As far as I'm aware the chrome plate is an arm rest. stops you ripping you shirt (or arm) on the skin tension nuts.

as to value? sorry not in the know.....

McBrides are grand beginner banjos, how much do want to spend? Have you considered Adverts/DoneDeal?
