Strangely when I log into my greyhound account there is no general waste collection history. Only green bin weight is available.
    Anyone else?

My Greyhound history shows Black and Brown weights, nothing for green. Always been like that

Revenue neutral!!! They're taking the mick.
But sure, how'll we know what their accounts are saying as they are safely hidden away in the Isle of Man

100% of waste in my black bin belongs there. I recycle everything that can be recycled.
Who are these people who throw everything into the black bin and can't be bothered to recycle...according to Greyhound, the vast majority of people aren't recycling!!!

The whole '90% of people will save according to the department' thing is bullsh1t because it's clearly based on the minimum charges, not on charging the ridiculous 35 cent per kilo for the black bin.

There is no way this'll be Revenue neutral. Waste companies are going to be profiting by at least double if not treble compared to current charges.

I'll hold my hands up if I'm wrong but I can't see how people, if already recycling, are going to be saving money on these new charges.

Mine shows weight for everything, Green, Brown and Black. They might not have the correct chip in your bin for your account, or it could also be one of those chips that was around a few years ago sold in markets, chip that bin was collected and you didn't pay anything.

Am I right in saying the 'Weight' heading on the 'Lift Charges' page for Thorntons customers shows the amount in KG?

If that's the case, based on the amount of times I put my Black Bin out last year, my annual charge will go from €139 to €135.

If it shows your KG per bin lift - 30, 40 or whatever, add them all up for the year and then multiply that figure by 0.35. Add an extra €104 (service charge) to that total and that's how much it'll cost you from July 1st 2016 to May 31st 2017 if you have the same weight. Unless you don't put out your bin at all then there's no way you'll be €135, it may be €239 (when service charge added)

Just added up my usage for the past year with Thornton's. Last years bill was €185 including the service charge of €50. Going by July 2016 rates my bill will be €276 including the €104 service charge. This is turning out to be a bigger scam than the water rates.

There was a very small segment on liveline today about the charges (towards the end of the show) - hopefully more callers will ring in tomorrow.

Yeah, you're right. My maths was all wrong.

Here's my last year and a bit of charges from Thorntons:

    Date Weight Waste Type Cost
    06/06/2016 00:00 28 General Waste €9.90
    23/05/2016 00:00 25 General Waste €9.90
    14/03/2016 00:00 25 General Waste €9.90
    18/01/2016 00:00 31 General Waste €9.90
    23/11/2015 00:00 40 General Waste €9.90
    23/11/2015 00:00 8.5 Excess Weight Charge €1.60
    14/09/2015 00:00 20 General Waste €9.90
    20/07/2015 00:00 27 General Waste €9.90
    08/06/2015 00:00 23 General Waste €9.90
    13/04/2015 00:00 27 General Waste €9.00

So when I total up the 'Weight' column I get 254.5.

    254.5 x .35 = 88.9

    88.9 + 104 = €192.9

An increase of €53. Or forty something per cent. Cheers Thorntons :(

You see that excess weight charge you got landed with on the 23/11/15? Well that's me after every one of my lifts, the joys of dumping nappies!!

Over last 12 months I've put out 492kg of General waste costing me €184 (incl service charge). The same a year after this July 1st, with increased service charge, will cost me €276.

I urge everyone on here who's getting a whopping increase to contact the Show. The more that ring/email in the better, especially if we can get a geographical spread and make it a national issue.

    Get on it ;)

Did my figures based on the last 12 months

    Was paying GH €17 pm = €204

    Now the choices are
    GH = €658
    CB = €572
    Thornton = €626.

I'm screwed with an increase of €368 ..so much for cost neutral !!

at least 2/3 of your waste is probably compostable, so that could go in the "brown" bin (probably not nappies though). That would give you a total of 175 or so.

There was up until 2011 a tax relief for refuse charges - I wonder if this might make a re-appearance as a sweetener for this whole plan.

My figures are very similar. Family of 5 and everything that can go into the green bin does go into the green bin :(

my waste bin is about 50-70kg every fortnight. The compost bin is a bucket that you can't lift if its too heavy.

Brace yourself for a €700 annual bill. And that's without even using your compost bin.

Speaking from experience, pay by weight was introduced in my area (town in west of ireland) last summer. I live alone and recycle as much as possible so only put the black bin out twice a year and the blue bin (recyclables) out twice a year. Under pay by weight (inc the service charge of €7 per month) my yearly bill has increased from €38 per year to €90 per year. can't change as only 1 operator in our area. Be prepared to be ripped off Dublin.

Is it possible to not use bins just use the bring and recycling centres?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,308 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Just checked my own rates. Don't put black bin out every fortnight but it's regularly over the limit by 5kg or so

For last months cost to me was €111. Same cost with new charges €171. (thats with half the yearly charge, and with the new €2 a week charge)

So about an increase of €10 a month

Would it be an option for anyone to scrap their bin altogether and use the dump? Use the bring banks for your recycle material and then when you can fill your car with bin bags go to the dump and it's €15 a go. May be a possible alternative for some

city bin same annual charge as greyhound €139 or €12.95 monthly though their weight charges are slightly cheaper

Did anyone get to listen to Joe Duffy?

Ive just been onto greyhound. The prices are the prices and they aren't willing to match CityBin.

To cancel greyhound email them at info@greyhound.ie

I assume PBW will be introduced at the dump as well. If you have space to compost your food waste it may be an option though as you could avoid the service charge.

I emailed Pascal last night with my figures and got an email today from his secretary saying my figures must be wrong. I've sent her on my spreadsheet and calculations.

    Lets see what happens!

I also messaged their customer services manager on LinkedIn. I asked him if its their policy to loose customers and not price match. I'll let you know what he says :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭jay0109

It didn't feature on Joe Duffy today sadly. I was hoping this would get some momentum.
Instead the show focused in historic issues of people who's parcels/letters went 'missing' in the An Post network.
Whereas the waste charges are a live issue...go figure.

I got the same BS from a couple of politicians that my figures must be wrong until I showed them exactly the workings behind it.
They are totally out of touch with reality.

The guys in Greyhound reckoned I don't recycle enough when I showed them my workings...maybe I should start throwing nappies and cooked food waste into the green bin and see how they get on with recycling that lot
