    Hi Guys,

We recently moved into a new build. I was out weeding the mucky garden and came across the following wire just underground. Has anyone idea what it could be, it appears to be coming from the neighbour's house....at the end of wire appears to be 7 metal strands together, diameter of wire is about 1 cm....

    Any help appreciated?

    Thanks,

    Tim.

7 different coloured individual strands of wire? Basic communications wire often used by eircom etc

    Like this?
    http://www.sprinklersupplies4less.com/foot-direct-burial-conductor-gauge-wire-p-22933.html

Used for all type of low voltage communications and designed for underground use from sensors, alarms comms, but almost always low voltage ie, 12 to 24v so almost certainly harmless.

Thanks for the post, the wires are compact together and not coloured, its has black exterior coating, one centre silver strand surround by six same size strands.

You often find builders just dumped everything into the garden area & threw out a bit of topsoil to make it look like a lawn. That bit of cable may be going nowhere , try digging it out a bit more it may just pull up, unless of course there is a switch inside that appears to be doing nothing , it may be for gates or garden lights in the future

Hi op that is mains SWA cable as the black outer sheath houses the silver inner strands which are there to protect the live, neutral inside.

The strands are earthed and offer the protection if one were to hit with a spade or digger.

    Op are the cables showing?
    Is it connecting anywhere?.

Be sure it is Not live before touching.
