It's about three years since Dundalk were getting 200 people in to games and on the verge of going out of business. It will come around again.

Three years ago we were winning things, now we're not. That'll come around again too.

Regardless of that, we'll be playing out of a vastly improved stadium because we had the foresight to invest in infrastructure when the going was good. Our current league champions could learn from that.
er... three years ago Dundalk won the title and sligo were 5th?
I wouldnt be too jumpy about things coming around again, sligo spent the first half of the 00s in D1 too and your looking pretty awful this year.
And on speed... sligo didnt have an absolute mess to sort our re owning the stadium / rates etc... and outside of the railway end, how much advances were made on the stadium itself? The main stand opened 2001!

The year under McCaffery., our attendance average was 900 odd....The only time its been below 1000 in years (including 1st division days)

Obviously you know nothing about the problems the current owners encountered in trying to just get hold of the lease on Oriel. To be fair to Sligo they own their ground and it is a credit to them. Sometimes you hear criticism of Oriel from some and you know that they are in the lucky (?) position of never having to spend money on the upkeep or modernisation of the ground they rent (Bohs, Rovers, Cork City, Waterford, Derry all rent). To be fair they are in the minority and know the score about Oriel. Fwiw Dundalk have cleared the previous owners debts on Oriel this year (€400k) and installed a new pitch (€300k) and recently took over the lease. Until then they couldn't do anything with the place.

This is how serious it was

Only resolved in November 2016 , so how fast do you want Dundalk to improve the ground (within planning regulations)

That is some statistic: one year from Dundalk last getting a penalty in the LOI. Must be all their negative play  (Cork apparently have got 13 in the same period).

When we beat Bohs 5-3 in Terryland, 2 years ago next month, was the last time Galway United were awarded a penalty.

Speaking of which, there was a blatant penalty in Bray on Friday. Conor Melody having his jersey pulled off him right in front of the ref, just as he was winding up a shot in the box, following a very good move that opened Bray up. No room for interpretation. It was just a penalty. Referee ignored, despite being right behind it and no players obstructing him. Local media agreed.

Ok slightly more than three years. Not much more. We didn't have a mess to sort out because we haven't been shambolically run, so a dig at the club for not giving our ground away for free from supporters of a club that haven't notion how to manage their own ground is a bit rich.

Most noticeable improvement is the tarmac from the entrance right around the ground. It's cleaned, it's painted, it's taken care of like no other non-council ground in the country.

I never had a dig at sligo fc or the showgrounds its a fine ground, just your post... (although if sligo go down this year it may prove a pretty shambolic decision by the board to vote for the 10 team league ;) )

You went around claiming of huge glory years investment but if you look at the outlay of both clubs over the last 10 years im pretty sure Dundalk is going to beat you with the money they spent this year. Which do you think cost more, your tarmac & the railway stand or clearing a huge debt, legal bills and astro?

Giving out because they havnt a new stand already shows just how little you know about the legal issues there or a basic design/build process. Try building a house and see how long it takes let alone a multimillion redevelopment with legal issues.

I wouldn't argue with CL, but Dundalk spend a lot of time in the opponents half of the pitch and a sizeable portion of that in the penalty area. No coincidence that the most goals scored in a league of Ireland season is held by the Dundalk team of 2015 (78 goals, previous record was 1923 Shamrock Rovers) last year was 73 including the penalty :) ( which was against Sligo and was doubtful)

You're missing the point here. The dundalk fan taking shots at my club as if his own wasn't a complete joke up to a few years ago is what i had a problem with. The fact that they still haven't sorted the issues they have gives them less of a right to talk, regardless of the reasons they haven't or whether they plan to some day.

Knowing the Brandywell is out of order, and bearing in mind that the league of Ireland (clubs and fans) are in a minority in Ireland, can we not put this shi*te behind us and try and try and help Derry as best we can?

Ps could Derry have opted for the 'other' Showgrounds at Coleraine?

Pps Derry ALWAYS welcome at Dundalk (even if the dugouts favour the home town ( which will be Derry in European matches) :)

In that article he says Dundalk had only been awarded 3 penalties and now this week it's magically none. His comments were bordering on disgrace to be honest.

Few clues in the first sentence when that was said

Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny has praised his two new signings Dean Shiels and Alan Keane. The boss was speaking to dundalkfc.com ahead of the trip to face Bohemians at Dalymount Park tomorrow night

Over a running 12 months the 3 has dropped to zero.

How much did Dundalk for Tallaght last year?

Aviva: north of €100,000. And the club had to pay for new electronic hoarding around the pitch as the one in place didn't conform to Champions League height. (When the fat lady says jump you jump) screwed on security but that's the way things are. Cleared €200,000

Tallaght: €20,000 to South Dublin Co Council per match - but they supplied the stewards and staff for that. + Dundalk had to replace the dugouts and erect a hospitality marquee as Tallaght stadium didn't conform to Europa League standards for hospitality. The club ever only tried to break even on tallaght.

Galway United's run of nearly 2 years without a penalty came to an end tonight. Someone said it was a run of 71 games.

I imagine Stephen Kenny has just woken up in a cold sweat and he isn't sure why.

