Not sure getting the bullet at Madrid tarnishes anyone reputation. They sack everyone.

Newcastle are not really in a position where they could expect to attract someone better than Benitez I imagine. Obviously the big challenge is having 10 games to keep a side in free fall up.

I have to be carefull about what I say regarding Ashley having been banned for slagging him before but he must have made plenty of assurances to Rafa for him to even consider the role. Newcastle is a basket case. Terrible move for him but he will certainly add to the excitement of the league, its never been better.

I think some of it may be the rest of the team improving and giving him options of where to put the ball rather than all of it being Lallana improving.

I still have the match thread to read, should have caught up by our next game:)

If Rafa keeps Newcastle up and with his habit of winning trophies he could be seen as a God there if he even wins the League cup I would Imagine.

personally I thought it was actually very interesting and a good analysis of whats going on. laughing at their situation isn't smart, especially if they start outbidding us in the summer on much needed players. A bit of realism is needed because once they find their direction they could become just as big as they were before, especially with someone like Mourinho in charge.
Theres already City & Chelsea with corrupt billionaires bankrolling them. Spurs are proving this season that they are more than ready to step up. Arsenal are Arsenal. West Ham are going to get bigger and bigger and Man Utd, well, they are "the biggest club in the world" so yeah, perspective people

Good to see Skrtel come through 60 minutes.

Poor Caulker, totally forgot we signed him to be honest! With Sakho, Lovren, Toure, and Skrtel all back healthy, he likely won't be in the senior squad again.

Not really, got subbed with Ojo overshadowing him. He is so good with the ball at his feet - unlike Ibe who just runs into someone.

In and out, has a good turn of speed nearly forced a couple of good chances but as above Ojo really the star turn when opening his legs. He forces anyone defending to make a challenge and so picks up free kicks in dangerous places and they get the yellow cards.

If I were deciding between the three which to "fast track" right now it would be Ojo. His all round game is superior
to either of the other two esp Ibe who is one dimensional.

Glad to see Klopp picked Ojo for the bench yesterday, because on current form he is ahead of Ibe. Where Ibe is all power and pace, Ojo just looks so comfortable with the ball at his feet, always in control no matter how fast he is running with the ball.

Feel bad for Ibe actually - he looks utterly bereft of confidence. I hope we're patient with him because there's talent there but he seems mentally brittle as much as anything.

Ibe is a one trick pony and that trick seems to be running into defenders. Can't see him making it at Liverpool either.

I thought Ibe had stepped up when Klopp initially came in but he has regressed since then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,041 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

To be fair to Ibe though, he's only just turned 20. Had he followed the normal trajectory and was only starting to break through now, we'd be filled with excitement about him. Familiarity kind of breeds an expectation of being the finished product, but he's actually still well ahead of the curve for his age.

Best way to go I think is just letting him go on loan next season to play week in week out in the Championship, make his mistakes away from the spotlight and learn from them.

He stepped it up in Asia, but like that bygone "champion of pre-season" Voronin, he fell away badly when he should have been producing.. He has had plenty of chances but doesn't have that inner belief or ability to mix up his game effectively. He's not the required standard for starting 11, he might still come good tho.

in recent weeks Lovren has been one of our best players, delighted that he seems to have turned it around. It'll be interesting to see if Skrtel gets back in the team, and if he does how that affects Lovren or Sakho.

I've been a critic of Allen as well over the last few years. He has tended to be anonymous, weak and poor far more often than he has been effective, and pretty injury prone as well, but the last few months (while still injury prone) has been very good when played, and last night was excellent when he came on. Lallana and Henderson were very good last night as well, and it was Henderson's best game of the season easily in my opinion. Firmino was my stand out last night though. Always chasing, always available, always looking to move forward while still tracking back.

Oof, just saw the incident - yeah, that'll be an interesting one. Couldn't be more perfect - last minutes, player barely impeded and flings himself to the ground. Life is great for throwing up the auld narrative points every now and again!

Reading in the FA cup. Won 2-0, but the first was a pen in the 87th minute. Then followed up with the second a few minutes later, when Reading had fallen apart.

