I've always tended to abhor the concept of hardened release dates: making movies is a stressful enough activity for those involved without the prospect of a release date hanging over everyone. It must be one hell of a cloud to work under, when those dates is too close & the production too complicated/problematic. Plus, it's not like Disney are going to let people forget Star Wars is a thing again :D

For a new Star Wars film, a delay's fine with me. I'd much rather a sequel take its time in production and make sure everything's right, instead of making some manic grind to meet a hasty May 2017 release. Besides, if Disney are lucky, at this rate they could have Christmas all to themselves:

    Xmas 2015: Episode VII
    Xmas 2016: Rogue 1
    Xmas 2017: Episode VIII

If the festive season just gone is anything to go by, nobody's going to release anything against a Star Wars film, bar perhaps Quentin Tarantino ha. Assuming Rogue One doesn't flop or is a critical bomb, VIII is better off being released outside of a hectic summer Blockbuster season. And with enough distance from Rogue One that casual cinema-goers won't feel any immediate burnout from the Star Wars universe.

I don't think they'll have episode VIII cover Kylo's learning. No doubt he will have had his new training and be a tougher opponent to all.

Absolutely no problem with the release date being pushed back. Once they get it done right, that's the main thing.

Anyone think we might get to see Lando in this one? Especially with there being a big scoundrel-shaped hole to fill and all that. Plus Billy Dee Williams is 78 now. Even just to see him in a small role would be great. If they can bring Admiral Ackbar and Nien Nunb back then surely they can bring Lando back!

Avatar 2 has been pulled from Christmas 2017. As successful as the first one was they know they're never gonna catch Star Wars if they open the same time. They've left this franchise go too long off the boil I reckon.

don't think they really need to have a group of the same type of character. Plus, I would think Finn and/or Poe could/will step into such a role.

It'd just be bringing him back for the sake of it.

Well it does beg the question "what happened to Lando?" As he was such a big part of the Rebel Alliance by ROTJ and essentially single handedly blew up Death Star 2.

(By the way, an aside. I was thinking about the Death Star 2 the other day, and why the Empire would create a second one. Thing is, it was probably being built around the same time as the first, if not a little after. Let's look at the timing - the first one was under construction at the end of ROTS; it wasn't fully operational until A New Hope - some 17/18 years later (isn't Luke that age?) So if ROTJ takes place about 3-5 years after ANH, one would assume that Death Star 2 started being built about 10 years before that. Am I right?)

The events of Jedi are 3/4 years after a new hope.

is that canon? cos i heard the lads on jedi council say Jedi takes place 8/9 years after anh and they know their stuff

Star Wars Episode VIII delayed until Christmas 2017.

    http://www.gamespot.com/articles/star-wars-episode-8-delayed/1100-6433994/

A re-write of the script is currently being undertaken by Rian Johnson.

    http://ie.ign.com/articles/2016/01/20/star-wars-rumor-episode-8-shooting-delayed-for-a-script-rewrite

Don't know what to make of that. Could be good to ensure an excellent script is written, but now we have to wait almost two years to see it.
Well, reading those articles, it sounds like the script change and the release date change are separate decisions, both probably initiated by Disney.

I'd be a bit worried about the script fiddling. I can't see a new writer/director, on the eve of shooting, suddenly deciding to reduce the prominence of the new characters he is getting to introduce to the saga on foot of the positive market feedback about the new characters of his predecessor. Sounds like studio interference. del Toro joining von Sydow in the cameo pit?

The script rewrite is apparently only delaying shooting by a month so that doesn't explain the seven month shift in release date. I suspect this is indeed a reaction to the runaway box office success of Ep VII and they just want to repeat the release/marketing formula as closely as possible. Avatar 2's departure from the stage only helps the decision. With five saga and spinoff movies in the pipeline, they really could make Star Wars a temporary Christmas tradition a la the LOTR trilogy.

Without a doubt he would be my number one choice. He has the looks, mannerisms and voice of Harrison Ford, but his acting experience is limited. Then again, you can always train to be an actor, but you can't train to be Harrison Ford. :p

Just think it's a strange move tbh..it'll have to be scanned and printed over for the CGI etc..just a weird way to do it. Ads a ton of work

How do you think they did Force Awakens? Or the majority of visual effect films for the last 30 years?

Eh, FA was shot digitally..not with film.

No, it was shot entirely on 35mm except for one scene which was shot on 70mm. Abrams is firmly in the celluloid camp. As is Rian Johnson.

What scene was it? :o The only one I can think of is the scene where the Falcon leaves the Jakku system and flies off into space...

I thought there was a distinctive grain structure that gave the movie a very filmic look, though they were obviously imitating the OT to a large extent. I didn't notice the IMAX-shot stuff in at all. There was so much digital manipulation of that sequence — with half of it being entirely digital — I'm not sure why Abrams bothered. Ditto his use of it in Star Trek Into Darkness. It seemed to be just an excuse to play with the IMAX cameras.

Which is probably telling of the way the industry is going. I haven't done a count, but it seems like the majority of blockbusters are being shot on film these days. The pressure that existed a few years ago to shoot digital and 3D seems to have vanished, especially now that the studios all have an investment in Kodak. Independent filmmakers obviously have financial reasons for shooting digital, but I really think the celluloid camp has already won the big budget films.

As for the future: digital cameras will get better (higher resolution, better colour, less messing around in post), film will stay the same, 3D and higher frame-rates will dwindle (unless Cameron saves them both - again), multiplex screens will stay the same size and super-sized IMAX theatres will remain a novelty.

Official announcement and video. Looks like the second Skellig Michael shoot from a few months back. If this film literally picks up from where the last one left off it will be the shortest ever narrative gap between episodes to date.

    Plus, Laura Dern???

Unless Rey's training has been going for a few years. What was the gap between 4, 5 & 6? A couple of years between each?

I think there was more of a gap between 4 and 5 than there was between 5 and 6. ROTJ mustbha e picked up fairly quickly from ESB given they went to rescue Han.

Yeah 180 per day. The crew was well below that, though. About 100 I think.

In any case, it proved too restrictive in other ways for them, so the remainder of the island scenes are being shot at Ceann Sibéal and in Pinewood.

Guess the movie takes up straight after the end of TFA.

    Either that or Rey spent a year doing her best Mrs Doyle "g'wan, g'wan, g'wan , g'wan, g'wan, g'wan, g'wan .... TAKE THE BLOODY THING !!!"

There was 3 years between ANH and ESB and a year between that and ROTJ.

Rey: Luke.....I wish to learn the ways of the force.

Luke: But I was going to Tosche station to pick up some power converters! :(

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 7,611 ✭✭✭david75

latest i've read is Snoke and Ren are aware of Reys lineage and either as Lukes daughter or Leia's by one of those 'force' conceptions, Snoke might actually be a version of Plageus and he's been using young gifted Force users, like Rey and Rey, to leech off to keep him alive..as Han&Leia both know as Han says to him.

    or..

Laura Dern has been cast (oh god why..WHHYY??)and she's Rey's mother, either alive and Rey goes with Luke to find her, or dead, and just appears in a flashback.

So Chewie is tweeting screenshots of original script for a few days leading up to a "Big Announcement"...

Could it be his retirement? As we know he was due to return to his role for VIII even in a limited capacity? Having said that, he did say he was very tired during the promotional part.
