Exactly. When Diesel-mania started in 08, the new VRT regime made the entry level diesel models on many cars the cheapest option to buy.

In 2016, it's more likely that the petrol version is the cheapest.

When the diesel engine version is all you can buy in the car you want, price difference between petrol versions and diesel versions really doesn't come into it

Many simply haven't been (and a lot still aren't) offering petrol options

161-L-2XX Mini Countryman Cooper D in white.

I'm a fan of white in general, but not on this. Looked no better than a Dacia Duster.

    161-C-X - Mokka.

Is there a cost for a single digit reg?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,398 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

    Saw a few 161s today:

    161 SO 16 - Mini Cooper

    161 LM 67 - Mazda 6

161 RN XX- Hyundai i20 - Can see the neighbours new car from house but not full reg.

The brother got a Nissan Juke 161-G reg somewhere in the 200s I think. I've only seen photos so far

Seen a lovely red Ford Fiesta today 161-OY-69. Even took a photo but it did not save in the phone raging. It had the chrome grill, alloys, fogs etc so was high spec.

What about the gap in purchase price in many cases tho.....

Indeed, plus fuel costs aren't as much of an issue as they used to be thanks to low prices, so the payback time for a diesel is longer the cheaper fuel gets.

As a matter of interest, what is behind the upswing in petrol sales? Is it because more and more people are buying smaller cars, which are mostly petrol anyway, or are people buying larger and more expensive cars looking at petrols as well?

161-D-4600, a red Opel Astra SC ready and waiting to be collected at Boland's in Clondalkin. It's only the 8th of January, and the registrations are that high already.

Something very cool about that 5.0 stamped on the side of the Mustang. I was just thinking, is there any cheaper car available, brand new, with a V8? €64k is decent value.

Looks good but €2350 a year tax would wear thin very quickly.

Funny thing is, with a brand new 5.0 Mustang, you could probably wangle yourself out of a stop or a checkpoint for a good 12 months for having no tax. :pac:

"Just picked her up". or "its a show/demo car" or a few other chestnuts.

That unfortunately is the biggest problem with the V8 by a mile. Not on my life would I give the Government that much money a year. The Ecoboost is the only sensible option for Ireland unfortunately. In any sane country the V8 is of course the only one worth having! In the UK the V8 will only be £140 a year to tax if you buy one from April next year (after you pay £2,000 in VED on year one, of course since the first year's VED will continue to be based on CO2 emissions), the same as the Ecoboost.

So far month to date 26% of cars are petrol with 72% diesel. This compares to a petrol/diesel split last year of 23%/75%. So a 3% swing but id expect that to grow as there is probably longer lead times for petrols as manufacturers struggle to plan properly.

just shows how big of a hit petrol cars have taken in the last few years though. They really need to lower the price at the pump and make the tax cheaper to revive the petrol models.

Is it just me or does there seem to be a lot more 161s around than there were 151s? Saw three today alone, Pajero, Prius and a Kia jeep. Saw a focus yesterday too.

    Well,
    Speaking for myself
My last 3 cars would have been a couple of grand more expensive in petrol format with a much lower resale market.

    This one for example

    1.4 TSI ACT BlueMotion Technology 150hp / 110kw 6 speed Manual A4 / € 200 4.9 l/100km 115 g/km
    i
    From € 36,960

    2.0 TDI BlueMotion Technology 150hp / 110kw 6 speed Manual A3 / € 190 4.0 l/100km 106 g/km
    i
    From € 36,575

    almost 400 cheaper for diesel!!!!

The aunt traded in her Mk7 Golf 1.4tsi Highline for a Polo Lounge. Reg is in the 2000s in Cork anyway. Serious spec on it for a small car - nav, cruise, front and rear sensors, reversing camera, air con. Quite nice.

161-C-1791. Myself and wife just picking up her new Focus ST (diesel). Obviously I want her to be the first to drive it but we're still sitting in the forecourt while she's putting photos up on book face. Women and their priorities!!

Didn't see it per se but I did a renewal the other day for a €190,000 V8 Range Rover.

Renewal for comp and insured only driving was €3,800.

Up from €2,500 last year's which was on a 2013 Bentley.

    Not jealous.

    Not jealous at all.

    :pac:

Should have taken a pic but parked up in Macroom earlier and returned to see a 161 Trendline Golf parked on top of my own car, I had to get in the passengers side on my own car as it was seriously tight..

A lot of garages do it. There was a cover over it too. Had the same with mine when I picked it up...I'll admit all that went through my mind was scratches from the cover.

    That Polo was bought outright.

Some people might like it to add the the experience of a new car. Personally I'd just want the keys and to fcuk off out of the dealers.

Did your aunt have another equity to do a direct swap or was the golf still worth more but the dealer wouldn't write a cheque back?
