Tell that to the emergency services that have to leave their family at home to go and rescue a twat.

Link to a news report of emergency services having to rescue a regular salthill summer during a winter storm please.
You never hear actual emergency personnel complaining either, its always some "concerned citizen" on the internet

Winds seem to be on a gradual decrease here over the last 30 mins or so, gone from a 'rough' to a 'blustery' evening.

Where are you located? I'm on mobile so can't tell.

Winds here outside Newport, Mayo have eased a little for now. I don't have much faith in it staying this calm for long though.

I am about to walk my dogs along the shore West of Galway. I would take the hand held anemometer with me but I doubt if it's waterproof :)

So I thought that the wind had died down until the first gust hit me & literally almost knocked me over.

Sham town in NE Galway corsav6. Still getting some strong gusts but they seem to be decreasing in frequency for the time being. Rain has got a bit heavier though in the last while.

    Its wet and windy here

WINDSAT winds measured at 18:27, showing some 50-kt barbs to the southwest. The area of black barbs is where the rainfall is causing contamination and hence unreliable readings. It's a big area of rain!

Pretty much a non event here so far, some drizzle and a bit windy but nothing any worse than the last few days, hope it stays that way.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

It is only forecast to be a yellow wind warning for Dublin anyway.

Horrible night in roscommon very heavy and persistent rain since 4pm, some strong gusts also.

Just going by my immediate location, it seems that HIRLAM's projected totals have been closer the mark than the EURO4 projection, which has overestimated accumulated totals so far.

20 mins drive down the N18 and the wind is certainly blowing as strong as it has done all day.
    The rain has eased though.

Massive swell overnight in the south and west. Persistent strong wings nationwide (80-100km gust) some exposed locations hitting 120.

Rain otals in northwest are most concerning factor.

But I'm dubious on the red warning. There must be regional differences in rainfall impact. The warning system needs an overhaul.

A gust to 70knots in Belmullet is totally different to a gust to 70kt at EIDW

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,223 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

New high gust here in Ardfert few minutes ago of 70.8 kph

Rain getting heavier now too ( 10mm ), stinker of a night out there.

This one is a bit confusing WC?

weathercheck means that a 70 knot in Belmullet would do little damage as Mayo and north west mayo are well used to it. however the same kinda gust in Dublin would do damage and close the airport.

Midnight reports from met eireann- Mace head 54 knots.....Kinsale also gusting 54 knots. a blustery , but not "stormy" night. a rain event for sure
