enjoyed it for the most. old characters very good. 30 mins too long. Disney looking to the future is very evident in the scenes not needed. give it 3rd spot behind vi and v.

I feel sorry for people who can't / don't enjoy that film.

As a stand alone film it could be said that it is great.

    But it is not.

As the second part of a sequel trilogy to a nine part story this is BAD, REALLY, REALLY BAD.

It is bad because of the way it affects the overall story and how it affects the individual character arcs.

Frankly, Rian made a complete balls of it and in no small part due to his attempts to rectify some of the bad decisions made by JJ Abrams.

It is too late now, the damage is done. Star Wars, in terms of a nine part story is irrevocably ruined.

As far as I am concerned I'll stick with the original trilogy and ignore the prequels and now, sadly, the sequels.

The buck must stop with Kathleen Kennedy for hiring JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson.

It is quite clear that Abrams from a storytelling point of view was not up to the task.

Disney should have given Michael Arndt the time he needed to work on the story for The Force Awakens instead of the decision they made in letting Abrams and Kasdan rewrite it.

    Very, very disappointing.

I actually wonder if you have seen the film as your "review" goes against every other review I have read or seen.

... an audacious push through a rambunctious alien casino.

Rian Johnson knows his cinema history:

    Im still undecided on it

Was a decent movie alright, but it seemed that Rian really didnt like the
characters... killing off Snoke , I mean wtf , I thought hed at least get another movie and more mysterious. Also Leia using the force to survive
in space was really horrible. The porgs were just put in for toys etc.
Phasma was underused and killed off??

Luke dying was a bit unfortunate too and RIP Admiral Akbar

And the force sensitive kids at the end was a bit cheesey but will line up for ep 9 I suppose as the new Jedi recruits

Positive note was that Kylo Ren was a lot better than TFA

Other than that I did enjoy the movie

Loads of people disgusted with this film on the fan forums.

    Gwendoline Christie
was interviewed a lot and appeared with the main cast on all the talk shows yet her character that they all rave about is hardly in it AGAIN. C3PO was in it more and we never see Anthony Daniels with the cast during interviews etc
    .

I can certainly see how people would have issues with this movie, personally, as a big SW fan, I enjoyed it thoroughly, certainly more than TFA, but again I see how people may have issues..
But to say it's destroyed Star Wars is a stretch.. a giant stretch!

Carachters are built upon, the story contained within this movie alone should be up there in terms of a rating..

Yes some bits can be a little 'eh' but even in those bits it's far from Prequels?!

As I said earlier(and I'm struggling without touching spoilers here) Abrams and Johnson have made two different movies, sure, but legit think EP9 could be held as one of the best in the series eventually!.

Hm. I would have to say I agree with the poster in many aspects there.

I was aware of the Metacritic score before I saw the movie and I've spent most of the time last night and this morning wondering how this is an "85" (86 now).

For real asking myself "is it something wrong with me".

I thought the humor was WAY too silly for Star Wars. Think Marvel's Thor or Guardians of the Galaxy but with a Star Wars brand coat of paint.

BUT I found GotG and GotG2 to be legitimately funny movies that I enjoyed. A lot of the humor here just didn't "land" for me and seemed to be too much.

There wasn't really a scene with a lot of weight due to the constant comic relief. This movie will likely not age well.

I thought one of the side plots not only took a main character from Ep VII away from the main story for too long but was so horribly jarring that it made the movie somewhat boring and frustrating for a good 30 minutes or so.

It had some of the very best Star Wars moments but also some of the very worst.

I honestly can't understand how this movie is rated and reviewed so highly. It's SO flawed and I think the flaws are so obvious but it's sitting at 86 and that score is dragged down only by three 5/10 reviews.

Oooh the outrage is strong in this one.

So the critics who review well are bought and fan forums are the ones to trust.

Care to share what the actual reasons are that you don't like the film rather than just vague statements.

I won't see the film until Saturday so will reserve judgement till then.

I hope I'm not coming across as being too cynical. I have been a lifelong SW fan, but I can still say some of them weren't great.

I spent a lot of the movie asking if I was being to cynical. Or maybe I'm too old or maybe I wanted a serious movie.

I laughed a lot during Ep 7. Here, I was just cringing in my seat and wondering how others could seriously think it's a top level SW film.

This is marginally better than the prequels for me. Maybe even just as bad as those.

I am honestly in a position of wanting to like it but really kind of hating it and not really understanding why.

To be honest, I feel genuinely baffled by the high review scores.

I can understand why people would be suspicious.

Yeah, this pretty much sums up my feelings too. I've been lurking on this thread for the last year or so and watched the various comings and goings with a mix of excitement and trepidation. I think there's a spine of an awesome Star Wars movie here. And some other stuff...

