Is studying at BIMM just a waste?

I'm totally confused as to what to do - I love music and I want to study it, but I also want a degree that means something.

The Trinity course has a strong focus on classical music which I don't like it. I can also study French with it, which is safe and I have an interest in it.

The course at BIMM looks interesting, but I'm not sure if it is a worthwhile degree. I want to be a singer of course, but I have realistic expectations about it. I'm afraid that after 4 years, I'll leave college with basically nothing. Because if I don't make a living out of music, which is hard to do, I have pretty much nothing else to do.

Can anyone help me out? I already dropped out once and I need to make the right choice.

Just as some general advice, there is no such thing as a waste of a course. Every course is what you make of it and what you get out of the facilities offered. You are making lots of connections in college and have access to good gear. College is less about the specific course and more about having the keys to a set of tools that can get you started out there. I would recommend talking to those in the course and graduates to see what they have to say before deciding.

A friend of mine studied music in Cork and now she is a successful professional musician, though it is a slippery slope to ascend to her heights.

Just do what your heart is into.

If you want to be a singer, sing. I've a degree in music. Nobody's ever asked to see it before I played.

If you want to do a course, do one in something useful.
