Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is there really any advantage to N26 though? They seem to be far less feature rich than Revolut and their customer service is terrible. I found AIB easier to deal with and there's nothing particularly mind blowingly different about the N26 app or services.

Eir do direct debit to card - well a recurring payment for most accounts. No real advantage to using IBAN based DD.

None of the reps(including in stote) would give me that offer to start up an account. I was told I could switch later after my IBAN was setup.

Have been using N26 since Xmas. Not as my main bank yet but plan to go that way eventually. Only issue i have found is Lotto wont accept its card online. I love the spaces Round Ups etc.

Main reason I prefer N26 over Revolut (I have both) is the N26 webapp as I do most of my financial stuff on desktop. Although Revolut have upgraded its weppapp in recent times its still pretty basic. But for a majority of users there is obviously not much demand for this.

Big advantage of a traditional DD over a card payment is you can recall a DD for up to 8 weeks (or 13 months for an unauthorised DD) which, when it comes to incorrect payments etc is a whole lot easier & quicker than requesting a refund to your debit card in my experience. Also a lot easier to cancel a DD

So I have an N26 for a small sideline I have. But I wanted to use the spaces feature, so I wanted set up a monthly transfer from my salaried BOI acc for holidays. Just to keep it separate. But BOI says I can only set up SO to an Irish bank. Is there any way to set up a monthly payment amt from BOI to N26??

I have a similar issue with AIB. I just do a manual payment from AIB banking when my salary is credited. No big deal as it only takes less than 2 minutes to log in, transfer & log out.

It’s remembering to do it is my issue. Might just have to if there is no other option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭wassie

It's frustrating that in 2022 that we cant have basic automations such as this. Irish banks are years behind other countries when it comes to their apps. Then when they finally rollout 'new' features they rave like its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

AIB still force us to use their clunky card reader for non-irish IBANs, despite having 2FA for mobile & app available.....so 2010!!

I had a standing order from Kbc to N26 set up without issues. Shame good banks like them are leaving and we're stuck with the pre historic ones.

I have a standing order from AIB to N26.

I guess you have to add the account as a payee?

  • Registered Users Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

You set up a standing order with new account. You will need the card reader to set up new account. Then it just goes every month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭wassie

Good to know. I wasnt able to when N26 first came out and never bothered checking since.

  • Registered Users Posts: 980 ✭✭✭harmless

Has anyone managed to make a payment on nct.ie or axa.ie with N26 this year?

I'ved used it to pay for both since I opened an account in 2018 and this is the first time I've had a problem. It just fails to pay with no error message.

Just beware that they're very specifically not for business use with personal accounts and will close / freeze accounts if they think they're being used for business purposes, even for a small side line. They don't seem to offer business accounts in Ireland yet and it seems there's a very hard distinction between business / personal in their T&Cs.

Has anyone had their verification to open an account fail recently? Got a mail saying they couldn't open an account

Got onto chat and they said to try again in the future. But it still says pending in the app.

  • Registered Users Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

Opened mine just before Xmas. Opened OH 2 weeks ago. There not opening free accounts.

Maybe they reached their limit for the month.

The German financial regulator put a cap of the number of new accounts it can open each month until they have resolved a number of issues related lapses in money laundering controls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,757 ✭✭✭richieffff

Might try again the start of next month, if it'll let me. Waited a good while on the wait list too.

I'd use Revolut only the App layout annoys me for some reason, can never find anything

  • Registered Users Posts: 980 ✭✭✭harmless

I've only had issues with Irish websites. I've yet to be rejected by any other country in the EU and UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭henke

Has this worked for anyone changing to recurring card online? I tried inputting the N26 card details (because no option for the N26 IBAN and an getting a splash screen that just says 'Updating Direct Debit" and it stays like that and nothing happens 😥. Tried a few times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭wassie

I had same happen. You need to contact custmer services direct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭henke

Thought as much. As long as it's doable relatively painless. Thanks.

Well I contacted customer services and they would not accept the card and said the first 6 digits of the card give an unsupported bank and then said they don't accept N26. Did you actually get it rectified?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,512 ✭✭✭Wheety

The lotto is a strange one. They announced before that they started accepting Revolut and N26 cards. It worked for a while as I was using my N26 to top up. But it has stopped working again. Have they announced this anywhere?

  • Registered Users Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

Its abit rediculous. Not sure why. Its a debit card not a credit card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭jrmb

That's a weird one. State Savings insists that you use an Irish debit card too (but I'm probably better off not using State Savings 😉).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

I got on to customer services for Revolut and N26 and they told me they didn't accept. I suggested (politely) that they had to accept all EU cards, they said they didn't know that I could try and change it once I had an Irish bank card. I didn't want to give them hassle so I left it at that and tried to add at a later date.

