The whole casino scene shouldnt have been in the movie.

I hate to repeat myself, but I feel this is an unfair criticism and underestimates the very key role that whole subplot plays in the movie. Again, I have no problem with complaints about the execution and suggestions it disrupts the pacing, but any suggestion it is without purpose IMO neglects what it's there for :)
Like many Star Wars films, this film is largely about the idea of legacy and heroes. In fact, it goes considerably further than any of the other films in that respect. It very determinedly deconstructs some of the mythologising of the Jedi, for example, and through Luke's story examines a more complex, dare I even say human side of a character who has, in the story's fiction - and arguably in our own cultural sphere - become a one-dimensional legend.

In the context of the Resistance story, there's little question the narrative is all about their rapidly dwindling numbers, and the need for a spark to ignite enthusiasm again. Luke Skywalker, of course, is one way to do that - but IMO the film is smart enough to dive a bit deeper than that. Finn and Rose are more 'everyday' heroes: the latter in particular a technician swept up in the drama, but even with Finn it's noteworthy that he's the most faceless of grunts turned hero. Through their storyline on the casino planet and the epilogue sequence, Johnson is attempting to more directly reflect the other side of the story - away from the legendary heroes, and more the normal disenfranchised, forgotten folk making a decision to kick some ass. It's all about the little guys.

I mean, there are more purposes to the whole subplot - Finn & Rose's relationship in general serves to reflect some of the themes Sad Professor alluded to in a post above, and in its climax ultimately looks to somewhat challenge our expectations of what traditional Star Wars heroism has been. There's plenty to be said for a film with the space to show another side of the Star Wars galaxy: in the most basic of terms, casino planet adds depth and colour to the universe. And I for one am not complaining about a touch of animal rights & anti-capitalist messaging being included in a Star Wars film.

But purely in terms of the story's overarching narrative... as I said before, Johnson's decision to end with a callback to the slave kids is very obviously not accidental, and I think that's because it sums up some of the key things the writer/director was trying to articulate in his film.

I know it's cheesy as ****, but to sum it up: those kids are the new hope
    :)

Thought Rouge One was weak for the most part but the final act was a lot of fun. Loved TFA but agree it played it fairly safe.

I don't think this movie is as good as TFA on a technical level, but I liked it more, at least I think I did, needs a second watch. It had far more emotional resonance with me, it went beyond just being happy Star Wars was back, which is where a lot of my enjoyment from TFA came from.

You don't have to find an excuse for every off-moment in the movie :p

I can't get my head around this at all. Any time the prequels came up for discussion on here in the run-up to TLJ most people, rightly, dismissed them as the rubbish films they are. Now it's suddenly 'oh actually you know what, they're not so bad after all'. Laughable stuff.

People seem to forgive and forget very easily.

Is it the same people doing that or different people?

Cos that's kind of an important distinction to make.

If John says he hates the prequels on Monday and then Dave says he prefers the prequels on Friday then what's "laughable" about that?

Different people have different opinions about the same thing? Laughable stuff, yeah?

Thoroughly enjoyed it, not quite up there with TESB or Rogue One but a brilliant film. The only exception was
the Leia scene. As others have said surely they could have done some reshoots and just left it at that.

Don’t get the hate for the
    milking scene.
. It’s giving a glimpse into his day to day life and he’ deliberately being crass about it trying to
    force Rey to go away.

My biggest complaint was it not following through on something I personally wanted to see.
They did such a good job building sympathy for Kylo REN before pulling it all away. I would have loved for them to go the opposite way with Rey falling to the dark side and her coming out as the villain.

I said it seconds after the credits rolled. Worst film since phantom menace.

I still think it's better than any of the prequels but doesn't touch the original trilogy or the first two Disney efforts.

It's abysmal but Jesus the phantom menace or the two that came after it were absolute abominations.

Went to see it again and was just as entertained as the first time although I will admit that whole Poe Hux thing at the start was a bit out of place. Whats more of a worry for me is JJ taking the next one, we'll probably end up with a half built starkiller base over a forest moon...

Don’t remember Chewie roasting Ewoks on a fire and eating them on front of their families!

Nah any Porg complaints are fairly unwarranted I'd say. They're just there to be cute, sure, but they don't do anything unbelievable like the Ewoks did.

Just a thought on my part

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big Star Wars fan - I've liked the other movies just fine and found them to be entertaining and enjoyable, and I see the appeal, but I certainly don't have the same love for the franchise that many would.

I've just sat through The Last Jedi however, and have very few positives to say about it - the last 20 minutes or so were somewhat of a saving grace, but the first 2 hours were guilty of being boring, drawn out, and ultimately felt unnecessary. The new characters introduced in The Force Awakens were very enjoyable, but in this outing they felt bland and one note.

Mark Hamill was a delight though - as the actor has gotten older he's become more and more entertaining.

Ah no, I don’t think they are Ewok level characters. I thought they were just a bit of fun and didn’t impact the story that much.

Interesting how many woman are now in the Star Wars universe. It’s like there was a female population bomb with the first order breeding female clones!
