Well they might offer to stands to people who would offer something like this? I suppose they might have go out of their way to find people like this.

Would anyone really want to set their stall up there if they had a reputable product? Probably not.

    Why not? Huge footfall there.

I don't think inner city dwellers are going to be serving us up artisan breads and organic chilli relishes or smoked gubbeen cheddar, etc!

I dunno, if they can make money from it somehow you never know... you probably wouldn't need (or want) to go the whole D4 "farmers" market EUR 20 loaves of "Rustic" breads and pots of honey puked up by "Organic" bees route. Potential customers for that probably won't leave their known south inner city comfort zones for Christmas shopping anyway.

I've no problem with seasonal stalls on the street and am old enough to see it as a Dublin tradition, but it needs changes.
They moved to selling Chinese imported stuff/"knock-offs" (think it was weighted more to confectionery paper and cheap xmas decorations when I was a kid??) so maybe the stalls could move on to something else now? There are so many very cheap sources for that now, both online and high-street they can't be doing well out of it any more.

Would have these suggestions/ideas for the future...

There are too many stalls on the street all packed tightly together.
The council could say if they can't or won't improve what they have for sale, they will lose their slot.

The council should provide some "free" (no extra charges) infrastructure for an improved version of these stalls too as quid pro quo, maybe huts + power at least instead of the steel cages/portable generators with no sound insulation that they use which make a racket and don't look great on the street.

The people with generational holds on these pitches may not make as much as they did out of it if they need to find new suppliers or a partner/producer for new product to sell, but if it isn't changed up, maybe market forces might take care of it? As you said the setup right now is not really any good at all for selling some better/more attractive (& expensive) products, & no more buyers for what they do sell now means no stalls in future at all perhaps.

edit: That would be quite sad imo...

    Thought they only sold ****

Why don’t customs confiscate all the fake rubbish they sell?

Because then there'd be nothing left on the stall, gone would be the fancy underwear etc
