Basically my old hard drive broke, I brought it to the shop and they fixed it. All is good until I try installing my steam games - they wouldn't install I then tried to install java, minecraft but to no avail.

Anyone have any idea what the problem would be? Java said "cannot proceed with the current internet settings" and steam said "connection timed out".

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Screenshots say a thousand words.what errors do you get when trying to install Java? What browser are you using? Have you tried resetting IE/chrome?

    Java: https://gyazo.com/8a00db8fd7bdd6176985a91fad2e4982

    Steam: https://gyazo.com/30b3f5d8618f2a6f18a444ce5ce6157a

I'm using Chrome; I tried uninstalling chrome and steam, nothing is working.

I just got my PC back today and the man installed Chrome and Ad-block for me. I'm thinking it could be a problem with my internet settings (connected via ethernet cable) but then again I was able to install gyazo so i'm unsure at this stage.

Is Adblock still running? Id so, disable it and try again.
Try a different browser (if you haven't already)

Because the problem is occurring on steam also it leads me to believe the problems lies within my internet setting on my PC. I've tried many things but nothings working, I might just bring it back to the shop at this stage

If you can browse the web ,from firefox or internet explorer,
its to do with steam internet settings,
steam could be blocked by the firewall settings or maybe the antivrus ,
i had to click my antivirus on certain settings,
set, ok , give program x acess to the web from this pc/ laptop .
it would block certain programs apart fromthe browsers like chrome , firefox.
eg give utorrent acess to the internet .

Certain ports on the router or your windows os ,firewall need to be open to allow steam to acess the web or play game s or download updates ,demo,s from steam

maybe switch off the router from start menu, control panel,
see if steam works ,can you play a game or download a demo .

do not go near the firmware on any router ,
not a good idea unless you are a professional tech expert.

If its a replacement hard drive, are you sure you have the rights to save to disc?

Did they create a new profile?

    re JAVA problem

go to chrome browser network settings it may be set to acess the internet connect through a proxy server address

If you are intentionally using a proxy, to acess the web . make sure it is correctly addressed

    or

If you are not intentionally using a proxy, then be sure that your chrome browser internet connection is set to "Automatically detect settings".
