Hope I can explain this properly but the thing that holds the top screw in the back box of the cooker switch has broken off and the screw is now loose. My problem is that the box is surrounded by tiles and it can't be replaced without damaging the tiles. Is there an easy fix? Would it be possible to drill through the box into the wall and fix a longer screw or is this unsafe?

Is the back box metal or plastic?

If it's the sliding screw holder then sometimes it's possible to slip a new one in. If not then drill a 5.5mm hole into the brickwork behind the broken holder. Insert red or yellow rawl plug. Then get a long socket screw and cut it to length.(to go all the way into rawl plug) With a bit of patience you can get it to thread into rawl plug.

    Note
When cutting the screw, cut it at the sharpest angle you can(not straight across)this will make threading easier

Use a self-tapping screw, be careful not to screw into wires...
