    Wednesday 30th November: 7 miles @ 8:07 avg pace:

Set the alarm for 5:30 and was rewarded with the perfect morning for running. Had to stop after 5 miles to take off the gloves and hat (even with the new aerodynamic haricut!!)

Legs were nice and fresh and felt good.
Got the darkside routine done as well in the evening.

Thursday 1st Dec: RestFreezing Fog and frozen footpaths put the kibosh on the plans so just swapped around days.

    Friday 2nd Dec: 6 miles @ 8:07
Seen an opportunity to get out at lunchtime and grabbed it. Another perfect day for running with sunshine and no wind. Legs felt fresh.

    Saturday 3rd Dec: 7 miles incl jingle bells 5k @ 18:20
Had decided to do this late and main reason was that the young lad was looking to do a 5k and we were in the park anyway for the day.

Was fairly relaxed as there was no pressure on this given the interrupted training of late. However, I did want to give it a good blast as it would be a useful indication of where I'm at. Done a few mile warm-up (some with the young lad) which was good fun and lined up beside OFAR at the start.

I knew early on that I was rusty as the effort was up and was hitting 3:45 avg pace. Still I had started fairly far back so was enjoying passing people and working my way through the groups. Was feeling strong and couldn't believe how quickly the kilometres where whizzing by and was still working my way through the field.

I was starting to feel the effort though at the 3.5km mark, which is probably an indication of the amount of training missed, and was mighty relieved when we hit the downhill section. I didn't push overly hard as I knew I wasn't near PB territory and sub 18 was gone too. I also felt a tightening in the right hamstring so just went with the generous downhill to the finish.

Done a cool down run back along the course to find the young lad and escort him home. He was thrilled with a new PB of 29:00 :):)

Overall I was happy with my run, without pushing myself and it gives me a fair idea of where I'm at at the minute.

Hoping to get a good solid block of training under me over the next few months which should leave me in good shape for the spring.

    Splits: 3:42;3:40;3:44;3:38;3:31

    Sunday 4th December: 10 miles @ 8:36

Arranged to meet one of the lads from the club at the forest park at 9am. A bitterly cold morning but nice and dry. I was definitely creaky for the first few miles after yesterday's run. However, I did loosen up after a few miles and even managed to warm up. Even ditched the hat and gloves after 6 miles.

Happy with this run and nice to have the company to make it fly by.

    Done the darkside routine.

Weekly total: 43 miles & 3 core workouts.

    Monday 5th Dec: 5 miles @ 7:54 avg pace

Went out at lunchtime in glorious sunshine. Expected the legs to be tired but was the exact opposite strangely enough - felt like I could have run all day.

Darkside core routine in the evening.

    Tuesday 6th Dec: 8 miles @ 8:30 avg pace

Out at 5:30 am for this and another very mild morning. Zoned out listening to second captains and miles flew by.

    Wednesday 7th Dec: 1 easy; 4x400 w/400 rec, 1 easy, 4x400 w/400 rec, 1 easy

Was really pressed to fit this in today but found a window where I could fit it in if I went with a 1 mile warm-up and cool down instead of the prescribed 2.

Down to the pitch track and a 1 mile warm-up followed by a very quick stretch. First set of 400s felt good and controlled 81;80;80;81. The 1 mile easy went very quick and was straight into the second set of 400s. Last two I was fairly tired and starting to hang on 80;81;82;81.

Home for the world quickest shower and out the door and into my meeting without a second to spare . Think I stopped sweating 30 mins in :D

    Thursday: Rest

Another very long day at work meant moving days around and took this as my rest day. Did manage to get darkside routine done though.

    Friday 9th Dec: 2 easy including 4x200 w 200 rec, 3m @ 6:20, 2 easy w 4x200 w 200rec

Had intended to get this done at lunchtime as I was working late but got called to a lunchtime meeting meaning I had 20mins to get something to eat at lunchtime. Finished work at 7 so decided to do this straight away before I could talk myself out of it.

Knew it would be tough as I was tired, thirsty and hungry. Still first 2 miles felt ok and the quick bits were fine. The first mile was ok too but soon started to tire and I knew the pace was dropping but wasn't beating myself up about it given how I was feeling. Considered stopping a few times but kept going and was mighty relieved when the 3 mile were done. Splits were 6:18;6:36;6:26.

Last 2 mile were fine and fast bits weren't too bad.

Not the best executed session but it got done.

    Saturday: 6.25 miles @ 8:12 avg pace

Snuck out while strictly come dancing was on and was rewarded with a lovely evening for running. This flew by and legs felt nice and fresh.

    Sunday 11th Dec: 10 mile with 9 @ MP

Was dreading this when I seen it on the plan. Wasn't helped by having to do it early this morning after a few beers the night before. Had no choice though to get out early so just went with it.

Legs were picking up the pace on the first mile so rather than pulling back gradually got up to MP after 0.5 mile and kept going. First few miles were grand but had a wee wobble after 3 miles when I considered pulling the plug but toughed it out. Started enjoying myself then but was definitely running out of gas for last 2 miles.

Still delighted with this as it was a real toughie and I stuck it out.
    Splits for MP bits
    6:41
    6:40
    6:52
    6:45
    6:48
    6:39
    6:54
    6:51
    6:53

    Monday 12th Dec: 3.5 miles @ 8:49 avg pace

A very creaky recovery run straight after work. Was a bit overdressed too and legs were mullered.

    Tuesday 13th Dec: 8miles @ 8:37 avg pace

Headed out with one of the lads from the club and it was a perfect evening for running. Really enjoyed this and the run flew by. Legs were feeling a bit livelier.

