Having huge issues with companies in Ireland - Virgin Media, Eir - refusing to accept my N26 IBAN. Saying they can't accept overseas IBANs which is nonsense but this is the line they're pushing and it's making an easy job much more difficult.

You need to tell them that they are committing IBAN discrimination & what they are doing is illigal and contravenes EU Regulation 260/2012. Also tell them that you will be reporting the matter to the Central Bank if they refuse to accept N26. See the following link:

Done all of that and already reported Virgin to the CCPC the other day (they've already responded). Just can't believe both VM and Eir are openly telling customers they can't have a non-domestic IBAN for direct debits.

They've heard it all before but like everything else in this country there's no enforcement

Out of date systems is there excuse, sure payments still shows as 'UPC Ireland' on your bank statement.

If VM won't accept it just pay monthly with your n26 debit card online when they email you...a pain i know but a workaround.

Nah, I'll just switch to Vodafone istead who also tried to fob me off at first but then set it up soon after I mentioned IBAN discrimination etc. It's making a really straightforward process unnecessarily complex.

Where Virgin Media are refusing to accept your bank details in order to set up a direct debit, we would suggest submitting a formal written complaint to Virgin Media outlining the above information to them and requesting on what legal basis they are not accepting your account details, which we understand you have done. You may also wish to add that you have brought the matter to the attention of the CCPC.

If your issue is not resolved following engagement with Virgin Media, please revert to us providing all relevant information and correspondence. At that point we will provide the information to our Consumer Protection Division (CPD).

Our CPD examine consumer issues in the context of overall consumer detriment, or loss and carry out whatever action (if any) is deemed necessary and appropriate. The CCPC is grateful to consumers who take the time to make complaints and highlight areas where there might be consumer loss however, we are not in a position to investigate all complaints.

Rubbish how? I've just spent this pm on an online chat with a customer service rep from eir who told me they won't accept an IBAN from a non-Irish company. Why would I lie about that?

I'm saying you are being told rubbish by the idiot in Eir. I had my eir bill being paid by DD from a Bunq bank account with a Dutch IBAN.

They are shocking. They'll also charge you a late payment fee to add insult to injury. I'm just moving elsewhere as they've been nothing but hassle to deal with.

They can try, listen back to the call with their agent that confirmed the N26 De IBAN was put in

If it wasn't Eir etc giving me 15 Verus 500 on virgin I'd be off

They must only have bothered updating the DD system name when it was upgraded to accept IBANs. Should've informed their staff about it though....

Rang virgin and got through to the usual outside of ireland and the same roundabout attitude, so gave up. (4 bills of this messing between revolut and N26)

Rang back for the usual oh I'm thinking of cancelling with price increase and iban messing, got through to Irish place

Couldn't do enough, even said its a European IBAN and should be taken. Said she will put it in again(thinks someone didn't do it right) and keep an eye on it and gave me Irish number to ring if doesn't come out

Just got an email telling me that i can get 10% extra if I top up my N26 up to a max of €50

It seems the max topup via card is 150

Maybe a 500 euro from revolut to n26 would work? (Sepa instant)

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 40,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Virgin Media will not process N26 as a payment method as it’s Germany based.
I’ve a case in with the CCPC and just waiting on reply.

It’s against European law not to accept it.

The top up function never works for me using the debit card or Google pay, its my biggest gripe about N26 and a few friends have the same issues using different debit cards.

I completed the paper Direct Debit Mandate earlier in the year and posted it in with no issue. If I log in to My Virgin Media Account and view my IBAN it still says IE at the start but has been coming out of my N26 account fine every month since.

I did contact them at the time via WhatsApp support to double check they had received and updated the IBAN to my DE N26 properly and they said it was fine.

I got confirmation letter with DE IBAN, but they never took the money, see next month when May is due to come out

I think they did warn me, after filling out and sending in the paper mandate, that the next payment would come out of the original bank account, and would subsequently then change to the N26 account.

I also posted them in the mandate and received a text message days later saying my attempt to change my payment method had failed. Simple fact here is that VM don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to standard stuff like this or they actually do and they create confusion to stop people doing it. Either way, I'm an ex customer and won't be returning.

Its 15 vs 500 for me, so no choice but stick with them

Did anyone ever experience issues on the likes of Steam or Epic?

I wasn't able to pay with my N26 card due to "region issues".

Conversations with their support was pointless and a waste of time and N26 didn't see where they can help me as they didn't even see it hitting my card/account, so they didn't reject it.

    Contact steam support again
They will verify some details and youll be able to use it then.

My revolut was being declined and they resolved.

Is n26 you a good account ( forgetting about its charges for a minute)? Is it as good as the likes of Revolut for withdrawing cash from ATMs in non-euro currency as I travel to UK alot. Im not sure if EU citizens have free access to the NHS as visitors to the UK post brexit so its travel insurance would benefit me.Can n26 you be changed back to the free n26 account or must you close the account and open an ordinary n26 free a/c. Thanks for the info?

I don't think you can downgrade account. As for fees for withdrawing, non-euro etc, it will depend upon what account you are signing up to. Also depends on what level of usage is etc. Its all laid our clearly on their website so you would be best having the N26 and Revolut pages open side by side and comparing for yourself.

You have to sign up for a 12 month contract but can downgrade back to a free after that.

Whats the travel insurance like? I know the 'free' one with a BOI Platinum credit card is very poor and pretty much useless.

Medical Emergency limits look a bit low for the USA/Canada - compared to the usually recommended amounts. Not sure how significant this is - or if the usual amounts are just a bit unnecessary.

For the EU that would be fine but €1m isn't a lot in the US healthcare system. This was my concern on these free travel policies that banks offer.

Just shows you how crazy the US system is, but I cannot see how you would go over 1 milllion.

A lot cheaper to get an international air ambulance back to Ireland :)

I couldn't envisage a compound fracture costing anything near 1mil in u.s. hospital. What does it cost an orthopaedic surgeon and few days in hospital.

A better example would be a medical emergency requiring prolonged intensive care. Plus repatriation back to Ireland via Air ambulance. That could easily tip over the mil mark. I suppose a sudden heart attack requiring stents would cost a tens of thousands?

What does the average travel insurance cover provide?

The ones I've looked at recently are in the range €4-€20 million.
VHI Multitrip used to be €1 or €2 million - now €10 million.

Seems high - but allows for worst-case illness scenario in USA.

So my account was just cleaned out of a few grand, I submitted the dispute from within the app, and re ordered the card.

How long does this normally take to get sorted and have my money back?

OK, we need a bit more information about what exactly happened before we can guess what N26 will do. Who "cleaned" it out?

    This too shall pass.

I'm not exactly sure who it was but the chat representative said

"There’s no way to know exactly how your data was obtained. But what could've happened is:

    - the card was read (skimmed) when cash was withdrawn at an ATM
    - data was read when a payment was made, or
    - the database of an online shop was hacked

I can see that the merchant is located in the US, city:WEST SALISBUR"

    So someone in West Salisbur.

4 or 5 different transactions from really strange merchant names like "AHHDKKEJ SJKXNJK"
    And one from AliExpress.

That's an ATM skim or your payment information was stolen from a phishing site / online malware like magecart. I was skimmed before in an large Ulster Bank and got multiple attempts for approx €350 over and over, fortunately TSB called me about this and prevented it.

When was the last time you used an ATM to withdraw?
When was the last time you used a non popular website to pay for an item?
Do you have Payments Abroad enabled in your N36 card settings?
