Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi everyone I'm thinking of importing a dog from South Africa to Ireland in a year or so and I know all about rabies, tape worm, microchiping and quarantine but what I don't know is how much it will cost to fly the pup to Ireland.

Can anyone tell me how much it will cost to import a pup.
    Tanks.

It'll depend on the airline. Fairly sure animals are considered cargo. You'll have to route him through London so that could complicate things. Check with the airlines. Some importation companies traffic animals too.

We have sent dogs to Norway and Canada before using a cargo handling company. For your journey I would expect to pay €1500 or there abouts.

Can I ask what type of dog are your looking at importing.

Thanks for that. Norway is in the EU and Canada is a low risk country so everything is fairly straightforward. South Africa is a high risk country, I wonder would that affect the cost.
€1,500 would be great that's less than I taught it would be.

    It's a South African Boerboel.
I know they can be bought in England and then brought over here on the ferry I'm just researching all options right now.

Not quite the same but we are bringing our dog home from Canada in December have been doing all the research as well. Our dog is coming with us in the cabin (as she's small) to Paris and over land from there to Ireland. But we did look at what the options were for cargo and all the advice we got was that if at all possible, try and make sure it's a direct flight. So if you can fly direct to London and then drive/ferry the remainder I think you should. Basically most of the problems encountered with animal travel are when they have very long or very short connections and there is no one travelling with the animal. They can be left waiting in cargo zones of airports for hours and/or sent to the wrong airport. You should also get a bunch of quotes for the cargo travel (assuming your dog will be too big to travel in cabin) as when we did this we got quotes raging from USD1,200 to USD3,500 depending on airlines, level of service, potty breaks, paperwork etc.

Thanks very much for the reply. The more I look into it I think buying in England and driving over on the ferry is the way to go. It doesn't cost much less than importing from South Africa but it's a lot kinder on the pup plus I'd have the pup home younger when bonding and socialising is very important. Tanks for the replies lads they were very helpful.

I think you're right - plane trips are not easy on dogs. I am incredibly stressed about bringing our dog on the flight with us even though she'll be curled up at my feet in her little travel carrier with her fleecy blanket and will probably be far more comfortable than me! Best of luck with the new puppy - it's the best (and possibly worst!) time ever.
