Japan: Nintendo Account is now live; official blog launched

In Japan, Nintendo’s new all-encompassing account feature, Nintendo Account, is now live. You can sign up for it here.

As promised, you can register using your existing Nintendo Network ID or your various social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter. European, Australian or North American NNIDs won’t work though – looks like we have to wait until the service officially launches in the West. Note, however, that this is not My Nintendo, the successor to Club Nintendo. That is scheduled to launch next year.

Until February 1st, there’s also a promotion where you get back 100 yen for every 1000 yen you spend on the Nintendo eShop.

Finally, Nintendo also updated its official Japanese website. Other than its new visual design, you can now also buy games there and have them downloaded directly to your Wii U or 3DS. They also launched a new blog called Topics where announcements will be made.

If its not the successor to Club Nintendo, then what is it?!?!

I can't wait to be able to buy stuff online and get it installed on my Wii U. If it was available now, I would have bought Toki Tori 1 & 2 yesterday or today in work, instead of forgetting last night when I was at home!

NINTENDO ACCOUNT LAUNCH EXCLUSIVE TO JAPAN FOR NOW, MARCH 2016 FOR AUSTRALIA ALONGSIDE MY NINTENDO

Yesterday Nintendo launched its much anticipated new Nintendo Account system in Japan. It wasn’t a full feature rollout but some elements like linking your NNID and using your social media accounts to login are now available. You also can also now purchase games from the Japanese website and have them download to your Wii U or 3DS – pretty cool. Here’s some of their statement.
This preliminary launch represents a limited selection of the full functionality that Nintendo will eventually offer.

This preliminary Nintendo Account launch is focused on bringing off-device purchase functionality to the Japanese market.

    So we asked Nintendo Australia when we can expect to see such functionality roll out here . They confirmed to us that this launch is just for Japan for now and;
“Nintendo Account and the new My Nintendo membership service will launch in Australia and New Zealand in March 2016”.

We suspect this will apply for other regions outside of Japan, but we’ll wait for word from Nintendo of America and Europe.

It’s cool to see Nintendo Account launch in Japan, I don’t think anyone expected it this early – time to revise those expectations and let Japan ‘beta test’ it!

Yeah they do themselves out of a lot of business in this regard, I went to buy Bayonetta 2 the other night while it was on sale but didn't have enough space so I just left it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's done this. If there was a way I could of bought it without installing it from the eshop I would of done it.

I don't get why you would have bought it on the eShop for €30(plus an extra €10 for the original Bayonetta) when the double pack Special Edition has been available for £25(€35) in several places lately.

Heard word that this will be arriving in March alongside the Australian release. Quote form Ninty Europe on the Aussie release:
We can confirm that it’s the same in Europe but I’m afraid I don’t have details on the US.

Looks like Nintendo are doing birthday-month discounts for the month of your birthday. It'll be interesting to see what offers the Japanese get later this month...

    Happy Birthday Cidey!

It's such a shame that Nintendo use those really strict background checks and document references to ensure your date of birth is entered correctly. Damn them and their efficacious back-office staff!

Kimishima provides more details on My Nintendo

During Nintendo’s financial results briefing today, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima delivered an update about My Nintendo.

The My Nintendo point program will begin in March in 39 countries. There will be Platinum Points like the prior Club Nintendo and Gold Points for coupons. My Nintendo is starting with a points program, coupon, emails, and web downloads. It’ll expand to friends list, cloud data, and in-store.

Kimishima also reiterated that the first goal is to quickly have 100 million people registered with My Nintendo.

    https://twitter.com/ZhugeEX

I suggest reading the Twitter accounts as they've much more details. This sounds really promising. If Nintendo can deliver on this, it has the potential to do really well. A couple of notable Tweets:

My Nintendo will be available from March in the following countries: the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Malta, Greece, Sweden, Estonia, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil.

Can't wait to actually have a proper online system, like the others have had for about 10 years! :p

    Nintendo UK&IE say February.
    http://www.nintendo.co.uk/News/2016/February/Nintendo-outlines-launch-plans-for-first-mobile-app-Miitomo-1082687.html
Starting 17th February 2016, people in the UK and Ireland will be able to preregister for Miitomo by creating a Nintendo Account using their Nintendo Network ID, social network accounts or email address. People who preregister for Miitomo will be among the first to be notified about the availability of Miitomo when it launches in March.

