There is quite an unnatural reaction to the whole rebellion. no sense of panic or urgency. Its a real bugbear with this series.

Isn't that how the Dubs reacted though? People still went to the pub

Has anyone else figured out why George and Ingrid are in it? Cos I certainly can't....

I think the character of Frances was written more to appease the modern day feminists than it was to accurately portray the events of the rebellion.

I think Jimmy is beginning to realise that being pals with Frances is bad news :D

Was the spire in it??? I didn't notice

Nelsons pillar appeared in quite a few shots so far in the first two episodes at least

I'm still putting the house on Arthur being shot with the pistol that he himself stole from the Turkish soldier, which is now in the hands of the rebels.

This story could have been told in two episodes imo

I'm not too impressed by the Gleeson lad's acting. Think his brother is far superior.

Watch him play Hughie in Love/hate. He was terrific in the first season. Real psychopath

Finding this a bit crap, can anyone recommend a decent book on the events. Of 1916. I need to brush up on my Irish history.

I find Sarah Greene's Cork accent annoying (and I'm from Cork myself).Weird.

She's like a hot version of Maeve Higgins.

Very Comical Ali by Pearse. "We are winning".

I suppose though in the bigger picture the Rising was the catalyst for the WoI.

The only way this could get better is if they throw a spanner in the works and the rebels win and the brits are booted out. Can imagine all the outraged callers to liveline the next day

Hated that last scene showing dead child over Pearses speech, almost saying "well are we happy with rising now?"

This is too downtown abbey for my liking

I can understand it was underestimated but with the streets being a battle zone it just seems to hard to comprehend how people went about their daily lives. The plough and the stars play/movie did capture the whole 'going to the pub' thing though.

Personally, I really enjoyed that episode (after hating last weeks). Thought the scenes with Arthur's family were very good.

I have just noticed the "no spoilers please" on the the tread title. Quite amusing.

The annoying drunk guy was taken out of the pub by some hard man and then at the end was back in the pub. What was the point of that ?

Execution Amon Goeth style that was.

The officer's name was Bowen-Colhurst. General Maxwell who presided over the executions of the rebel leaders tried to cover up his killing spree and dismissed an officer who raised objections. He was eventually court martialled and found guilty but insane.

He'd paid off the money lender (I assume one of many chasing him) with Elizabeth's engagement ring.

No real background to how Elizabeth became a socialist either. The first episode should have covered the lockout and there should have been 6 in total.

I found it confusing as well. I thought initially that he was such a waster that he had pawned the ring and gone on the beer with the money. And I presumed then that the moneylender was then taking him off cos he hadn't paid the money he owed. So I was more than surprised to see him back at the bar supping pints, and still looking very dapper.

I mean, they beat us over the head to reinforce that Miss Lacey is pregnant, but leave us on our own to work out what the hell was going on with that plotline.

Agreed. Last week's was a bit slow. Thought this week's episode was really good.

The scene with Elizabeth's parents gave a little bit of insight into how Elizabeth may have become a Socialist. The mother seems to have some leanings towards helping the poor and isn't willing to just run away to Belfast.

The stuff with Arthur was very well done. His wife telling him why he had to go back was interesting. I'm sure many an Irish family found themselves in a similar position.

All in all I thought it was a really solid episode and I'm looking forward to next week's now.

Explain to me how it's like Downton. In any way at all. Other than it's set at roughly the same time as the second series of Downton.

I do wonder what period drama people used as a lazy comparison before Downton aired. Pride and Prejudice maybe. Or Upstairs Downstairs.

Given that the main characters are all fictional it's entirely possible for there to be spoilers. Someone posted what was going to happen to some of them without spoiler tags last week. That's why it's in the thread title.

He had a split lip when he was drinking at the end. He obviously got a bit of a hiding and I assume gave them the ring or whatever he pawned it for.
