Stevie Wonder wouldn't describe Sanchez as the best player in the league.

In fairness to Stevie Wonder, he's seen more incidents involving Arsenal players than Arsene Wenger over the years.

Not a winner, but popped into my head when people were adding up the last minute goals.

Skrtel against Arsenal in the 97th minute to draw level at 2-2.

    That was fun.

Suarez in the 96th against Chelsea to go along with that one so, right after biting Ivanovic :P

Same with the Kuyt penalty. Love Kenny's reaction to Wenger being Wenger.

Was he not on his way down already though by the time his heel brushed Delaney's knee?

I really think it was a dive. But look, players do it all the time.

    No, he was not.

Glad he scored and I hope he increases his value for the club before the end of the season, but he scared the bejaysus out of me with that stunted run-up boll1x. For me that's a 50:50 peno, goalie guesses right and he reaches it easily.

I really miss the way Gerrard would just storm up to ball and blast it into one corner or the other. Before he took it you knew he was going to score unless the goalie made an absolutely astonishing save.

The whole point of the stutter penalty is that you try to make the goalie move one side before you hit it and you slot it in the other side. Not 50/50 at all. On the occasions where the goalie doesn't move early, like Caballero against Coutinho last sunday, then maybe it is 50/50 but that is a small portion of the time tbh.

    On Benteke...

(and ignoring the debate about the penalty because it doesn't matter what sort of consensus we reach - it happened)

His league goals have now earned us 9 points this season.

One each against Bournemouth (1-0), Southampton (1-1), Leicester (1-0), Sunderland (1-0) and Palace (2-1).

Turned 1 point into 3 on 4 occasions, and 0 into 1 once. He also scored in the 3-1 win over Chelsea and the 3-1 defeat to United, as well as the winner against Bordeaux in the Europa.

I just thought it was an interesting spin for a player who has justifiably been criticised as the wrong instrument, ineffective, lacking effort, etc this season.

Naturally, we will feel we should have gotten more from a player who cost so much and wasn't settling into a new league, but there certainly are some positives to his time here.

It's never as simple as this - but without those 9 points, Liverpool would have the same number of points as Bournemouth...

But Firmino is a flop & Sanchez is the best player in the PL:rolleyes:

Just another example of how unreliable stats can be in an argument. Sanchez is obviously the better player.

Firmino is not on fire at all.
He has good stats but not setting the pitch alight.

Isn't that a good thing though? The idea that he's getting a lot of goals and assists with still the potential to do a lot more on the pitch is really encouraging. He's really kicked on as a player in 2016. I'm delighted for him.

Anyone with eyes who has been watching the actual games, not the highlights of games, can see that Firmino has not been amazing for us. Just like people always go over the top with criticising players saying they are absolute rubbish, alot of people go over the top praising players. I have high hopes for Firmino but realistically he doesn't influence a game anywhere near enough at the moment but he is certainly coming along nicely in his first season.

Absolutely amazed/amused by the huge controversy surrounding yesterday's pen. Last minute, all Delaney needs to do is to shepherd Benteke out and the game's done and dusted. He doesn't, there's contact and Beneteke goes down. Penalty.
There are a few scores being settled today. That John Cross though. Utter pillock*.

    FT Boro 2 - 3 Liverpool Ojo '33 '52 '87 (peno)

Great game, very open full of attacking intent from both sides. The good news for Liverpool was that both goals conceded goals were "outliers" - Ward with a rare error and a peno that was softer than Bentekes. In open play it was good stuff really, Ojo had the Boro right back on toast for 80 odd minutes until he moved to the right side where he was just as effective - his close control is lovely to watch. Sinclair worked much harder than someone who is agitating to leave. In the engine room Chirivella and O'Hanlon were both excellent - no fuss they just got on with interceptions, recycling
and passing forward. Both the full backs did well getting forwards while the centre backs were solid when called upon.

Very happy with Firmino........he has shown that he possesses real quality, even when things aren't going well for him you can see he's trying creative things......he goes missing in games a bit too often but if he can keep improving he may prove a bargain....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,746 ✭✭✭BullBlackNova

I get the criticism about Firmino - he does disappear sometimes - but what do people expect really?