McKell is out of debth in the league of Ireland premier division. As most clubs know. I wouldn't say hes not impartial but he is shockingly poor. Few blunders over the years with Athlone, Longford and once booked Boyle twice but didn't put him off. P45 time for McKell. there's not much point the FAI crying about the Henri handball when their own house neeeds sorting, Alan Kelly was was the pick of LOI referees and deservedly got the chance to move on). There are too many inconsistancies in refereeing in the LOI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,281 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

Tomney did our game last night and was largely very good, gave the penalty, no random yellow cards, leather get flow, let a couple of strong/fair tackles go. Overall good to see a referee having little impact on a game.

There was a full set of northern referees in for the HarpsSligo game a few weeks ago... Maybe they sent their top ones but the difference was unbelieveable

As much as the orignization of the league deserves bashing, referees is one area they are working on. At local level here in Cork all Refs under 30 are fast tracked into adult football as soon as possible to try to get them up the refs ladder and hopefully to intermediate/ league of Ireland level, ASAP. People need to keep in mind that people aren't lining up around the block to become ref's either

Just because refs are being fast tracked doesn't mean they're good.

Just because refs are being fast tracked doesn't mean they're good.

And where did I say that? I'm simply stating that a conscious effort is been made to rectify the issues. After refs are provided with their training the younger ones are fast tracked as the thinking is that if they turn out good they will still be young enough to make careers out of it. No point in waiting till they are 15/20 years into it and then realizing they are good when they are fit to retire

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,254 ✭✭✭joeysoap

Equally they should 'retire' the piss poor ones asap. McKell falls into this category, that is if he doesn't actually have an agenda.

I dug up the extratime report on a previous match at Oriel. The reporter states that he's gives a dubious penalty against Dundalk yet books the Dundalk player. Later in the match the UCD keeper pulls down a Dundalk player, penalty - no booking. No suggestion that it was a harsh penalty. He booked shields on Friday for a perfectly good tackle, which we will see on soccer republic on Monday.

He's either really piss poor or does have an agenda.

Very much against the run of play, UCD grabbed a second goal in the most dubious of circumstances. Andy Boyle was penalised for a trip inside the box, although it looked like a very harsh decision from the ref. Robbie Benson stepped up and dispatched the penalty confidently. Boyle, who had picked up a yellow card in the 51st minute, appeared to have been booked again by referee Jim McKell, however no red card was forthcoming.

UCD had Conor O’Donnell to thank for keeping the score down, he pulled off a number of top-drawer saves, two in particular from Daryl Horgan. He was, however, powerless to prevent a fifth Dundalk goal as Pat Hoban stroked home from the penalty spot, O’Donnell having taken down substitute John Mountney resulting in the awarding of the spot kick.

No worries, it is the timeframe. Cracking start by City this year, very strong in all departments. Can't see anybody stopping them tbh.

Smart enough to avoid making it a club v club or manager v manager thing, focus on Kenny v refs.

First time iv seen an ambulance on the pitch in Finn Park, not sure if our keeper Doherty has moved in 15mins. Mailey also has a heavily bandaged head. Sligo player needed attention too for a few mins.
Ambulance just back too after bringing banda away.

Make that 2 ambulances on the pitch now. Hse one. the order of Malta one isn't moving him... And a third just came around the stadium, presumable for mailey who walked to the clubhouse...

Never seen anything like it. 25mins added on in the end. The game was like a pre season friendly which makes it even stranger. No dirty tackles, little intensity

Sad time for Derry at present. Really need a win, even a scrappy 1-0.

Doherty reported to be up and walking around again on the forum so thank god for that. Couldnt see any movement the 20mins or so he was down.
Packie was able to walk to the clubhouse, with help.
Banda's 'injury - EDIT: Knee Ligament. - I lost sight of it under the stand but told his supporting leg taken out of it stretching for the ball.
Coll - hip flexor... subbed at half time

Cant help but think what a joke LOI refs are again though. Every player on the pitch had stopped before he blew his whistle. 3 players flat on the ground ffs. What was he waiting for?

Excellent news on Doherty, was very worrying. Wasn't at the game but 25 minute break in play and an ambulance driven onto the pitch is never a good sign.

Poor timing for Bandas injury, I'm sure he'd have been hoping to kick on after the goal at the weekend. Hopefully he's not too long out.

Never enjoyed a win less than that, match abandoned and replayed would be a fairer outcome. Not sure what the rules are but a long break in play like that can't be good for anyone.

Ya ye were poor first half, we were on top and scored from a badly defended corner. We should have scored from another corner shortly after. Ye were better second half, missed a good chance and had another quite well saved but we did well pressing ye towards the end and got the goal from it. Ye played some nice stuff at times but didnt seem to have much killer instinct up top to finish off any of the chances or good possession.

Dundalk awful for the first hour against UCD but eventually showed our class to make it through to quarter finals. 6 out of 7 penos scored this evening. Guess Kenny was right.

His girlfriend put up a pic on twitter of him with thumbs up... And says 7 stitches. Seen a fairly bloody one of packie mailey too so I'm sure he has a few too.

Really bad timing for banda and harps in general. that's all 4 strikers injured... McCourt, Bonner, Molloy from midfield, coll, mailey, Doherty in defence /gk. Hopefully a few are ok for drogs and Milliens work permit comes through!

Dundalks 7 penalties to Cork Citys 1 so far this season shows a complete bias towards the Lilywhites by all LOI referees, I can only hope Caulfield brings this up with the media in a childish and bitter manner, that'll show them.

No keeper came out and clashed with Packie in mid air and bj was just a challenge from Sligo player catching his standing leg.
