Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Xbox One Tv Tuner with... "strange" UPC box?

    Hi there,

First of all, I am a foreigner (so not very familiar with how TV works in Ireland) and for most of my life I have just watched things on my laptop or phone (so not very familiar with how cable/freeair tv works here). My apologies in advance for the ignorance.

So let's go step by step:

    - In the apartment I rent there's a "white UPC" box with 2 outputs, one with nothing and the other with a cable. That cable then splits into 2 (with a splitter), one goes to my wifi router and the other one to the tv (that came with the house). I don't pay to UPC for TV (only broadband and landline - because it was included in the bundle I guess) yet, somehow, I get tv channels. They are nothing fancy (MTV, RTE, etc.) so I so far thought these are freeair channels, like if the "white UPC thing" provides both internet "and" antenna tv.

    - So I have an Xbox One and I bought a TV tuner hoping to just plug the cable that goes to the tv into it. So, I did, it fits, yet it only finds 7 channels, in HD all fancy (Sky Premiere, BT Sports, etc.), which, of course, I cannot watch (not that I was expecting that either)

So I guess my questions are:

    - What is that "white UPC" thing? Is that an antenna of some sorts? And if not, why is it giving me tv channels? what sorcery is that?!

    - Does that box work with the TV tuner in the Xbox? (or I will need to buy an aerial)

Again, apologies for the long post but I had no idea how to explain it.

    Thanks,
    Javier

UPC (now Virgin Media) is a cable TV provider. They have a network of cables going into people's homes, which carry different signals: analog TV, digital TV, data. The white box is simply an outlet for those cables.

The TV channels you got for free are probably analog TV channels. UPC cannot prevent these from going to people who do not pay for TV.

Your tuner is a digital tuner, and should work with a standard bunny ears antenna. Here's an example. With that you should be able to watch the RTE digital terrestrial channels, also known as Saorview.
