    Hi everyone,
I just have one very quick question to ask.....

Is it possible to get public liability insurance without having a VAT registered company/business set up?

I have been asked to participate in a Christmas market selling cupcakes at a stall for one day which of course I said yes to.
The company organising the market have said I will need to have public liability insurance in order to trade there.

I'm concerned that I can't get the insurance without a registered business...
Can anyone shed any light on this for me please? :)

    Thanks for your time,
    Fizzle.

Ring them and let them know your situation most will have a market traders product that should suit. Lots of people out there doing it the odd time I am sure they are well use to it.

There's a crowd called MAST who specialise in market traders and small food production companies. They were 42% cheaper with full cover than anyone else

Nobody is going to give you insurance for one day. MAST (mentioned above) is a traders' group that has organized a group scheme for members through a broker with Liberty Insurance. You will not make the price of annual membership from selling a day's worth of buns.

MAST were brilliant when I dealt with them while setting up a weekend stall. They were the cheapest by far compared to other providers and were able to provide insurance that day. It cost us €150 for a years cover but this was 2 years ago.

How many buns need to be sold to cover that on a single day? Would save a lot of money by giving them away for free at the door!

That was for a full year. I'm sure its possible to get cover for a shorter period.
The cupcakes might be very big or made of foie gras & caviar :pac:

    Assinine comment.

The reason there is a group scheme is to reduce costs for the insurer. Below a certain level of premium it is not economic to issue an insurance policy for both the insurer and the broker who has to get his commission - that is why, where commission levels are reduced (e.g. motor insurance) there is an administration fee on policies.
    BS topic.

Why is it a BS topic? Insurance is a major factor/overhead for small food producers

Of course insurance is a major factor for all SME's. In this case we are discussing a cupcake vendor who wants insurance FOR ONE DAY. Read the opening post.

I know exactly what he's proposing but you dismissed this as a bs topic without even knowing what margins or overheads OP was considering, as pointed out in a previous post.

The OP got their answer... it is available through MAST. OP can do the maths or ask them if they have a shorter term policy. @power101 is "sure" they can get shorter term cover, but fails to say how/where ....adds nothing of use.

Op, might be worth asking your home insurer if you are covered or could get a short term extension for the day.

Where did I say in my original post that I only wanted the insurance for ONE DAY?
I simply stated that is how long the market was on for.
I don't mind being covered for the year, I make cakes and cupcakes all the time so being covered by insurance may give me the opportunity to get out there and sell at other market stalls.

If you go back and read my original post this was my question:
"Is it possible to get public liability insurance without having a VAT registered company/business set up?"

Perdroeibar1/Pedronomix: I’m find your replies to be rude and unhelpful, I am asking one question in an area I am not yet familiar with.
If you think this is a BS topic then please leave the thread and take your rolling eyes elsewhere.

Thank you power, appreciate the reply :)

Pity you neglected to mention ongoing sales other than just a one day event. In this case you should have product liability insurance too or face personal liability for any claims arising from your products.

Thanks, I will look into the product liability insurance also....

    Thanks for all your replies,
Mods feel free to close this thread now, I think I have what I need.
