Better to be late than dead on time.

Or you could learn how to drive properly, as in, at or at least close to the speed limit.

When I was changing car recently, my budget was about €10-12k (there or thereabouts). I could have grabbed a semi-decent BMW or Audi in that price range, handy enough, I'd imagine. But I have to be honest and say that neither car were ever part of my search criteria, and I think my reasoning for that is, as this thread kinda hints at, there does seem to be a bit of a stigma (for want of a better word) on BMW/Audi drivers.

Personally speaking, I find most of the BMW drivers I come across seem to be middle-aged men who are more than likely sales reps (usually have the jacket hanging on the back coat hanger, or stuck in traffic flicking through a folio of some sort). I never seem to have issue with them, myself, though. I've never had BMW drivers cut me off or let me in any more than any other drivers. I find they tend to be just the same on the road. I do find the Audi badge would be associated with a certain air of arrogance (and I usually find it's women driving them? I would say easily the majority of Audi Drivers I see are female).

Then on the other end of the spectrum, you have the cheaper Audi/BMWs being snapped up by scumbag tom down the road who have stupid exhausts on them, put stickers on them, lower them and generally make a show of them (very rarely do the cars look any better for it).

All in all I think it's a brand where you just can't win. I ended up buying a Citroen C5. Car I liked a lot, but the brand is fairly anonymous.

In regards to motorway driving, I do find it's BMWs and Audi's that tend to sit on your rear bumper. If I'm in the overtaking lane at less than the limit, I'll usually hit the limit and then pull in as soon as possible to let them by. If I'm at the limit (and either overtaking, or quickly approaching a vehicle that I will be overtaking), I just stay where I am. I only ever had one car (a BMW) flash at me, so hardly a significant percentage of their owners.

That said, I do often wonder how BMW drivers get on with the Gardai. Anytime I creep over the limit I see a squad car somewhere (and spend the next 5 mins glued to the rear-view mirror to see if they're coming after me on blues). Never been done, but always on edge. I often see BMWs ploughing along the motorway at 140km and wonder how often do these people hit speed vans or get pulled by the Gardai? Do BMW use special paint where you become invisible above a certain speed? I never see them pulled in!

Clown in a Mercedes today - indicated to change lanes, so I braked to let him in ahead of me - literally stopped in the middle of the road, while halfway between switching lanes, holding up two lines of slowly-moving traffic, then waited about 30 seconds so that some friend/member of the family could turn up and get in.

BMWs are all descended from Panzers and secretly want to rush off to invade Poland.

As for Audi drivers, here comes a completely unsubstantiated, generalized, stereotype perpetuating comment but did you ever notice how they're often driven by either very small men (height) yet very large (girth) women!

I do drive a very old Toyota, and try to stick to speed limits. Maybe this modern world is just too much for me :(

It may not be you. My GF once drove a MKII Corsa and her mother a Yaris. They got dog's abuse in both cars. Switched to a Corolla and my GF to an MX5 and things improved dramatically. Myself, when I was on the road (white van man), if I saw a Micra, I would boot it in clouds of smoke and would drive through walls, trees and elderly ladies just to get out ahead of the cnut. No matter what. No mercy. Because you just KNOW they would drive at 30-40 km/h, weaving all over the road with their rear foglights and an indicator on and NO MATTER where you were going-they would be in front of you the ENTIRE way. And there would be no way past.
Certain cars would get absolutely no mercy from anyone, because of the type of driver they attract. Daihatsu Charade, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, Getz, Matrix, Nissan Micra and any Korean "Chevrolets", Opel Corsa (not so bad maybe) and just in general anything no one who knows even the tiniest bit about cars would touch.
They are an indicator of the type of person driving that car. They won't know anything about cars, they don't like cars and they don't like driving. And if you haven't got an interest in something and don't like doing it, you won't be very good at it.

