So I just saw that the Garda are now recruiting but their upper age limit is 35.
The PSNI is upper limit is 57.

Any ideas why PSNI have such a high limit? I believe other UK forces are in the 30's as well.

My immediate thought is that we have a smaller pool to choose from. We have a population of approximately 2 million vs ROI's 4 million.

Im just speculating, but it may have been one of the arrangements put in place around the formation of the PNSI, perhaps as it would have offered upper age people a chance at a job in the police as they may have felt they couldnt join the RUC for whatever reason. A plus for the police is that they get extra "real life experience" , and of course the saving they will make when it comes to retirement age. Police forces in the UK dont keep staff forever and its possible that the PSNI wont either these days, especially when you consider the recent news article which stated that 96% of officers feel morale is low.

I'm older than the average recruit by a good way, but 57 would surely be a test of anybody to hold it together through the process and training. Hats off to anybody that can do it.

I wonder if it's to facilitate transfers from other police/military forces?

I thought they no longer allowed transfers from other forces.

It could be just to improve workforce diversity.

I think transfers are only accepted for specialised positions such as detectives and inspectors and higher ranks. It used to be but may have changed.
