28pts yesterday in Portumna and 26pts in Moate today. Very inconsistent both rounds. Plenty of pars but lots of double or triple bogeys to go with them in both rounds.

Playing Scotch Foursomes in Moate tomorrow so hopeful of a better outcome!

  • Had 26 points in The Island yesterday.

Was off the back stakes, I haven't played at all this year, and (to the surprise of nobody) my short game let me down badly. But sure just have to keep at it. Hit a 4 iron second shot on the 15th that was about as well as I've ever hit a golf ball, I'm a complete hacker but stuff like that makes you just want to get out and play again.

    Played twice over the weekend.

On Saturday, qualifier for the four all matchplay. Played with my dad, was stableford off the blues, playing off 9/10s of handicap. Top 16 teams qualifying. We had 42 points, to finish with the 2nd best score on the day.

Played well myself, was 36 points off my ball. Hit 60% FIR which is massive for me in recent times. Dovetailed really well, with the highlight being a great birdie from my dad on the 11th.

Great to have a day like that out with my dad.

Having played great Sat, was feeling optimistic for singles from the white on Sunday, but alas wasn't to be. Missed buffer by 2, with 3 3-putts & a couple of misses from very make-able positions.

Was poor off the tee on Sunday which was costly.

A work in progress, but it does feel like progress is being made. The company of scubapro helped improve the day, as always

Played Monday. When I had the driver in my hand I was godlike. When I had any other club in the bag I was someone else entirely. No idea what happened but that's golf :)

    21 points lol :)

    36 pts.

Small cut - wasn't playing great but got up and down 5 times.

Wind was up so suited me.

Lowest ever handicap again. Not playing great - but somehow holding onto my handicap.

Well done fix it was a tough wind to get 36.

After so many games where I was never outside the buffer the last 4 I can't break 30, 4 x .1's has me back over 10. Don't think I am ever going to get to single figures

    33 points in Athlone.

Started great, I was level par for the first 6 holes in the windiest conditions and I had birdie putts on every hole except the first. I birdied the 2nd.

but then things took a turn for the worst. After I ripped a drive down 7, hit a great 5 wood to leave me 75 yards from the flag. It was straight into the wind so I hit my full 50 degree wedge and in flight it looked GORGEOUS. But inexplicably came up short of the green (which was a 65 yard carry). I hit my 50 degree wedge 110 yards....

Things all went down hill from that point onwards with the exception of another birdie on the 9th.

The back 9 was a train wreck.

Standard scratch was 33 points as well, so I am doubly sickened :(

if i had scored 35 points, i would have been back down to 5 :(

    Singles stableford at Laytown/Bettystown

Finished up with 30 pts and while I'd have taken that when I stood on the first tee (after a recent cut), I was a bit gutted.

19 pts after 8 holes - then I N/R'ed 9, and made the mistake of trying to recover all the 'lost' points on 10 and ended up N/R'ing that one.

After that I was chasing my tail trying to put the round back on track and put in another 3 N/Rs on the back nine.

    Lesson learned :o

Yesterday was the end of 6 rounds in 7 days. Headed over to fuerteventura last week and played 5 rounds over there from Thursday to Monday. Beer, Sun and golf make a great combination! So nice to see the ball bouncing down the fairway instead of plugging/stopping instantly..

Played first qualifying round of the season then yesterday afternoon. Had a great round including a first ever: back to back birdies. No scratches and 41 pts, should be down to 16 now.
(My hopes of the win were dashed while walking off the 18th as someone in the group ahead had 43)

Played out of my skin to get 37 pts.

One bad drive cost me a par round.

After a lot of consideration I joined Bellewstown today. Played my first round of 18 holes on a full course in 3/4 years.

It's a nice course. Probably helped by the fact that it was a beautiful day. Perfect for golf.

Played OK. Got a few pars. Hit 4 GIR. Not fully comfortable with my driver so hit 3 wood/4 iron off every long hole.

Had a lot of putts for birdie or par and missed. I got putted once or twice. I need to get used to the speed again. Playing on par 3 greens has ruined that part.

I was lenient enough when taking one or two shots again and have myself a handicap of 18 for stableford. I ended up on 28 points.

Consistency is key and I'm not consistent at the moment. Also, I was thinking too much before shots and they were the ones I missed.

I'm aiming to get a proper GUI handicap before June. At this rate, I'd be happy with 18.

