Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

cats eating bones

My cat goes insane for chicken wings. I'm kinda insane for them myself. I give her two of them (never more than that) and she eats the bones. My mother told me this is very dangerous and she shouldn't be eating cooked bones. I adore my cat, I don't like to deprive her but I never want to put her in danger.

Anyone got the science on this please?

Chicken bones in particular are bad for animals to eat and even more so if they are cooked. They are hollow and splinter very easily which can lead to complications for the animal. If it were me I would stop feeding them to the cat.

I would think the science is that the bones splinter or could get stuck in the throat, kinda common sense as such.. Just pull the meat off the bone for your cat

Cooked bones splinter. RAW bones are fine though and raw chicken wings would be the perfect size for a cat.

Many cats who are allowed outside regularly hunt & eat their prey including the bones. One of ours used to eat rabbits she caught that we could not rescue quick enough. Cooked bones are not suitable.

Bone is fine (helps keep their teeth clean) as long as they are raw as noted below; you could as for chicken necks (more meat, less bone) in your local butcher (and always freeze them through and through for 48h before serving).

Would COOKED chicken/duck necks be ok for a cat/dog to eat? The bones being small and 'soft' Ive wondered about this? My guys look at me when I hand them raw wings as if to say COOK IT!! (You know the way your pets look at you sometimes, as if you are a total moron :D)

I'd not be comfortable doing it even if the chance is greatly reduced due to bone size in necks.
