Hi,

He'll need:
A MicroSD (This acts as the harddrive). This needs to be 8gb for the operating system i will suggest later. https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/sd-cards.md
A HDMI cable to connect to his monitor
A Mouse & Keyboard

If you do get it, make sure it is the 2.0 version (More power/ram/etc)

The MicroSD needs to have the operating system on it: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/ The Noobs one would suit you fine. You can either download it from there and put it onto the card, or you can buy it pre-installed on a card from ebay/amazon.

As for if its any good, i think yes, its great for programming/hobby projects, media streaming, etc.

You can also get 'kits' of the R-Pi 2 which will have such essentials as case, power supply, card with operating system etc.

A wireless keyboard touch mouse combo might also be handy to have. Rather than using up 2 of 4 USB ports on a separate mouse and keyboard.

Depends what he would be using it for.

I bought a few for various projects and it failed misrebly at doing any of them. It just about worked as a Kodi media streaming device, but suffered from horrible amounts of crashes and issues that I gave up and built a HTPC. Tried using it as a download manager and it was horrendous at that also.

The height of use I got from mine was using it as an IRC bouncer(a 24/7 365 connection), but then that become irrelevant since my main PC is always on.

I've a few of them just sitting a drawer gathering dust.