93 strokes off the bck sticks in tramore today my game was awful. Had 3 pars all day rest a mix of bogey or double even triple. Feckin slog I'm going for a nap haha

92 gross, 77 nett in the intermediate scratch cup in Ballykisteen this morning. Started ok with a mix of pars and bogies. 8 over par after 9 holes but a run of doubles on the back 9 was disappointing.

My first strokes comp of the year yesterday and a disappointing 91 gross, 76 nett. A lovely snowman on the 10th didn't help :) Lots of good stuff though so onwards we go!

    Busy day yesterday.

Played 1st round match in Club Matchplay in Moate in the morning and won on 19th vs my opponent who was the leading qualifier and I was giving him 5 shots.

Not quite so fortunate in the afternoon when I lost 6&5 in a Scotch Foursomes match with my teenage son against two good golfers. We had only entered for the craic not expecting to qualify but enjoyed the extra game in it anyway. Will be a good experience for both of us!

72 holes of golf over the weekend!!! Started on Friday and went for a quick nine that turned into 18 :)

Soaked out of it on Saturday playing in a fourball.

Strokes yesterday morning and scored a nett 79! Started well and was 8 over hitting the turn with a 7 on the card. Thought I'd lost a ball and wrecked the card on the second (hadn't played a provo), but my playing partner found it and two shots later I was walking away with a par instead of an N/R.

Stepping up the 15th I was 12 over and staring at reasonable score - but I think by that stage the rounds I'd played the days before and the soaking from the previous day kind of caught up - and I played the last four holes in 11 over, including a 10 on the last!

My dislike of strokeplay was re-affirmed, but on the plus side I think I did well on the front nine - scoring consistently without really feeling like I was playing particularly well.

......then when I was finished I met my cousin and an uncle who were just heading to tee off so I joined them for another round :)

23 points off 17 at the weekend, struck the ball as badly as i ever have.

    4 pars
    5 bogeys
    2 doubles
    7 scratches!!

Been playing great golf lately, delighted with myself and handicap going in right direction

    +8 in muskerry 2 weeks ago, (1 birdie, 10 pars, 5 bogies, 2 doubles)
+9 in birr stroke play last weekend (10 pars, 7 bogies, 1 double)
+7 today in match in Birr (4 birdies, 7 pars, 3 bogies, 4 doubles)

If I could reduce and hopefully eliminate the doubles I should make my goal of single figures easy enough this summer.

Now to get a load of 0.1's after this post cause the Golfing Gods think I'm getting to cockey :p

Shooting better scores doesn't have to equate to reducing bad scores like double bogies, focus on making birdies and pars and the rest will look after itself;), play positively not defensively:pac::pac:

89 gross for 75 nett in Tralee intermediate scratch cup yesterday. 4 treble bogeys cost me as well as playing the par 5's badly on the front 9

Highlights were the grey weather fantastic scenery and s birdie on the 11th!

A case of what might have been on my first visit to the course

33 points off 22 in Balcarrick in my first qualifying event of the year. Hit a lot of poor shots but scrambled really well which I never do, no scratches so definitely something to build on ðŸ‘

My game is in tatters..... So much inconsistency in every area bar my putting. Since moving clubs at beginning of year I don't seem to be able to avoid two or three car wreck holes each round. Two rounds this weekend resulted in a 90 and 89. Just to put it in perspective I had 9 pars earlier today which included 6 in a row and I still finished 16 over in the other 12 holes. Really starting to get frustrated with amount of silly errors that are littering my game. Handicap is suffering with a series of .1's which after today have me out at 12.4 At least the weather was fantastic.

Played my first handicap round yesterday and I was absolutely ****e. 102. Embarrassingly bad. I think I managed to hit one or two drives right all day. Putting was terrible as well. My irons were ok at times but still let me down.

I thought I was going to get a decent score when I started with a bogey and a par. Unfortunately I followed that by losing my drive and then the provisional. Ha.

I would have been better off hitting a 6 iron off every tee and I'm not joking when I say that.

The annoying thing is, my drive on the last hole was text book. The hole is approx. 400 yards long and I landed it at the 150 yard mark, dead centre of the fairway. It pitched down and spun back an inch or two. No forward roll. That was with a Spalding driver. A piece of crap compared to the Titleist driver that my playing partner had. I out drove him by 15-20 yards on the two holes where I connected well - the 9th and the 18th.

