Hi all, I hope someone can give me some advice on the above. I recently completed my msc in computer science. Prior to this I also completed a bsc honours in Applied computing, which I believe is recognised by the teaching council of ireland. I do have previous teaching experience as a contracted trainer, i did this part time/during the summer whilst completing my bsc degree. I also have 2 years part time lecturing at third level. I did this when completing my msc..Some of these hrs was a requirement of my masters degree ..basically, I am kind of lost now as to what direction I should go..do I register with teaching council..would I be qualified to teach in secondary school etc?? Many thanks!

I come from the same background but added a subject to make me employable because having IT as a subject is as useful as an umbrella on a windy day :)

IT is used a filler subject and anyone with an interest in IT will be given IT classes to fill their timetables. There is no IT syllabus / exams so a specific IT teacher is not required.

With relation to adult education, there are no jobs whatsoever due to the public sector embargo - my local VEC had an article in local newspaper where teachers are retiring and not being replaced which is putting pressure on the remaining staff and affects the continuation of courses due to embargo. I have been qualified with a while and never applied for an adult ed role as they were not there.

Teaching Council registration - you will find the information you need here http://www.teachingcouncil.ie/en/Registration/How-do-I-register-/
You won't be able to register until you have a teaching qualification and that will take you two years to complete - which I wouldn't recommend unless you get another subject before then as you will only be registered for IT which I have said is useless.

I hope that answers your questions.

Thank you for your reply! In regards to teaching council registration I was told that I could register as they recognise my degree?? Maybe this is wrong!
You said you did another subject..how would I go about this?

A few years ago you could register with the VEC for adult education but that loop hole closed a few years ago to ensure everyone is a qualified teacher and you can't get paid unless you're registered.

I did an evening degree in a university - you would probably be able to do some maths modules to register for maths.

I couldn't find the file on the Teaching Council website but it's on the PAC website where you would apply for the PME - click your college - find your college and see what you can register to teach. You can find that here: http://www.pac.ie/pmeinfo/recogniseddegrees.php?inst=pe

No way around it, you need a 2 year qualification in teaching. Subject knowledge (your qualifications) is not enough

The only IT exams in Irish second level schools is in the Leaving Cert. Applied where it can be taken as a Vocational Specialism.

You can do a two year part time adult education qualification that would satisfy the Teaching Council. Quite a lot of work available in the FE sector for someone like yourself. You just need teaching council registration to be paid. You could add another subject but IT alone would keep you busy.

I think that's a bit unfair to advise op like that. I don't know what part of the country you're from but there have been no IT vacancies in my area and that is a pretty big ETB. From what I hear, where possible, some teachers jobs are split between second level and PLC centres. There were loads of IT roles with FAS but they require 6 years industrial and 4 years teaching experience which would blow a lot of people out of the water.

I do have JEB Diploma..which I thought was recognised by Fas/Vec?? I used to teach Fas courses but maybe this has changed? You are very lucky..wish I had work..so fed up looking at this stage! I am looking everywhere..but no luck! I thought my two years teaching third level would help me..But it's not that I'm applying and not getting jobs..ther don't seem to be any out there..I was very unlucky a few months back..The job I was doing was advertised..my msc wasn't thru in time. I think if it had I would have got it! Only part time, but I wouldn't have said no!☺

The JEB isn't that relevant - anyone can pick that up. It is accepted by FAS but as I said previously they require lots of experience before even considering you. The only way the ETBs accept this is when the tutor isn't a run of the mill qualification ie hairdressing/bar tending etc. It's hard luck about the job - you'll have to get used to rejection :(

    hi

All of the above posters are correct -

There is v few teaching jobs with IT at the moment in second level and FE.
The exception which was touched on above I think is in the area of Software Development / Mobile Technologies / network tech / Cloud computing. If you have these skills you will get hours and possible contracts in some of the bigger Further Education Colleges or ETB centres. New modules in the area have been written ( see QQI site) at level 5 and level 6 so there is growth in this area.

You do need the FE teaching qualification though - check out site on this. You might be allowed teach while doing this course - you previously experience might give you temporary registration- This would need to be checked out by teaching council.

And as mentioned there is competition with existing teachers who have lost hours and retrain or move into these new areas.

Correct! I know of CFE's that can't get teachers in above areas.