He is still new in the country. Despite this being a transitional season where we have had two managers, he has had a pile of different positions and tactical set-ups, he has still been pretty effective. 7 goals and 4 assists since Christmas shows a real upturn in his form too which is definitely encouraging.

I mean, what more do people want from him this season? Sure, Sanchez and Di Maria hit the ground running, but one has faded this season, the other did after just a few months. Plus they both arrived with bigger reputations, transfer fees and more experience...

I'll put it this way, I'm much happier with Firmino (despite a handful of issues) than I am with Coutinho and Lallana. Or Milner. Or Henderson.

Would like to see Ojo get more game time or at least a few spots on the bench.......any reason why he's not getting more of a look in? Done well for the very limited time he was given.....and done well in his loan spells by all accounts too...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,648 ✭✭✭mav79

I think we will have to get used to inconsistent performances from Firmino until we improve our CM's. For 60 minutes against Palace we completely bypassed himself and Lallana by hitting it long to Origi. This happens whenever we play against teams that harry and press us.

    Did anyone else see this?

It gave me a smile on a dreary Monday. The fúcking state of this lot.
During the Premier League game on Sunday 6th March 2016 between Crystal Palace and Liverpool in the 94th minute Liverpool player Christian Benteke DIVED to con the refereeing officials to award Liverpool with a penalty which subsequently won them the game.

According to the football association or "FA" diving or "simulation" is against the rules.

We, fans of Crystal Palace, demand that the FA look into this decision and if found that Christian Benteke did simulate contact he should be banned for a number of games and Liverpool Football Club "LFC" to be fined 6 points at a minimum.

We understand that the result of the game cannot be changed but the FA need to come down on this sort of behaviour.

Even when he was annoying the piss out of me, I thought it was plain as day that playing him wide the way Rodgers did was pure square-peg/round-hole stuff. He and Benteke just didn't work together at all, but it's hard to know who or what is going to work with Benteke at this stage. When they were both on the pitch at the same time, it was largely a mess, with Coutinho and Lallana crowding the 10 space, and Benteke at 9, there was pretty much nowhere on the pitch for Firmino to be at all effective.

I didn't think his heart was at all in it when he was played wide, though. I know players have their favoured position, but there seems to be an increasing unwillingness of late to do the job one is given, rather than the one a player would prefer.

Ah yeah, don't go in for these comparisons much myself either.

Firmino has 8 goals and 4 assists in 2016, more than any other player in total. Those stats stand by themselves and don't need any comparing mickey size stuff.

My first proper memory of Liverpool was 84 against Roma. The Merseyside derby Cup Finals the fondest around that time. 89 was a cracking match.

Payet drifts in and out of games, so does Mahrez, wouldn't worry about it too much. Firmino puts in a shift off the ball when we think he has gone missing.

What I reaallly love about Firmino though, is how aware he always is. Every time an opposition player takes a bad touch, or makes a bad pass, he's the one that latches onto it and instantly drives forward, punishing teams. He's done it a bunch of times already this season, crafting chances from mistakes as far away as the halfway line.

It was shocking stuff by the keeper on Sunday, but the ball was still smashed at Firmino from a close distance. A lot of players would have had an awkward touch or just got something on it because they weren't expecting it, but immediately, from his first touch he was driving at goal. Can't underestimate that kind of awareness in key moments.

Yep, at least 2 goals have come from nothing after he blocked a routine clearance from a defender. 1 was Lallana against Sunderland, can't remember the other one.

Firmino is a very good player. Anyone calling him a flop is clueless. Though the first I've really heard about him being a flop is that post above comparing him to Sanchez.

Fwiw I'd have him closer to Sanchez than Coutinho is to Ozil.

Atmosphere in Anfield, and the PL as a whole, gets brought up a lot. Lyon moved to a new stadium in January, and are undefeated in 6 games (5 wins, 1 draw).

Absolutely incredible atmosphere generated in every game there. Would love to see the likes of that back in England. Here's hoping the new stand can help produce a similar boost.

Sample vid of it against PSG last week:
