We've been brutal on our two away trips to Dublin so far, dubious penalty up at Shamrock and if Bohs could finish they would have got a few against us last week, we are due a good away showing hopefully its tomorrow otherwise Pats have every chance of winning it.

City have only played really well in two 45 minute periods so far this season IMO, 1st half against Dundalk and the second half against Derry, if we can bring that level up a bit we'll surely go on and win it.

Nah played well in a lot more than just two halves definitely. The Rovers one stands out as a pretty poor performance but a lot of the others have been good performances. Even at Bohs, City could have put away a good few as well. I think the Derry and Dundalk ones stand out because they were against 'better' teams.

I said played 'really well' as in if we can get to that level in every game we'll walk this league. Obviously we've been playing ok to win 9 from 9. I just hope we can find a way to get to that higher level could be a very exciting time for City fans if we do.

New Zealand are an actual football side, unlike Oman that's very odd

Gerard Lyttle of Cliftonville is looking like he will be our new manager. Been rumoured all week and he resigned from Cliftonville today..

Preston are starting to feel a bit like Reading did in the noughties in terms of snapping up LOI players.

Dear Preston chairman, read up about the recent history of Leeds United, Barnsley and Cardiff City.

Who could POSSIBLY view Ridsdale as an advisor? At best he is trying to insert himself into transactions. What would he know from viewing Maguire?

No way Cork will sell Maguire. His value from winning Cork the league and potentially getting them through a round or two in Europe will totally exceed any offer a cross channel club will make in the summer.

The only way there would be a slight chance he'd be sold would be if Cork were to pull maybe 15 points clear by the summer and Cork know they have the title won

I think city will sell him if a big enough bid comes in and more importantly a nice sell on clause.

Easy enough win last night without playing particularly well. McEleney didn't look fully fit but Michael Duffy once again was in fine form and his excellent long range drilled efforts sealed the points for the champions.

    Swindon relegated.

Any thoughts on good or bad for Waterford?

    Might be a positive.

Don't think it makes much of a difference to us tbh. Tom Smith that's with us on loan is definitely good enough for League 2 though. Don't know about Jake Evans, haven't really seen enough of him.

I imagine it'll be easier for some of our lads to get a move to them if they want, and we'll be less likely to get players of Smith's quality on loan next year.

All depends on the bid and when his contract is up.

If his contract is up at the end of the season and somebody offers a million now, I doubt they'd turn it down.

Anyone know when his contract is up? Dolan on here?

They'd hardly get a million for a player out of contract in a few months. Clubs still see shopping in Ireland as a massive risk.

Iv heard its the position the club will take though, they will slap a 1 million price tag on him for the summer window otherwise they'll have to wait until end of season. Maguire himself also wants to see out the season with us, he has an excellent relationship with Caulfield and he's after picking up a lasher down here aswell.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,815 ✭✭✭D14Rugby

Is maguire still young enough that he'd cost compensation to but even if out of contract? If he is then a million is probably what he's worth to Cork when you consider that he could be what wins them the league which would mean at least one round of champions league next year, and gets them through a few rounds in Europe plus compensation he's worth a million wouldn't be far off that.

Think compensation runs out when you turn 23. Seanie is 23 in May. But there appears to be a retention clause ( that I don't understand) that says your club can retain you if they offer you an enhanced (even by €1 a year)contract.

Horgan was 24 when he signed for Preston, so no comp for Dundalk, Cork, Sligo or Salthill Devon

I know it's the Sun but they're claiming that Maguire has a buy out clause and will be gone in the summer. Bit of a kick in the nuts for Cork if true

In fairness, The Sun and Neil O'Riordan are well up on LOI info.

Incredibly silly by Cork if this clause is in his contract

You can't force a player to sign a contract. He may have insisted and had the leverage to do so. A buy out clause in July, vs going for free in November, if true, at least nets them something, albeit nominal you'd assume.

It's gotta be an extra motivator for Dundalk to keep plugging away, knowing Cork could be losing Maguire in a few months.

How so? The players hold all the cards in this league, theres little to no negotiating the player says what he wants and thats that. See Kenny Browne bouncing off to Waterford 2 weeks before the start of the season, contracts mean nothing in this league. 150k is a ridiculous sum but if thats what was agreed so that he'd sign for this season then theres not much we can do. I still believe he will stay for the season, its obvious his agent is after feeding this news to the media cause he'd love a good chunk of change but at the end of the day the deal has to suit Maguire.