Yeah, i'm the same regarding Allen. I'd imagine he'll leave in the summer for more game time, but i'd love him to stay on as a squad player.

    True.

Still, when you hear that we are interested in Ben Chilwell, and I can only imagine what cost that would entail, it makes me wonder about alternatives such as Willems.

I usually would be very against buying from the PL because we've got stung in the past but one player I've watched a bit this season and would be a massive upgrade is Aaron Creswell from West Ham. He's got a serious left peg and cross of the ball. He's good going forward and more importantly, solid defensively. Arguably the best left back in the league at the minute and by far the best English left back.

    And he's scouse..

Yeah, i think Cresswell is a very good left back, i wouldn't mind us signing him. He only signed a new contract in the summer though.

I hope we park off skrtel in the summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,588 ✭✭✭daithijjj

I suppose Matip will replace Toure in terms of numbers so we'd have to buy another CB in order to sell Skrtel. Personally, would like to see us go for Van Dyke.

Re Joe Allen, i think if everyone was honest we could 'upgrade' on him fairly easily imho. If i was forced to pick a name, any name, a name we could possibly get, would be Cabaye. He is old school, things i like about him, takes set pieces (last night when i saw Moreno go from left back to right wing to stick in a free kick it dawned on me, why the fk is this a thing with us?). He is also a snidey little bar steward, dirty but not too obvious with the filthy part of the game. I hate him, but i also admire that he gets away with it. We are too soft, we need a level of game intelligence. Alternatively you go for someone in the mould of Kante, a not unsatisfactory option yet very different to Cabaye.

Benteke is surely gone if Klopp can attract someone he wants. Ings is more his 'bag' for a type of player.

Moreno is....ehmm...... cerebrally insufficient. I'd be astounded if we didnt buy a left back as a matter of urgency.

Mingolet has played a lot of games for the club now. I see him as nothing more than the white David James. Capable of pulling off world class individual saves yet also capable of the worst howlers at any given time. I think its a basic lack of concentration with him. Gives nobody confidence around him imo. Has to be replaced.

We've moved on from the Gerrard era when Allen was a square peg in a round hole at Liverpool. He couldn't match up to the specialist roles required for the midfield. Lucas was a better anchor man, Gerrard was a better quarter back/creative player, Henderson was better at breaking forward and supporting the forwards. Allen always seemed to panic when he was faced with the prospect of having to shoot, he didn't properly fit.

Last season was a complete fiasco, Rodgers was filling the team with midfielders, leaving forwards out of the squad and playing a winger up front as a lone forward. After the Man Utd game where the team just seemed to not show up, Allen was asked by a fan what went wrong. His response was "Maybe Man Utd prepared for the game, because we did not." That was the most honest assessment of a performance by a Liverpool player last season.

He has been a different player since Klopp was appointed. He benefits from playing in a team with a game plan, if he's given a role he'll do his best to play it. There's no doubting that he is a tidy player, my issue with him has been his availability.

There may have been some bad blood at the club over the way Rodgers demanded the player be signed which is why his contract has not been extended, but if Klopp wants to keep him he will be offered a new contract. I think Allen will want assurances about playing time before committing to a new contract and that could be a stumbling block. At the likes of Swansea he would be a guaranteed starter every game, he'll need to decide where his ambitions lie.

Completely agree, he has all the physical abilities to be very good. He just needs to understand when and where to make runs and stop trying to do it all himself and use his teammates. As has been said, at the moment he is a one trick pony, and against other u21's you can get away with that but once you make the jump to first team you get found out pretty fast.

'ing hell. Hadn't seen that quote before. Chimes with the impression that I've had for a while now, thinking back, which was that Rodgers seemed to be having a year long, slow motion, nervous breakdown. I was in denial about it at the time, though.

The actual quote is ‘They were ready to go and maybe we weren’t,’ and looking at the article seems to point more at not being mentally ready for a derby game.
Still doesn't reflect well on Rodgers, but not as haphazard preparation as suggested above.