I am convinced that I'm good, I just have no consistency at the moment. I also can't tell why I have just hit a drive well or have just hooked it way right (LH) yet again.

Maybe lessons are the key to it all...

    EDIT:

I know that driving is not the be all and end all but when you lose about 6 golf balls and, sometimes, don't even make it to the fairway, then you need to focus more on that issue. All I can do is laugh at how bad I was and hope that I never play like that again.

Dunmurry is a fine course and that.

But you drove past many great courses from Tramore to go there.

1 birdie 4 pars 9 bogies & 4 doubles off the blues at Grange Castle.

Wasn't striking the ball well at all, very poor off the tee, scrambled well though and finished with a decent score for a small cut

Thinking it's time to get a few lessons, short game and putting in decent shape, long game is disarray

Started well but still ended up with a miserable 26pts off 14 in Moate on Sunday. Switched off totally mid round. Must do better!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭TLOA72

27 off 14. After a few weeks of decent if not good golf I have hit a wall. Every part of my game is failing at different times.

Two holes could be good off the tee then it disappears for 4 holes, or it maybe my irons or short game.

Had 25 points with 3 holes to play yesterday , 2 with a shot. Lost ball OOB then provisional lost to snap hook in bush. Bogey the next then another snap hook on last OOB. Finished with 27 points.
On a day with no wind and good greens it was perfect for some semblance of golf but I just don't know what's about to happen when I take the club away.

My best round of the last two years.......

.......except it started on the 10th on Saturday and finished on the 9th on Sunday :pac:

Saturday morning started badly - rushed putts on the first 2 holes (for no reason whatsoever) meant two half-chances for a one-putt became 2 three-putts. Kind of lost interest for the next few holes then decided to focus for the back 9 and use them as practice holes, which worked well and it was reflected in the score - 27 pts, with 19 of them on the back 9.

Sunday started better as I was determined to score better on the first 2, and I did on Sunday what I should've done on Saturday - leaving me 3 points better off than I was after the same 2 holes the day before. Was pretty consistent for the rest of the front nine and banked another 19 points.

On to the back 9 and while I didn't implode, there were some wobbles, combined with a trip to fairway bunker (which I'd never managed to hit off the back tees before, so I'll take it as a 'positive') and changed pin positions that made it not as productive as the day before - final tally was 34 points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Out for a practice round this evening in Corballis - played well enough.

Ground hard - but too much growth on greens and aprons - 3 pts down for the 13 - played a little better than that, made a few daft club choices , strange for me there. Couldn't get pace of the too slow green.

Bloke I was playing with had a hole in 1 at 4 - nice to see. I knew I would see one there at some stage as have seen nearly 20 very close ones.

A class place to practice your links golf.

But the grass so long around greens - almost parkland like.

A great compliment to say too much growth.

Hitting the ball well - a consistent strong draw I would call it and hook is another name for it.

Played in the open competition in Athlone yesterday evening with new Athlone member - Boards.ie's own Slave1, my dad and another member.

Had a very enjoyable evening, even if on the whole, my golf did not match up to it. Got off to a very bad start with 3 1 points in the first 4 holes, but a chip in on the 5th for birdie steadied the ship for me and I was able to reach the turn in 17 points. I then shot 1 under gross for the first 8 holes on the back 9 which included back to back birdies on 12 and 13 but unfortunately finished with a double bogey on the last for a score 37 points.

Still, first time to better my handicap this year. Unfortunately the course we were playing was the Lough Ree Challenge course (yellow markers), which is a shorter course than the traditional and standard scratch was also 37 points..... so no cut :(

Haven't posted much here, played luttellstown twice in last 2 weeks. Had 35 points off 4 ,came 2nd on countback last Monday, had 34 yesterday and won on countback. Course is in fantastic condition and greens are best I've seen them. Scary if your above the hole. Just shows you don't need 45 points to win open singles like alot of courses

37 points today playing in New Forest playing off 6 ( 35 points off my society handicap of 4). Really happy with how I played. Anytime you beat your handicap in new forest you're doing well!

    1 birdie
    11 pars
    6 bogeys

Just really consistent golf. Drove it really well which I was most happy with and got a couple of nice bounces here and there. Scrambled very well. Missed a couple of putts but doesnt everyone. The birdie was for a 2 and a few pound as well so result.

