Can I have a bit of feedback of the charging of people going into Hennessys bar on Saturday night. Some charged €5 and a lot of young people charged €10 .The price of drinks inside were €1.00 or 60c more than normal.

All late bars charge in, they are like nightclubs now and have to pay for their bar exemptions. They may have started charging €10 after a certain time. Used to happen all the time when I lived in Dublin. I used to pay in to the Abbey when they were open late. What drinks were more expensive? The minimum pricing law may have had an affect on that and they probably have to charge more for spirits/wine etc.

Were you forced by the owners of Hennessy’s bar to enter the property and part with your cash?

Is this the start of recovery so by ripping people off before going inside the door of a tralee pub and I quote a pub .This is Tralee ciarrai not Dublin temple bar.The drink was a draught cider well over charged.

No but a lot of bother to a lot of tralee people this morning

But its not a new thing, late bars always charge in, as I said above! And I didn't go out in temple bar in Dublin! But as I said, there is a new minimum pricing law in since the 4th of January so that's probably the reason for the price increase...

I dont know what the big deal is about bars overcharging ,they are at it since the year dot .I can remember paying 4/5 old pounds to get into a disco 30 years ago and been overcharged for cats piss or what ever they call it now

It was a fiver to get into banna 30 years ago and it was kip. Publicans are greedy any way ,always have been but he is the only one open late , he could charge 15 euro and he would still get people in

I though minimum pricing was only applicable to supermarkets and off licenses? The VFI were pushing hard for it last year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,069 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

My cynicism tells me that it wasn't the Government's concern for our health that made them introduce minimum pricing, but the constant moaning and lobbying by the VFI, because the last thing that they ever wanted was any competition for their members. It shouldn't have any effect on pub prices, unless of course they think they can get away with increasing prices because the competition's been neutralised.

What little sympathy I had for the pubs evaporated very quickly when they reopened last year. After spending months crying about house parties, the (alleged) behavior of some of the pubs was nothing short of disgraceful.

Very sad to hear that Bruce Kelliher passed away. If anyone was a fan of basketball in the 90's when Tralee Tigers used to play, he was one of their star players and he was also big into skateboarding. His brother has the surf shop in the Abbey carpark. He was Only in his late 40's, and passed away suddenly from what I heard. Awful news, he was a lovely guy. RIP Bruce. :(

The home of the Rose of Tralee is been moved to the Meadowlands Hotel from the rose Hotel this year.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 9,367 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ciarrai76

That's a bit of a surprise, seeing as the Rose Hotel has the grounds beside it to put the dome up. As was asked, where will the dome go? it won't make sense to have them so far apart. Meadowlands doesn't seem an obvious choice for this partnership. Although I do know that the escorts usually stayed there.

I thought I heard they were in talks with mtu in Dromtacker

Yeah Rose selection in the kerry sports academy in dromthacker and I assume rose ball also, with all vips in meadowlands, actual rose festival in town centre as normal.

The 2 things becoming more and more separated, the rose selection side becoming something that could be in rte studio donnybrook, festival needs a reboot with new thinking and people involved

I thought this was a great idea, could be used for various events throughout the year.

I'm guessing it's purely down to costs. Dome was a massive waste of money.

I find it really strange that The Meadowlands is the new venue considering the festival connection that The Rose Hotel has.

  • Registered Users Posts: 586 ✭✭✭g1983d

I'd just worry about the lifespan of such a facility, it's an easy out if nit deemed successful, deflate it and sell it wheras with a permanent facility they have to make it work

  • Registered Users Posts: 586 ✭✭✭g1983d

100% down to costs but don't agree it was a massive waste of money.

The dome has huge capacity which needed to be utilised properly.

How many fewer people will be able to attend the rose Ball this year, at €150 a head thats a lot of money.

The dome could generate a lot of revenue

It seems like they are really scaling back the festival. The sports hall in the college doesn't seem like the nicest place to have the Rose ball or the live selection. And as was said, it will be a lot less people at the ball, which had been quite popular even at €150 a ticket! It all seems a bit strange.

Sounds like they've had to cut their cloth to measure.

Would be interesting to see what condition the business is in.

It was bought for a pound or a euro years ago, may be in the same position now

    Hi,

Where would it be possible to get booster COVID vaccine in Tralee on a Saturday? (No other day suits unfortunately)

Is it a case of ringing around still or can I walk into a pharmacy and get it?

    Thanks!

Falling out seems to be a thing in these parts, with all manner of groups and committees, leading to a lot of back-stabbing. The grapevine might let us know one day 😀

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 9,367 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ciarrai76

You would need to ring around as they tend to only do them on set days. I know Mounthawk pharmacy were doing them on Friday mornings, but I don't know if that's still the case. Check the HSE too for any walk in clinics, they were doing them this week.

O'Gara mentioned on Radio Kerry this morning that they are finalising a new sponsor, which they hope to announce soon! Nothing finalised with the MTU, but they are in talks to hold the rose selection etc there.
