3D movies

I've never seen a 3D movie where the 3D actually added to the experience (except Gravity).

It just means an extra few euro on the ticket price and another pair of 3D glasses added to the collection.

What do people think. Is 3D a waste of money?

Only certain movies are worth seeing in 3D. Animated movies are usually the best ones to watch in the format.

Check out realorfake3D before going to watch any movie in 3D

I've put together this crude flowchart which I think definitively answers your queries OP:

Funny you say that, because the OP said Gravity was the only movie he ever saw where it added to the experience - Gravity was not shot in 3D.

There are plenty of good 3D movies, but the format gets a bad name from the far greater number of post production jobs which are usually incredibly mediocre.

Lol Gravity is almost entirely real 3D because of how much CGI was used. Aside from the characters and some scenes inside ships. The owner of that site included it as a hybrid

" 11. Many have emailed about how it's mostly real 3D. Here's a behind-the-scenes of the conversion process. My gripe is that the main characters, the people, were shot in 2D. However, this is a unique movie. Most of it takes place in space, where the suits were rendered in real 3D, with the faces super-imposed within the actual suit. So it's not inaccurate to say that 90% of it is real."

But I do hope you realise I agree with your second half of your post. That's why I linked to that website, it shows the movies filmed in 3D and the post converts. Avatar and Life of Pi are two of the other best 3D movies and the reason for that is because the effort was made to shoot them in the format and make full use of what's possible. It's sad that more directors won't do the same because it actually can really enhance certain movie experiences.