    Wednesday 14th Dec: 8 miles with 5 x (200,200,400)

Was heading out straight after work with the work crew so snuck this in at lunchtime. Started with a 1.5 mile warm-up run and a quick stretch. Started to feel tough on 4th set and I was getting fairly tired by then and the legs were feeling heavy. Still a good session to get done.

    Recoveries where 200,400,200

    Splits:
    38;39;79
    39,40,80
    40,40,81

    Friday 16th Dec: 8 miles with 4x 1miles @ 6:20 target @ 4x200mtrs

I had intended to do this at lunchtime at the track to make it a wee bit easier on myself but everything conspired against me so ended up heading out at 7 o clock before I got dinner into me and was dreading it by the time I started.

As it was dark I was confined to my undulating route around town and knew this would make it more difficult to hit the paces. Done 2 mile warm -up and sure enough started the first fast mile on a steep uphill section. Knew I shouldn't focus on pace so tried to concentrate on effort. Was glad to hit the 1 min recovery after the first one but it was the quickest 1 min ever. 2nd and 3rd were more on a even surface and again the last started with 0.6 mile up a long drag which zapped the legs!! Done 1 mile very slow before the 4 x 200 over the last mile.

A tough session that I made harder than I should have so glad to get it done even if the paces were a bit off!

Splits for quick miles: 6:28;6:23;6:15; 6:37

Saturday 17th Dec: 7 mile easy @ 8:22 avg pace

Was down in Kerry for this so it was nice to head out in the sunshine in the afternoon after landing and enjoyed the change of scenery. The legs felt heavy so didn't push the pace.

    Sunday 18th Dec: 10.75 miles @ 8:36

Got out in Kerry at first light and was rewarded with a cracking morning. Perfect conditions for running and again enjoyed exploring new routes.

Weekly Total: 45.25 miles but no core work

Time for a bit of a catch up to bring 2016 to a close!

Monday 19th Dec: 3 mile recovery @ 9:07 avg pace

A gentle recovery run from the house down to the pitch, few laps and back home.

    Tuesday 20th Dec: 9 mile @ 9:15 avg pace
Nice few easy miles with a few lads from the club.

Rest of the week went to the dogs between work, social events and Christmas!

    Monday 26th Dec: 5 mile @ 8:26 avg pace

Got out nice and early for this. A lovely mild morning for a run and nice to get it done early.

    Tuesday 27th Dec: 8mile @ 8:14 avg pace

Out at the crack of dawn to get this done as we were travelling to Kerry first thing. Another perfect morning for running

    Wednesday 28th Dec: 2 easy, 3x3 mins @ HMP w/ 2min rec, 4x2 mins @ HMP w/ 2 min rec, 2 easy

Still down in Kerry so done this around Listowel. Didn't put too much thought into my route which meant I seemed to be constantly hitting hills on the fast bits. Still managed to consistently hit the paces. A tough wee workout but enjoyed it.

    Total 8 miles @ 8:07 avg pace

    Thursday 29th Dec: Rest

    Friday 30th Dec: 2 easy, 10x400 @ 81 w/ 400rec, 2 easy

Was expecting this to be a real toughie but it went surprisingly well. I knew after about 3 that I was in the zone and it flew by. Happy to more or less hit the pace everytime without too much difficulty.

    Splits were: 78, 82,80,80,81,79,80,82, 80,79

    Total: 9 mile

    Saturday 31st Dec: 8 mile @ 8:27 avg pace

Headed out mid morning for this and another ridiculously mild morning. It was 12 degrees heading out so just wore a short sleeve top and no gloves or hat and was still feeling overdressed!!!

Enjoyed the run and went home and cut the grass afterwards!

    December Total: 161.5 miles

Happy New Year to all and hope 2017 brings loads of PBs

2016 wasn't a great year running wise and seeing the bald figures shows the lack of consistency and that I didn't really push on from 2015. Missing weeks at crucial times of the season didn't help and had a lot of poor races which knocked the confidence.

Looking at the positive, I did manage a small PB at 10k in October and won the Masters XCountry (also in October).

I'm happy to see the back of 2016 and looking forward to the New Years

Sunday 1st January: 10 miles with 9 at MP.

Nothing like starting the New Year with an easy one! :D

After a generous amount of alcohol last night I was a wee bit wary of this one but knowing I had knocked the same one out a few weeks ago, decided to go for it this morning.

It was the coldest morning in quite a while when I was setting out and broke out the new running gloves I got in the winter sales. Somehow they have shrunk since I tried them on in the shops and they are an extremely tight fit. Still by the time I hit the turnaround point I didn't need them anymore so they did what was needed!

As for the run itself, I was comforted by the fact that the previous attempt at this was fresh in the head and I expected it to feel tough for the first third and it proved so. Again the middle bit just flew by and I was fairly comfortable. When the watch beeped for a 7:03 mile, I increased the pace without any difficulty even though I was keeping the target fairly fluid between 6:50 to 7:00.

Delighted with this and felt strong apart from the first few miles. Done 6 strides at the end in spite of the protests from the legs.

    Splits for MP miles:
    6:50
    6:47
    6:49
    6:42
    6:57
    6:45
    7:03
    6:47
    6:53

    Total: 10.3 miles

Also managed to squeeze in a core session so not a bad start to the year.

    Running targets for January are:
    1. Hit 200 miles for the month
    2. Do a 10mile @ MP run at least once
    3. Get weight down to 11st (+/- 2lbs)
    4. Do at least one race
    5. Do core work 4 days a week
    6. Do at least one long run of 14 miles