Long story short, I have had so much hassle with eir since then, that, that was the least of my worries. Bills would be more than double of the contract agreed price, loads of 'mistakes' that are I guess easier for the customer to control with Revolut or N26. I have never been able to get N26 to work, so I just pay the bills manually and can't wait for my contract to finish in July.

If I was an elderly person, or somebody that doesn't really question extra charges, I would be milked by them.

They have to accecept IBANs regardless of country but do they have to accecpt debit cards for all EU countires?

Is there an EU ruling on this?

BTW it was probably a lucky escape not signing up with EIR.

Interestingly Revolut are transferring all existing accounts their new Irish Banking licence on 1 July 2022, these will now be irish current accounts and will not suffer this problem. I have both but prefer N26 as I don't like Revoluts spammy app, but this does give it an advantage over N26 now that they soon wont suffer from IBAN discrimination.

Just because Revolut will have an Irish bank license, that doesn't mean that suddenly Irish Iban will appear. As far I know Revolut with an Irish bank license will continue operate with a Lithuanian IBAN as it's their main bank licence for EU customers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

Yes, I was aware that they had to, but they just refused. Not a lot I could do on the day. They did tell me that I could try and change the payment method once I was signed up, but it was still not possible to add either.

Does anybody know if I could top up N26 in the post office if I hand them cash, or is it only Irish banks? I'm guessing only Irish, but if anybody could confirm for me, as I would like to try it tomorrow, it's a bit of distance to the post office.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,237 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

I'm still confused as to where this Irish Bank License all over sudden comes from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,237 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

You cannot pay money into your N26 account in an Irish Post Office.

Well strictly speaking you could do a western union to your N26 bank account and pay with cash, but that cost is just horrendous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭Citrus_8

Previously their Lithuanian bank licence wasn't activated in Ireland, now it will be. It's not an Irish bank license, to be specific. Simply Revolut in Ireland is becoming a bank, no longer just a Fintech.

That is not what wassies post implied which is why I questioned the source.

Revolut Payment UAB is merging with Revolut Bank UAB and hence all customers are becoming Revolut Bank UAB customers.

Using the EU passport function is significantly different than having a new Irish Bank License (full or specialised).

You may be right. This is from Revolut itself.

Your account with Revolut Payments UAB will be transferred to Revolut Bank UAB and become a current account. Your current IBAN will remain the same.

Anyway to keep the physical N26 card without paying the you subscription

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭wassie

Not sure exactly what your asking - might want to re-read your question there. Are you asking about free accounts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭wassie

"The Amsterdam-based company, which was founded a decade ago, will be first so-called neobank in the market to offer accounts with Irish Ibans.

...While it is illegal for an employer of a company, such as a utility business or hire-purchase operator, to refuse to accept Ibans from the Single European Payments Area (Sepa), Bunq chief operations officer Gerald Gruber said consumers across Europe were having to grapple with “Iban discrimination on a large scale”.

Seems IBAN discrimination is an issue on the continent also if that article is anything to go by.

As @Yggr of Asgard pointed out above, Revolut don't have Irish IBANS and neither do N26, so this will give BUNQ a bit of an edge. If they can convert a reasonable amount of Ulster & KBC ex-customers, they may do well here in Ireland.

    They also do joint accounts.

My free N26 you subscription is coming to an end and the email says if I don't renew they will cancel the physical card. I'm wondering is there a way to keep it without renewing the premium subscription

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭wassie

Yep - sorry I may have misread that myself.

Im not 100% sure but looking through the FAQs it doesnt seem to be specifically answered, but inferred that you may not able to use the card if you downgrade from a premium account (i.e. N26 You) to a standard (free) account

If you choose to stop your renewal, you can continue to use your N26 Mastercard and all your premium membership benefits until your membership expires. That means you’ll keep your insurance coverage (for N26 You and N26 Metal) for as long as you’re still required to pay your membership fee. After that, a Virtual card will be issued to you on the contract anniversary date immediately upon downgrade. There is a minimum balance requirement of €10. No need to contact us about it, it will be processed automatically.

You should contact then in the chat app to confirm if this is the case or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,237 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

You can order a new physical card for 10€ once your account has been downgraded and a virtual card has been issued. That is if you need a physical card and cannot use the virtual card via apple/google pay.

It would be easier if you could just continue to keep the current card for 10€ directly, try to get onto support (while you still have priority access) and see if they can help you archive that.

For anyone that has tried switching their eir direct debit to N26 I am trying to fill in the paper mandate eir requires for International bank transfers. There are two fields on the form. Unique Mandate reference and Creditor Identifier - does anyone know where I can the info for both of these fields? Thank you.

And tell them in doing so it would be more sustainable and assist in reducing their Environmental Footprint that they have commited to reducing. Otherwise its just greenwashing BS.