Nintendo’s new My Nintendo** rewards program will launch alongside Miitomo in March 2016, and will be able to connect with Miitomo. A special Miitomo bonus will be offered to anyone in the UK and Ireland that creates a Nintendo Account between 17th February and the launch of Miitomo in March.

Oh yeah, they're two different things, for no valid reason...

Just got the mail and registered myself! I'll give the app a try alright, but it does look like a Mii-ified chat app*

*With in-app purchases for clothes for the Mii... ¬_¬

Just registered for Nintendo Account and Miitomo.
Now lets see what goodies I can earn.
I notice points earned now have a six month lifespan, which is a bit harsh tbh, given how many games most people buy each year.
I wonder how they'll be dished out?

It does appear very much more of a social app than a game, which is an interesting choice for their first mobile offering.

The "Platinum" points make me think they're going to have tiered points. Bronze, Silver, Gold etc.
    Complicated mess, just like Nintendo.

They've already said there will be two tiers, platinum and gold. Platinum for 'fun' content and Gold for discounts on games and software. Hardly complicated, a good way of doing it imo.

So, does that mean all the pointless games over the past year will go.... unrewarded!!!!
    Nooooo!

I thought it was longer than a year but no it's not by much. I think Smash Bros. was one of the last games to ship with points cards. Yoshi's Woolly World, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Splatoon, Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush, Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water, Super Mario Maker and more all will fall through the cracks.

What do people think will be the first game to have platinum and gold rewards? Twilight Princess? Will the programme be ready in time? Maybe the code could be postdated.

So, at least our launch NX's and all the games we buy will count.... not so bad.
At risk of being called a Trolling Troll Monster, will Amiibo and Amiibo cards come with points I wonder?

On the latest Nintendo email, they have this entry for Miitomo.
Maybe this is old news, "Free to start" is a bit ominous and implies a definite paywall (rather than simple IAPs for costumes and gear).
How well do you really know your friends?

Miitomo is a free-to-start*** smart device app from Nintendo. Make a Mii that looks just like you, and communicate with your friends. Preregister to receive the latest information on Miitomo!****

    ***Offers in-app purchases.

****Miitomo will launch in the following countries in March: the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, U.S., Canada. Preregistration is only available in these countries. Miitomo at launch will support the following languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Japanese.

It's been pretty well publicised (at least I thought so) that they plan to sell costumes for the Miis etc...

Yeah, but you don't see candy crush or any other freemium game being advertised as "Free to start".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

Yeah, that phrase implies a cap or progression limit. Could even be a trial period followed by periodic sub payment, like Pokemon bank. Given that Tamodatchi life didn't exactly set the world on fire, how addictive and compelling do the think a mii based chat app is going to be? Most people are waiting for it with bemused curiosity, not baited breath...

I hope miitomo falls flat on its arse, along with any other mobile/tablet release. I want my Nintendo games on a console, hand held or TV based. Please and thanks.

I remember reading an interview with, I think, Iwata where he said he they didn't like terms like free to play for games that use the term. He felt it wasn't descriptive of the product and felt "Free to start" was a more suitable term. Isn't Badge Arcade Free to Start as well?

They are going to be mobile based so wont have much comparison to console games etc. Very different animal altogether.

It's strange seeing the Nintendo logo load up on a smartphone. Am I the only one who thinks this looks really boring? I'd have no interest in this other than the platinum and gold points that can be earned from it.

You need to set your region to Japan to download it , but you'll lose all data when you install the eu version later. A fried of mine downloaded it and says it feels just like tomodachi life.

If you enable installing from unknown sources in android you can install an apk for it.
[That website works by downloading a version from the play store every few weeks or when requested, so it should be safe.]
It's apparently all translated and everything, they're just not out yet here on the local play stores.

Obv. you can't log in with our region ID's yet though you can check it out without an ID.

We are getting it on the 31st as well. We're getting a new and supposedly improved eShop. It'll also be accessible from PC and smart devices. Thing is though that points it seems will only be available on digital games.

If we are getting a new super-improved eshop on 31 March, you'd have hoped for a bit more by way of eshop offers to launch it.

No new SNES launches (which would have been great to shove out as a cross-buy. Buy Earthbound for 3DS and get Wii U version for free)

No major releases for WiiU, apart from a very over priced Wii re-release.
