My son gifted an old Rega Planar 3 turntable. I now need to get a suitable amp and speakers. He likes to listen to Classic Rock, Jazz and Classical Music. I am putting the system in an attic room so it does not need huge volume but good sound quality. I am no expert so I would be grateful for any advice. I have a limited budget and do not want to spend a fortune. Thanks

    Hi Gilted.

    Very nice turntable.

If it was me for something like that I would not go any lower than the likes of the Marantz PM6005 with the Q Acoustics 2020i bundle priced at £339.00 (£6.99 Delivery)
    http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/hi-fi-system-deals/pah011435

Or even the PM6005 along with the Dali Zensor 1's priced up at £399.00
    http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/hi-fi-system-deals/pah011435

Or add the Monitor Audio Bronze 2 speakers for £499.99 (Agian £6.99 Delivery)

If you wanted to push the Budget you could look at the Cambridge CXA60 at £499.95
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-201266-cxa60.aspx

Matched with the Concept 20's at £349.95
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-12605-concept-20-black.aspx

Or even the Monitor Audio Silver 1 priced at £499.95

    Hope this is of help.

Any questions drop me a post.

Thanks for the reply Kenny. The options you posted are interesting and I realise now what the cost of setting up a good turntable with a tuner and speakers is - out of my budget range at the moment. Will have to think again or wait and save. Thanks again.

As someone from the Rega Planar era - I would think slightly differently - Kenny is correct in that the planar is capable of sounding great, but most of us original Planar Era nerds used something like a NAD 3020 20 watt amp with it and it sounded great - ( the rich kids used an AR Cambridge or a NYtech!)

In that vein I really think that you can get a Planar ( if its properly set-up) to sound great with a little Cambridge AM1 at £79:
    https://www.richersounds.ie/p-10602-topaz-am1.aspx

This is a great sounding little amp which is really stripped down just like Planar era amps - you will need to add a Phono step up amp - these have improved radically with the vinyl revolution - our current budget fave is the Project MM Phonobox at just £49.95:
    https://www.richersounds.ie/p-201010-project-phonobox-mm-blk.aspx

Again on a budget for the speakers - have a look at the Q Acoustics 2010's which are amazing value for a really high quality pair of speakers at just £79.95:

If you put this together with a well set up ( and well isolated) Planar you will have a stunning little system for around £200 that will sound pretty amazing!
