My wife and I were only noodling away, going through the chords for the Spiders From Mars songs last night. Very sad.

Can't quite believe it what an absolutely unique artist, we will never see the like of him again. RIP

Didn't even know he had cancer...

I assume noone did apart from close friends and family

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

My heart genuinely sank when I scrolled into this news just now. Listened to this man as an awkward, lonely teen trying to figure everything out.

So sad. Only last night I was driving two of my girls home listening to Tom Dunne interviewing Gerry Leonard and we were singing along to "Ashes to Ashes". Loved this guy as long as I can remember.

I'm not usually shocked by celebrity deaths , but this has genuinely stunned me this morning. As a small child in the 70s his music and image stood out to me, and are some of my earliest memories. RIP David Bowie.

Feels weird. Definitely feels like the passing of one of the last old school icons, and Bowie was iconic in the truest sense of the word. It's a bit mad to think of how influential he is, how many artists owe him something, and how legendary he became in his own lifetime. Many artists have to be six feet under before reaching his level.

Listening to his new album i can't help but laugh a bit. He was an artist to the end, almost like he said "ok i'm dying how can i make this into art". Not sure i can put it into words but i don't have to just listen to the album

Bowie presented a two hour radio show on the BBC in 1979, and it's flipping great

Hello This is David Bowie. It's a bit grey out today but I've got some Perrier water, and a bunch of records... erm, I think if I was walking outside at the moment I would like to be walking on this street... it's 'Love Street' by 'The Doors'

The most unique voice, from one of the most unique and original artists ever, gone, but will never ever be forgotten.
Farewell Thin White Duke, safe travels. R.I.P.

    Very sad to see this.
I remember he was due to headline Oxegen many years ago. I didn't know his music and was much more into other bands at the time who have since vanished.
One of my mates was mad into him. He didn't bother with the current music and was made into Bowie, Joy division, talking heads etc. He was gutted when Bowie pulled out for health reasons. I was indifferent at the time, but over the years I really wish I could have seen him live.
In college I really started to appreciate him, and 5 years was always my favorite. I thought "Where are we now" was a great single and had the new album on last night.
It seems stupid now but I was really hoping he'd tour again and I'd get to see him live.

    "Kooks"

    [CHORUS (x2)]
Will you stay in our Lovers' Story
If you stay you won't be sorry
    'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow so take a chance
    With a couple of Kooks
    Hung up on romancing

We bought a lot of things
to keep you warm and dry
And a funny old crib on which the paint won't dry
I bought you a pair of shoes
    A trumpet you can blow
    And a book of rules
On what to say to people
    when they pick on you
'Cause if you stay with us you're gonna be pretty Kookie too

    [CHORUS]

And if you ever have to go to school
    Remember how they messed up
    this old fool
Don't pick fights with the bullies
    or the cads
'Cause I'm not much cop at punching other people's Dads
And if the homework brings you down
Then we'll throw it on the fire
    And take the car downtown

loved the chorus - cheered me up as a kid at school thinking if only...

    Ah ****e. RIP David.

My wife and I had our first dance at our wedding to his version of 'Wild is the wind'

The wedding band had never heard the song before and the singer called me before the wedding and said' you bastard, you couldn't have picked a harder song to do justice to'

They did a decent job though

We'll miss knowing that Bowie is around

An absolute giant of rock music for the best part of fifty years, and has left a legacy that will be rich and vibrant for decades to come.

Watch out for 'Bowie at the Beeb', which is bound to get a showing on BBC Four in the coming days. It shows an hour or so of his works - across the years - which illustrates the genius of the man.

    Rest In Peace.

Icon and Legend gets chucked around a bit often, not in this case, add a musical genius, and your getting close to describing Bowies influence on the music industry. RIP Sir, you might have had your last dance, but you will be a hero, for more than one day.
As his good friend Freddie sang 'only the good die young', RIP.

Re united now. Will be a party in the sky tonight.

I was only about 18 or 19 when I started listening to his music but very quickly he became my favourite artist. He had such a treasure trove of work to dig into and find something to like, he touched on so many different styles and did so many so well.

I highly doubt there will ever be another like him, a true music legend.

    RIP.

He is the only celebrity whose death I knew would affect me significantly, and it has. It's like a family member or friend has died.

I've been a fan for 30 years, have nearly all his albums and saw him live several times, the first being Slane in 1987.

Thanks for everything David and RIP.

    Gutted to hear this morning.

What a performer and he was a genius no question

Bowie turned down the part of Max Zorin in A View To A Kill.

Imagine the White Duke with his scary eyes and his shark like smile as a Bond villain?

He went on to play the ultimate baddy Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ.

A unique musical behemoth, really won't see the likes of him ever again. Was watching clips of him in his movies only a few days ago, too.

Heroes was one of the earliest songs I remember standing out to me growing up and what got me onto his music.

    What a life he had.

Reading the posts in the Unpopular Opinions thread about Bowie yesterday and thought "Now lads, there's unpopular opinions, and then there's just talking shìte!!"... :pac:

Sad waking up to this on BBC news this morning, I was always a fan of Bowie, unique in every sense of the word, "The man who fell to earth" being one of my favorite films, and any time I'm asked my favorite song of all time, it's always been this one -

    Sad to hear.

On top of his great music, he was brilliant as Nikola Tesla in The Prestige, which is one of my favourite films.

Bloody hell, I really wasn't expecting this. :( One of the true greats of music, as if that even needs to be said. He sustained innovation throughout his career which almost none can manage. The vast majority have shot their creative bolt by the age of 30(hell the Beatles couldn't avoid that) . After that it's cabaret. Bowie kept going, kept innovating and kept being relevant for new generations. There are only a handful of musicians, songwriters and singers that have changed the musical and cultural landscape forever and Mr Bowie was among them. RIP.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Tony Visconti

"He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life - a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry."