Thank god these days I'm no longer on the road in a professional capacity and my commute is mostly motorway, so I can afford a more "live and let live" attitude. And sometimes I will even let one of the "usual suspects" out. And I live to regret it every time. :p:D

    edit:
I drive a Ford, BTW... But as per Beemers, can't say I have had any trouble with them. I always say if you have a problem with everyone, the problem is you. Not you personally OP, I don't know you. Just in general.

The biggest culprits, to me, seem to be 5-Series (current model), A6 and Range Rover drivers. Though, as pointed out earlier, there is arrogance in any type of car, but moreso the bigger ones. I do feel that there is an increasing amount of arrogance on the roads in general, particularly on the M50.

Speaking of such twats and A6's. . .

What I noticed last year was when the weather got colder the most breakdowns I saw were BMW cars. Usually 2001-2004 reg cars.

So dont worry OP the cold winter is here.

If you're talking about during some snow or ice, they're not breakdowns... they're abandoned because they're RWD and the owners probably shat themselves.

Statistical data seems to point to the fact that "luxury" brands are some of the least reliable cars on the road and are also the most expensive to repair.

Cheapo Asian cars are far more reliable and much cheaper to fix if something does go wrong somehow.

So basically, anybody paying a premium for a car is a complete idiot. You end up getting something that is demonstrably worse for its intended purpose than the cheaper alternative that does exactly the same thing except better.

At the end of the day it's a metal box on wheels that gets you places. You should aim to make this experience as cost effective as possible.

In other words - LOL @ you if you buy an expensive car. It's just a mode of transport, not a statement about yourself or a lifestyle choice.

Eh...because the vast majority of them in this country are overpriced felt spec econoboxes that are in no way, shape or form exciting or as prestigious as some of the gits in them think.

It'd do the exact same job as the priciest Merc or BMW and it wouldn't break down in the process.

Get in car, drive car to place, get out of car, forget about car until you get back in it, repeat.

This can be done with the 1989 Toyota Starlet you bought from your granny or a 152 Deluxo Mercedes Dickhead Mobile in literally exactly the same manner but the guy with the Starlet is the one with both a functioning brain and car.

People who are proud of their car because they paid a fortune for it are pathetic.

It's ok buddy. I'm a nice guy really.

I'll give you a lift home in my cheap and cheerful Kia Rio when i see your fine piece of German engineering broken down on the side of the motorway again.

"People who are proud of their car because they paid a fortune for it are pathetic."

Also, I've never met someone who's been proud of how much they paid for their expensive car. I have however met a lot of people who are proud of their cars because they've worked hard to get a to a point in life where they can afford a luxury they've strived to achieve ownership of.

Let me assure you, when I'm sitting in the heated driver's seat of my BMW 5-Series, listening to music though the Bang and Olufsen surround sound system, rounding a corner with the Adaptive Drive system enabled, and checking out the speed I'm travelling at on the heads up display, I rarely think,

Your assuming he doesn't have the means to do so, which is of course shortsighted. I've driven my mothers 520 quite a bit and while it is indeed a very nice place to sit and has a decent engine, I wouldn't throw down the money she did to own one. Not because it's a bad car but is something I personally do not want myself.

They probably are from a "being an actual useful vehicle" point of view. I can pretty much guarantee sports cars aren't as reliable and are completely impractical in various other ways.

I suppose they go fast and look nice, but since i'm not a fourteen year old or a middle aged manchild looking for a new toy to play with these things are irrelevant because the purpose of a car is once again:

Get in car, drive car to place, get out of car, forget about car until you get back in it, repeat.

I worked in a firm where most people on my pay grade were driving BMW, Audi Mercs etc. They were driving them but they didn't own them. In fact, they were up to their eyes in debt for them. They looked down their noses at my 4 year old car that I serviced and repaired myself. I would have thought many should have invested some of their hard earned cash in some driver courses. A bit pointless just getting your licence and believing an expensive car will transform you into a driver.

To each their own and if everyone drove older cars there wouldn't be such a big choice for people like me :D