    FIR : 10/14
    GIR : 8/18

    Serious scrambling, lol

Came second in the society comp. My society handicap will be cut, but again, I'll be saved on my real one. I'll submit the score, but my handicap secretary will only laugh at me ;)

  • Net 75 in the medal in The Island today, off 14. I don't know what they're doing with the greens but some seemed freshly cut and others didn't, so you'd variable speeds from hole to hole, add to my total lack of touch and confidence on the greens and my putting was just a nightmare. My long game is in reasonable shape, was happy enough there, have a few things to work on but overall fine. I'm really disappointed anyway, feel like I left so many shots behind.

Monthly medal today. 84 gross 17 handicap 67 net.

    1 birdie
    6 pars
    9 bogies
    2 doubles

The first double was down to a snap hook off the tee. It was only a couple of inches out of bounds, but out nonetheless. Second ball par to keep it respectable.

The second double was bad course management pure and simple. Nailed my drive to the wrong side of the fairway but was blocked out. Rather than laying up, I tried to go for it and paid the price.

Still should be good enough for a good cut :)

Scramble on Saturday and monthly medal yesterday.

Was quite happy with both. Scored a net 75 in the medal which was reasonable enough given I finished with a 9 on 18 - for the first time ever I managed to plonk one in the water hazard on that hole; not a first to write home about!

Scoring aside, I was satisfied with my overall game - 9 of 15 fairways hit and 8 greens in regulation. What really let me down was my putting - too many 3-putts which I could blame on the recently pole-forked greens but given that 67 won it and the lowest gross was 68, that wasn't a problem that affected everyone!

38 points (off 20) in club w/end comp. Putter was super, recent change to a new putter and starting to pay off, even sunk a 40 footer!!!
    First cut of 2016.

    1 birdie
    5 pars
    7 bogeys
    3 doubles
1 triple & 1 Quad (Still wrecking a few holes with poor shot selection)

Driving was terrible though (2/14 fairways), so I know what to work on in the range this evening.

38 points (off 18) in Fota (Deerpark course) yesterday with the work society. First outing in about 9 months so was very happy with that. 16 on the front and 22 on the back. Enjoyable outing despite the hail shower in the middle of it. Course was in great condition.

What a difference a day makes! Following on from the boards outing; I headed to Citywest for our monthly medal yesterday full of confidence! That confidence went pretty early with a 6 on the 3rd (par 3) followed by an 8 on the 4th (par 4).
    2/12 FIR, 7/18 GIR with 5 3 putts. Gross 88 for net 72. Was +9 on the 6 par 3's

I checked back on New Forest and I hit 8/14 FIR, 10/18 GIR, 31 Putts with 0 3 Putts.

It's not even the end of May and I've already hit (and beaten by a long way) all my goals/targets for the year :D My target was to get to 14 and, while I'm not there yet, I'm thinking of pushing that down to single figures - if I can play to it once I can do it again.. right?

Now I just have to figure out why I can play 'new to me' courses so well, but can't replicate on my home course. I suspect that because I know the course well enough now, I'm trying to get into the best position instead of the safest position and there is probably a fear of some holes which I've played badly a number of times before (gets into your head?). Probably going off topic for a 'how did you score' thread...

    Frustrating round over the weekend.

36 points off 7, 18pts for both nines.

I need to sort out my driving, it's costing me about 3 shots a round at the moment.

Had six 1 point holes in total, no scratches though.

    FIR 6/15
    GIR 6/18
    30 putts (no 3 putts)

    3 birdies
    5 pars
    10 bogeys

Looking at the stats again I scored quite well considering.

23 points off 13 around Cahir yesterday. 8 out 15 in 6 blobs. Couldn't hit it out of my way. 7 .1s on the trot standing over a ball haven't a clue what's gonna happen. I know it's a trough just posting this so I can remind myself to enjoy it more when the game is on song.

While you're right it's probably a trough, the best way to overcome it and get on the upward curve is to play your way out of it, and in that regard, it sounds like you are focused on the action of hitting the ball, try turning your attention/focus on the target, become target focused and that should help!!;)

played with a fella who was effin and blindin and like a bear when he his bad shots/holes yet thought everything was great craic when he had a good hole.

After a run of 4 rounds with 21 on the front and less than 15 on the back, managed to string a solid round of 78 today at Portmarnock Links for 39.

Was just enough to get me to 9.1, so off single figures at last.

About time. Class stuff. Best non single figures player I ever played with. Made no sense your handicap.

What was biggest change J you made.

I'd say you will be 7 soon