    Not so sure.
Signing at a championship club in July will give you a better chance of making an immediate impact rather than signing next January.

Its coming out now that we would be due training compensation on top of the buy out clause, which should it happen amount to over 300k. Still not good enough in my eyes but alot better than whats being reported.

Either way he'll either be gone in July or end of season so we need to plan ahead. Reports we've been onto Rory Gaffney over at Bristol and Caulfield has been trying to get Mikey Drennan to come back to full time football if he feels upto it. He's mad after Sadlier aswell from Sligo and is willing to pay a fee in the summer for him.

Sadlier is a great footballer but not a striker. He plays left midfield, Dooley plays there for Cork I think?

Not sure why Cork would get the compensation for Maguire, surely Dundalk, Accrington Stanley and West Ham would all get some. West Ham the majority I'd have thought.

Dont need any extra motivation. If we win our next few games (not 100% as we are not playing very well) and beat Cork, the gap will be at most 6 points with 4 months to play, if Maguire stays or goes, that wont change.

Dooley isnt playing great, if we were to bring in Sadlier one of them would probably move to just behind the striker.

Part in bold, Maguire is contracted to us and thats why we will get the vast majority of compensation, I dont know the ins and outs but the other clubs will get little to nothing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,254 ✭✭✭joeysoap

€170k is €170k more than Dundalk got for Hoban, Towell, Boyle and Horgan combined, but still not near enough for a player of Maguires quality. City are strong this year even without him, but there's no doubt he would be missed. Afaik Boyle and Horgan got 30 month contracts at ?5000 a week. Very hard to turn down that kind if money when it's tied down in a decent length contract.

As for compensation - Dundalk were awarded comp (from Huddersfield I think) for a young player a few seasons ago. They - and the local junior club got zilch - and Huddersfield (?) weren't even made pay it. Other Dundalk posters will remember the young lads name.

Coming out where? Can't see how a club would be entitled to both a transfer fee and training compensation, usually it's one or the other with training compensation coming into it for players under 24 who leave on a free transfer.

You are right. Clubs in Ireland have no leverage. The buy out amount is in the contract to give the player the choice to leave if a serious offer comes in. Maguire would have seen other players have their moves scuppered in the past when clubs failed to honour gentlemens agreements.

If Maguire stays, Cork will have the benefit of his performances in the second half of the season. If he leaves they will get a tidy sum. It is not a bad position to be in.

Why would Accrington Stanley get compensation? He was only on loan there.

Maguire was developed in Waterford and was our best player the year we were beaten by Dundalk in the playoffs.

All this talk of compensation is bull anyway. You can't get a transfer fee and training compensation.

Its a buy out clause lads, not a transfer fee, hence why both can be combined.

We don't know that. A buy out clause on a contract with 6 months to run is hardly a large amount. It would be pointless negotiating to have it inserted in the contract otherwise.

Or to put it more accurately Sligo finally decided to play fair after chancing their arm and trying to rip Derry City off initially.

    From the Derry Journal

DERRY CITY F.C. has confirmed it will stage its UEFA Europa League first round qualifier this summer at the Showgrounds after Sligo Rovers substantially reduced the fee for use of its facilities.

    Read more at: http://www.derryjournal.com/sport/football/derry-city/sligo-showgrounds-confirmed-as-derry-city-s-europa-league-venue-1-7937117

still, nice for Sligo fans to get some European football

Oriel might be a 'kip' now, (bar the away end it's not that bad)but expect major improvements over the next few years. Oriel is a 5 year project, and the owners have literally just got possession.

The Showgrounds is a fine venu.

Thats the same paper that said Sligo looked for 30K in an earlier article. So their source is not very reliable!

This is our third year without European football i think, hardly setting any records there..

Sounds to me like we asked for about what it's worth, taking into account what other clubs have paid to rent stadiums. Dundalk decided to offer their place for nothing. Derry, not wanting to play in Oriel, used that to negotiate a better deal with us.

When Kildipuff is your striker on the bench you are in trouble.

The league is gone for everybody except City now. Congrats City, terrific start, would have blown anybody away.

I'm going to sit back now and enjoy the season. No pressure ( except to qualify for Europe)

I was surprised by how poor ye were, in comparison to previous seasons, not in terms of the league. Vemmelund, mcgrath, massey and Duffy were mostly atrocious. Ye kept the ball but never troubled our keeper really. We just defended well and ye seemed to have little to hurt us. McEleney was probably the best of yours.

More goals conceded in the last 10 minutes cost us points tonight although it sounded like Derry deserved their point at least.
