That's the obvious way the trailers are making it look. Rian has said that he's made agreements that marketing can't show/spoil certain to many aspects and visuals from the film, so I'd not swallow the path these trailers lead you to hook, line and sinker.

Oh the trailers are 100% misdirect. Especially that latest one showing Rey standing over luke. That’s not going down like that at all not a hope. It’s been mapped out what is happening in that scene and while it is only educated guess work it’s spoilery and people are sensitive to that so let’s not :)

As part of its continuing plan to have Star Wars films being made well past any living person on Earth's lifespan... another trilogy!

The franchise is going to be the most overexposed in the history of cinema before they're done... but at least Rian Johnson is involved in these new ones to guide us towards the point of space operatic saturation. Will be nice that he can start from something hopefully more resembling scratch.

Set speculation to warp factor 9 (whoops, wrong franchise), I'm both simultaneously intrigued yet a bit apprehensive. As Mr Johnny U remarks, the saturation point is there on the horizon, yet Johnson's involvement suggests a creative possibility.

One things for sure, this will not be some midtier, small scale trilogy of character and personality. I'd love something more intimate, but it's unlikely.

Dave, don't conflate hate with caution.

If it makes you feel better David, I'm all for a live action Star Wars TV show, that's a long overdue concept with tonnes of potential.

Please be Old Republic, please be Old Republic.

    Won't be, though.

You didn’t make me feel bad so that’s a pointless condescending post.

Can’t wait for the endless whinging about it here tomorrow and then cut to few years later all these same people addicted to it like game of thrones. Bookmarking this page in any case.

Well you seem keen as mustard to jump on any perceived slight or negativity against star wars, and seemingly unwillong to appreciate that not all us fans are as immediately joyful about another bazillion films. You couldn't wait to slam the posts, so it takes two to tango :)

It's one of the most heavily commercialised pop culture properties on earth, now in the hands of a studio who fully intend taking that commercialisation to the next level. It's forgiveable to be a little cautious ...

I reckon Rian really wanted to do 9 and this was the consolation prize.

Poorly informed endless moaning I have a problem with. Certain Posters here don’t even try get their facts straight before their tirade depending on nonsense clickbait to fuel their meltdowns.

Other than that I’m delighted. New trilogy and a tv series that are both gonna be brilliant will just give them a few more years of whinge to be proven wrong with. No doubt they’ll complain anyways. Ah well.

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Just look at the superhero film genre right now, they all sort of blend into one big montage lacking substance.

Star Wars is special, but churning it out like the cow's milk Disney see it as will only dilute its impact and magic.

The new trilogy has to be The Old Republic. If they make films set between Episode III and IV, they can fúck right off. The Old Republic or go home, I say.

As for the TV Series, meh. Marvel's TV Series' don't grab my attention whatsoever, all pretty bland, so I expect more of the same in Star Wars. Hopefully, they can get someone decent in to make a solid show, but its Disney, so it will be 'safe and lovely'.

All in all, this news is about as surprising as it is inspiring. Milking company announces plans to milk more milk. I put all my hopes (only hope) in a trilogy of The Old Republic. If they do it right, I can start to forgive some of Disney's decisions.

Or the studio is very happy with episode VIII and know a good money maker when they see one.

It's some consolation prize if that was the case. I'd say this is way better option for him than working on VIII. It'll be more interesting now that the overall trilogy will be planned, compared to VII being made and just winging it from there, without an overall game plan for the story and characters.

really? he wanted to do one movie, they didn't want him to, so they gave him three? especially when you consider they are giving him more of an open palette having moved away from the main story, that suggests more trust, not less

i think it far more likely he was down to do 9, they saw what he had done now and decided they needed to give him more scope.

i cannot see how you give someone a trilogy as a consolation.

We don't know that he's doing the whole trilogy. He's doing the first and, like Abrams with 7, creating the characters whose stories will continue into the next two. Awesome if he does direct the whole trilogy, but I doubt it. Johnson is a writer-director and I'm sure has many more original stories in him. He probably doesn't want to spend the next 10 years making Star Wars movies and killing himself trying to meet Disney's release schedule, even if he was keen to do one more.

Even if he only does the first, he is going to create the arc for the following guys, he gets to build the vision. That to me seems like a far bigger venture than continuing what jja started. Still seems like a step up rather than a consolation prize

To write and direct 3 Star Wars films he would be giving up a decade of his life without much time if any to work on any other projects to keep the creative juices flowing.

I really hope it will be the old republic - if they have balls it will be, sadly I think they will pussy out and have some descendent of Skywalker to appeal to the masses.

Or even some stuff set amongst the clone wars - is enough for a trilogy ?

that's a fair point. it would be a major undertaking. jackson did LOTR in a shorter period but he had the story and he shot them together, which may or may no be an option here.

anyway, i think this being announced this close to TLJ coming out is a major vote of confidence, they could easily have waited to see public reaction before deciding

Wonder if he was fleshing out the backstory for 8 and had some cool ideas and they just loved it and said write that story and we’ll do it. It’s gotta be something seriously good if it’s totally seperate to anything we’ve seen before. Presumably no skywalkers but maybe even no jedi/sith element?

Kinda like Tolkien inventing a language and then sketching out a back story for them into completely fleshing out that race and then the entire world they inhabit.

Thinking the series they’ve announced will be the Old Republic. The other two series the working on are monsters inc and high school musical. So you’ve something for the kids something for the teeens and hopefully the Star Wars series will be something for the adults? GOT will be off the screen by then and it would be a perfect opportunity to take its crown with something more adult based and heavy like KOTOR could be? Maybe?
