Hmmm still can't get it. Some boxes can be cranky, like mine.

The EPG goes live tomorrow apparently

edit have it - full details for Manhattan Plaza HDR boxes

    10964.00
    22000 H
    QPSK
    DVB-S2

Channel 5 have confirmed that it will be launching on Freeview tomorrow, not today, so perhaps it won't be added to the Freesat EPG until overnight tonight/tomorrow, so they are saving the announcement until then? Most Freesat STB's automatically retune themselves overnight so people will automatically get it anyway.

Tomorrow on Freesat - full set of main five channels in HD from tomorrow!! Took long enough.

Seems to have shown up on the freesat bouquets (at least London HD bouquet I use) ... am getting the EPG now also ...

Now the first page of my channel list (7 channels per page) is all HD. Its like the actual 21st century all of a sudden.

Is it showing today for anyone on the Freesat EPG?

It will be on the EPG at some point this morning, around lunchtime or just before is when the updates usually happen. You've waited years, what's a few more hours? :D

Yes there for me now too after a scan.

The interesting thing is Channel 5 SD has gone fully from the EPG and rather irritatingly any scheduled recordings have not transferred to the HD channel they appear to be gone.

Channel 4 should do the same and replace 104 with the HD version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Rick_

Yes, HD viewers get the HD channel, SD viewers get the SD channel. Very sensible and saves cluttering up the EPG.

The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 can't do this yet for everyone because there are so many regions and, in C4's case) the HD channel they have is for one particular region, so lots of viewers wouldn't get local ads and that would be disastrous for them.

So until every region has a HD variant, you will not see for example BBC 2 NI or Channel 4 HD on 102 / 104 respectively. We already have BBC 1 NI HD and UTV on 101 and 103 (on Sky at least, not sure about Freesat) so we are part of the way there.

Just rebooted and nothing showing, surely I don't need to rescan?

    Yes, you do. :)

It's appeared this morning on my Mediaportal setup using the Sky EPG plugin. All we need now is for More4 to join the club and I'll be happy ... there's a lot of Scandi noir stuff on More4 at the moment and that would certainly benefit from being in HD.

So its everywhere except on the Irish Sky epg! I know its on the 'other channels' but it would be nice to series link and record programmes.

A classic case of being crippled by the Sky Box.

Channel 5 do not want to incur the extra expense of being made available on the Irish Sky EPG; this has been their position since launch :)

Ironically a decent FTA receiver (or a Freesat box) would do that job for you.

Commercial breaks during programmes designed for none; destroying mood-important credits; and paying for the priviledge.

    Why? :confused::)

because it is the only way to access many some shows' latest episodes (e.g. GoT and Silicon Valley). Personally I don't subscribe to the world of Sky, but I totally get why people do.

I gave no methods but - there are both legal AND illegal ways as it happens...

I use a legal way of getting all those US programmes (and some that just don't run here) and they usually run the day after US broadcast. On Sky Atlantic it can be months later ;)

Overall pretty impressed by the Channel 5HD Freesat launch. :) Thread title is out of date now.

Has anyone checked out the 5.1 audio? .. I don't have the equipment to try it out...

There's an insistence on rigidly sticking to topic around here as opposed to letting conversation flow dynamically and organically :D

On topic: the test went very well, didn't it?

I hoped people would take the hint with my last post, but apparently not. There is NO discussion of copyright violation here. Next post on that issue gets a warning. Any post replying to this one also gets a warning. If people continue not to discuss Channel 5, the thread gets closed. Hope I'm clearer this time.

Find it strange that no one has asked the obvious question of why to Ch5 are using a DVB-S TP rather than a DVB-S2 for its modulation for this HD channel.

Does Channel 4 HD use the same by any chance?

    It does. DVB-S QPSK 22000 5/6

I'd guess it's because they rent one transponder from the satellite company and have to host both SD and HD content on it. Therefore it remains as DVB-S to accommodate older SD boxes.

Hmm why is there a difference in the use of DVB-S and DVB-S2 between the various broadcasters? My Manhattan Plaza box has a strange glitch which means the DVB-S2 transmissions are unwatchable unless the ambient temp is warm whereas DVB-S is fine.

    Tough guy? :D:D:D

Ah its a Frank Rizzo thing.

Why use a lossy DVB-S TP instead of the accepted satellite broadcast standard for MPEG4 H264.

Buzz in if you know the answer pal and enough of your sidetracking.:)

As mentioned above, unfortunately if a HD broadcast channel shares transponder space with SD channel(s) then it has to be DVB-S standard so that SD receivers can process the SD channels.

I had it tuned in yesterday & the picture quality is a much bigger improvement in HD.

I'm able to see programmes like Gotham, World Rally Championship highlights, Football League highlights & other various things like transport documentaries in HD which is a big plus. My mum likes their programmes which are about pet animals. She will seeing one one of those programmes on the secret life of puppies tomorrow night at 9pm.

Gotham looked like utter crap in SD so I'm grateful to finally get the HD version FTA now. Happy Days. :)

Who would have thought it a few short years ago ? The five UK terrestrial channels available all over Ireland in glorious HD free to air. It doesn't seem that long ago since I was watching a grainy/snowy BBC Wales and HTV via a deflector on the Galtee mountains and thinking it was brilliant ! Meanwhile, we will have a long wait I fear, for TV3, TG4 and UTV Ireland to even go HD on Saorview, never mind satellite.

Being a sky customer I don't tune to CH5 very often but can anyone here tell me were there recent episodes made of Stobart truck's and trailers? When the card trick died it's the only thing from CH5 that I miss.