    Random thoughts on first viewing:
I'm disappointed Snoke was used just as a 2D vehicle for Kylo's story arc, would have liked to see the part developed more.
I liked the BdT 'if Lando had stuck with his deal with the Empire' turn.
I quite liked the Canto Bight twist on the 'hive of scum and villainy' thing, although I felt that whole segment lapsed too much into prequel/Disneyfication territory.
The Leia thing. Did they dodge the emotional punch in the gut at the end that the film was crying out for? Or did I just miss something?
Overall I loved the Rey/Kylo/Luke story but found the Resistance arc a bit muddy and badly paced, I thought Admiral Holdo was wasted.
    Score was fantastic.
The immersion back into the SW galaxy was well handled overall.

Looking forward to seeing it again.

How would you say Snoke, Finn & Captain Phasma are built upon exactly?

And Rey's lineage? Was that satisfying for you?

Don't even get me started on Luke.

Now I know why Hamill said what he said about the direction. Of course Disney shut him up pretty quickly.

Reading some reviews here is quite disconcerting.

Force humour where none is needed is one of the things a absolutely fucking loath about the modern movie.

If it's as bad as some are saying, then it's a given that TLJ will be dud for me.

Really difficult to answer these without touching spoilers(again I'm on my phone and I apologise and I'll go into more detail later.

Finn I actually was quite happy with, some, as I've said is a little eh, but it sets up his position for EP9 pretty well.

    Reys lineage
in short, yes. It was a very nice answer to it. Didn't need to be anymore or less, and it fits in with the overall tone and message of this movie. I can see why people are like *LA LA RAGE LA LA LA* but I thought it was nicely handled, the movie went into how the force isn't just a Jedi thing, so her lineage isn't an issue from within the movie.. no real issues and a nice touch!

    Luke, this one,
this seems to be when reading those 'fan Forums' are most angry with, and yes I was fine with it. I think the main reason People are so pissed is a childhood hero died, and fine I can appreciate that, BUT, it was handled well I felt, he achieved what he needed to do, he passed the mantle to a point, and transitioned to the Force.. no real qualms

Hammill also didn't even say anything bad in the full quote...

    Edited with Spoiler tags!

You seem to be reviewing force awakens here. Not last Jedi?

It’s definitely shocking. Having slept on it it’s definfely way more enjoyable after the second viewing. It will take a serious adjustment period.
I’m not sure a lot of the humour will age well. It was forced almost always.
Wish luke had been way more solemn as a counter point to the humour elsewhere.

The big main thing wrong here is Finn rose on canto bight. Cut that out and you have a pretty amazing Star Wars film. It takes so much away from the whole
And couldn’t be a BIGGER on the nose comment about US policy with weapons sales globally.

There’s a lot in here to love. An awful lot. But you’ll have to sit with it a few times to have it open up to you I think.
When it’s doing Star Wars it’s winning. Big time. When it’s trying to do all the other stuff it’s so totally jarring.

I Think in time Well come to appreciate it. After a serious adjustment period.

Only one question. How the fvck is JJ gonna follow that? It felt final like it had nowhere for our gang to go. Dumb shot of kid aside, that’s trivial for now although felt like JJ. A total scene out of super 8.

Go see it again. I will be. Hope it lands more

Can we get SPOILERS put in the thread title please mods? Hate discussing something and having to use spoiler tags.

    Agree complete with david75 on
Finn and Rose, and the weapons dealers. And the stupid horses. Ugh. Couldn’t get enough of Luke Rey and Kylo though.

A fan edit of this, tightening the film up and lobbing off about 20 mins will make this a better film I think.

After a real crap three hour sleep, I woke to feel worse. I'm seeing the film again tomorrow, I hope I enjoy it more but I've a bad feeling I won't. We'll see.

Forgot to mention in my original post that I hated that
they turned the amazing Skellig Michael final shot in TFA into a joke as soon as they return to that moment. I know Luke is cynical and recluse for his reasons but throwing away the lightsabre and walking off for added humour was a mis-step. I also hated Luke calling it a "laser sword" later in conversation. Feck sake.

And what the f*ck with him milking the alien and drinking like a freak in front of Rey? I want a cut of this movie with this bit and Leia in space removed before I can begin to think about liking the film more.

It near broke me replying to me nephew who texted me before school to ask what I thought of it.

Oh do explain that one...I didn't discuss any plot details.

If you are referring to my mention of Rey's lineage that was already out in the open, Daisy herself said it would be answered in multiple interviews.

That's what I was thinking. Although I haven't seen the film yet.

There's meant to be a fan edit of TFA floating around somewhere as well that takes out all of Finn's "comedy" bullshit.

I'd like to get a hold of that too.

^ this is a very fair point.

Also the movie is out, spoiler tags shouldn't be overly necessary anymore..

Surely thread carefully should be the prevailing thought..
