Of which only 3 could vote, Ukraine, Lithiuania and Belarus.

This block voting is brought up every year but it's not always true.

Send a good act and song then you'll do well.

Look at how Sweden won it.

It doesn'ty need to have an exact land border to bias the voting...just be in the general vicinity...
Sweden gets plenty of block votes too in Scandinavia. We haven't a prayer in comparison.

The only reason Nicky did it was to promote his new album, it is the first single off of it, looks like that will backfire as well.

I honestly believe both Nicky and RTE thought Ireland were a shoe-in for the final, simply because he used to be in Westlife.

Sure, he's past it, the song was average and the act was forgettable.

I saw Georgia, they had a band as well but at least were visually interesting.

I'd put good money on RTE sending Bonnie Ryan over next year.

    No, really.

    Send over Mary Black's kids

Sing a dance version of Grace

It's a piss take lads. Block voting is a joke.

    That old chesnut?

Christ, none of the "bloc" countries have won for years

But it is very natural for countries near to each other to like similar music - Ireland / UK is a classic example.

Irish entry was sh1te. 250/1 in betting. Radio stations didn't play it cos no-one requested it.

What we need to do is to showcase IRISH music - a modern take on our traditional heritage. Something like the High Kings or similar.

Then, no matter what, we can hold our heads high.

But middle of the road sugary pop music - forget it.

Didnt think he would win on Saturday but he definatly deserved to go through tonight. Instead of Latvia,Bulgaria,Ukraine or Belgium.

Tried that a few years ago with Dervish and it was a disaster.

It just needs to be a good song, simple as that.

RTE execs: Byrne has failed us. Now we've nowhere left to turn, but to you. Will you take on this assignment for us next year? Will you save us in our hour of need?

Well that was a flawed plan. Westlife certainly didn't register here in Spain anyway. And weren't they bigger in Japan & eslewhere outside Europe?

Yes, but the lighting and camerawork were really basic and there were no special effects.....many of the acts made full use of the floor lighting and synchronised it with the song but it's clear RTE couldn't be bothered.

Housemate is playing the Bulgarian song (again!) in the background and it's amazing how well this gif syncs up with it! :p

Got 8 out 10 predicted correctly; had guessed Belarus and Norway instead of Georgia and Lithuania. Absolutely fúcking THRILLED Georgia got through! :D Lithuania's a surprise one but he sang well live I guess.

Georgia, Bulgaria and Australia were the standouts tonight for me. Was a little disappointed with Norway; I do like the song but it just felt like it was missing something live. Of the countries that missed out, I thought Belarus and Macedonia gave the best performances, so I feel a little bad for them.

As for Ireland, well I can't say I'm too surprised. Nicky Byrne actually sounded better live than I thought he would but the song and performance just didn't stand out enough.

I really liked the song and I was surprised I did because I usually hate Ireland's entry and Nicky Byrne. Obviously Ireland aren't going to win the thing, but not even qualifying this time is pretty daft.

How many notes would we have to pony up to get auto qualification every year, €20mill or am I even close?

Well the Czech entry was co-written by an Irishman and got through. Maybe if RTE had allowed songwriters to earn an opportunity instead of giving the job to one of their own boys we'd have had a better chance.

The usual lines are being trotted out on Social Media of "Block voting" and that it is a rubbish competition. We were 600/1 to win for a reason. We had a mediocre song. The Eurovision is a fantastic competition with some fantastic songs over the last few years. If you want to win the Eurovision, you need a great song.

That's not really RTE. They would appoint a choreagrapher. Lights are no expense as the Swedes provide that.

No point in blaming RTE for everything.
It all comes down to the song not lights.

Georgia gave half the viewers an epileptic fit but still got through.

There is no bloc voting in the semis as not all countries can vote.

    Look at these winners

    2015 Sweden
    2014 Austria
    2013 Denmark
    2012 Sweden
    2011 Azerbaijan
    2010 Germany

5 of the last 6 winners for 'Old Eurovision' countries. How did they win?

Not as simple as that. It's obvious that many countries spent more money on their stage show than Ireland, whether ballads or uptempos. The Lithuanian guy for example seemed to have an extravagant light show and LED floor and wall, not just the basic lighting SVT would have been offering.
