Given that I have €300 - €350 to spend and with the below specs, what is the best card that I could get?
Really need to replace the 6870 (will need to replace the i5 [and MB and everything else] too at some stage but one thing at a time)

    8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9
    ASRock Z68 Pro3 (B3), Sockel 1155, ATX
    Intel Core i5-2500K Box, LGA1155
    Sapphire HD6870 1G GDDR5 PCI-E DL-DVI-I+SL-DVI-D / HDMI / DP
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB SATA 6GB's
Super Flower 80 Plus Bronze Series Netzteil - 550 Watt
    256GB SSD Toshiba

    Either an R9 390 or a GTX 970.

The 390 is a little better if you don't care about gameworks which you probably shouldn't.

Your 2500k should be fine for a few more years if you have it overclocked.

290s have been floating around on adverst sub €200. Bargain if you get one with a decent cooler.

I don't actually. Might pick up a decent cooler and do that, better tgan forking out cash for replacement

Don't order from newegg. Afaik they ship from the states and you will have to pay VAT on top of that.

The Sapphire Nitro is one of the best if not the best one to get.

r9390 are hard to come by under €350

Can get a GIGABYTE VGA nVIDIA GTX970 4 Go DDR5 (Overclock) for €321 delivered. Worth it?

€341+ delivery, best version of the 390

Where's the 970 coming from? That's a good price. Think I'd take the 390 with your budget

    341

    Buy a secondhand 290!

Edit: Meh my predictions of post xmas budget gaming bonanzas has proven incorrect. Only ones on averts are people asking silly money.

€353 delivered actually. People were happy to pay that for a 970, I don't think it's a bad price. Maybe a little high but its not extortionate.

290's are hot and loud :( Trust me

Have they done anything to change that in the 390 though? I thought it was just a rebadge? I love my 290 but it's on a custom loop. OMG the reference cooler - I've literally been on quieter aircraft!

On price though I'd be loathed to drop the guts of €400 pre polaris/pascal I have to admit but then you can wait forever.

You could also wait and see what 2016 will bring? After all, this jump has been waiting for 5 years now, so maybe Pascal and Arctic Islands (or Solaris depending if the leaks are true) are worth the wait?

Cooler and quieter anyways, lower power consumption

8gb RAM over 3.5 is nice going forward too, if only for stupid HD mods and such :pac:

Mines silent when the fans under 35% (or atlesat quieter than the HDD) so its at a constant state of like 40°C :(

That 970 is a refurb direct from manufacturer and includes delivery.

If there was any date of the new releases I would be more comfortable waiting but been saying that for a year now

The vtx3d r9 390x for €350 from mindfactory is a great deal too.Made by TUL corp, essentially a powercolor pcs+ 390x which has been getting good reviews.

Trying to decide between the 390 and 390x mentioned in this thread, they would both be fine for 1440P gaming yeah? Would there be any point in forking out extra for the asus strix model of the 390?

I think the performance gap between 390 & 390x is so little as to make it not worth the extra cash.

Sapphire is known as the best AMD card in general, but if you want the Asus one, it's going for €360 on Amazon.it minus shipping which is probably about a tenner.

There appears to be a fair difference at higher resolutions.

The VTX3D 390X is basically the same as the PowerColor then? Same company and all, I wonder would there be much of a difference performance wise?

Looking at the two online, the backplates are the same, the pcb looks the same. The specs look the same too 1050mhz.I would have a look and see what you think. Its a 390x for the price of a 390.2 year warranty same as the powercolor. The 390x looks a fair bit more able at the higher res.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 678 ✭✭✭kevovek

Yeah I think I'll go for the VTX3D then, I'm worried about my CPU (FX 6300 @ 4.4Ghz) bottlenecking the card but I've read conflicting reports on different sites as to how much it will actually hold it back.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

    Depends totally on your games.

If they're very CPU intensive, it'll probably hold you back a little, other than that, it'll be fine.
