When is the Long Woman's Grave story dated? Lots of versions of it online - Cauthleen O'Donnell, descendant of exiled O'Donnell nobles in Spain, is brought home to Ireland by Lorcan O'Hanlon, the gullible second son of the chief of that name; Lorcan has been duped out of his inheritance of land by his elder brother Conn, who told him he'd divide the land with him, giving him all the land he could survey, but then brought him to stand in a hollow in the mountains. Lorcan then went into the merchant trade and made his fortune, and brought home Cauthleen from Spain to be his bride. Bringing her to stand in the same hollow, he told her that this was their land, and she dropped dead of chagrin; Lorcan disappeared, a presumed suicide. Locals made the grave, and later built a car park around it…

But when? The O'Donnells left for Spain in the Flight of the Earls on 14 September 1607, so it has to be at least a mid-17th-century story. Is there any local dating on the story?

There's so many variations around. I've heard that the grave was further up from the road but that the old lady who showed people about started to bring stones from it down to the road as she began to age so she could eventually point it out from her car.

Ye sure it wasnt a certain now deceased Carlingford publican spinning a yarn and sending gullible tourists off with some auld one to show the way. Dump a few rocks in a heap at the side of the road back 1950ish stick a plaque somewhere around and a legend is born along with the passing trade. Sits nicely with Edward Bruce being buried at Faughart or him being crowned in Dundalk - bulldung!

This isn't true? Have always believed both were pretty much accepted. It was 700 years ago so pretty difficult to prove either way

Nope Edward Bruce was dismembered and parts of the body sent all over the kingdom. His head went to London. 700 years ago isnt that long really from an historical perspective especially for larger events like the Bruce Ireland campaign. St Patrick being excommunicated by the Roman Catholic church is another interesting one where myth becomes 'history'. He didnt teach things like the holy trinity (so there goes the shamrock story) among other things so was chucked out of the church. Therefore he was never beatified so not a saint in normal terms. We know this because the papal bull still exists in the Vatican archives that communicated his exit from the church and why. You'd be surprised with the amount of tall tales world-wide that get busted at University where history is taught in a far more evidenced based manner.

    Produce that bull, do.

I cant as I no longer have access to the University resources and especially journals and archives that deal with the various disputes between the Irish Church and the Vatican, that lead to the request by the papacy for Henry II to 'enter' Ireland to reform the church. The excomminication is part of these disputes.

Here is a piece that may set you on the way to with the names of a few of the protagonists.............

two bulls were read by John of Salisbury, who had come from Rome bearing the final decree of Alexander,. ...Under a florid profession of Christian zeal it contained a bitter denunciation of the Irish Church...and promised Henry the favor of Heaven and an illustrious renown should he succeed in planting true religion in the home of Patrick and Columba. Alexander’s bull was still more effective, for it excommunicated all who resisted Henry’s authority or that of his heirs...every Irish patriot was converted into a child of Satan; every aspiration of freedom was an impious defiance of the Roman Church.

That was a political move some 700 years after Patrick lived.

Irrelevant! One doesnt have to be living to be excommunicated.

The facts for excommunication were also irrelevant at that time, when they were using the process for political ends.

The excommunication occurred, the reasons were given, whatever legitimacy those reasons have i'm not concerned with now. Although I could push the Irish Church v Vatican much further back but its not relevant here now either.

I made a statement and was challenged on it as 'not altogether accurate' and coupled with a snotty prove it also. Where were the inaccuracies? and while not having a link to the papal bull in question I did provide additional info that has been indicated as accepted since by the subsequent comments.

The 'St' Patrick's story contains many truths and myths - banished snakes and and shamrock stories are obviously factual ones....18th century religious political and social manipulations of the story for the purposes of that time and has stuck with us.

That's just a paste of the bibliography from Confessio.ie

Yes I know! As I said I used it as a source for reading for my own piece of work albeit before the site went live.

Lots of bull there, but none of it papal.

Thats really clever mark did it take long to come up with that word play? Resorting to pettiness when unable respond to valid and reasoned points isnt surprising considering your posts. I'm surprised at you Srameen tbh! You haven't offered much to discuss any points made either bar tacit agreement that excommunication did occur but reasons for were motivated by politics, its a pity that you havent explained why you initially disagreed. Anyway enough.

Nesta, why not just say "I studied this stuff in Uni and completed a thesis on this subject"? I'm sure that most of us readers would have been happy to stipulate as to your expertise on the matter.

Your copied and pasted list was petty and pointless.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,068 ✭✭✭Nesta99

You misunderstand the purpose of posting the list Locum-motion. Far from petty or pointless, I was to provide proof on what i'd posted, said I couldn't as I no longer had access to resources but I did find the bibliography that I used as a go to for reading and I posted it. I dont believe anything that i'd said at the top of that post indicates anything different. What was actually petty was the subsequent snideness by a poster especially after reasoned development of my original post. You are wagging the finger in the wrong direction!
