I know there was discussion on this, maybe it was on Killarney Thread, but the closing date for the submissions on the future of the railway network is Jan 18th.

The submission form is in the Appendix of the document called '2016 Railway Review Consultation- National Transport Authority'.

Saw a bit about this in the papers this week

Plans to bring state of the art film studios to Kerry are hoping to get off the ground this year.
Kerry Film Studios – The Production Village plans to be an €18 million full service international film studio facility with three multipurpose sound stages.
The ambitious plan will include a sixty unit creative industries hub, workshops, post production suites, screening room, bar and restaurant.
It is understood that Kerry Film Studios – The Production Village has identified former manufacturing units in Clash Industrial Estate as a suitable location.
Daragh O’Malley , Director of Kerry Film Studios which is based in the Tom Crean Centre in the Kerry Technology Park says The Production Village will be home to an array of creative industries and media entrepreneurs; and service providers.
An initial meeting with Kerry County Council before Christmas will be followed by a further meeting this month to continue exploratory talks.
Consultants on the development include John Gleeson, Global Media Leader of Grant Thornton Accountants, Screen Yorkshire who have established a thriving film industry there and Ken Fitzgerald, of Malachy Walsh Engineering:

Presumably fairly similar to what they've done in the old Dell plant in Limerick with Troy Studios. Would be very good to see a development like this succeed in Kerry.

It would also be nice to see one the empty factories facing onto the road at Clash modernised/occupied. They are a bit of an eyesore.

Limerick is an hour up the road.

Be interesting to see what happens,I had heard a rumour last year that Boyles were going moving in the old Goblin site and were going building a bigger hardware store there a bit like the shop in Killorglin

I drove by Clash about a year ago and seeing all the weeds growing out of the abandoned carparks of all the derelict buildings reminded me of that Life After People documentary. If traditional manufacturing industry is no longer an option for Tralee, then all those buildings should be demolished and either expand the Technology park or IT into that area or rezone some of it for much needed affordable residential usage (it is still within relative walking distance of the town centre).

You could create a whole new residential zone for the Town right there without having to expand out into the commuter zone.

Anyone heard anything since about Seancara? Passed by both of them today and they were both locked up.

It's gone, the 2 shops were being run independently of each other and neither has survived

Blast! I loved their savoury slices, I used to buy a few when in town and freeze them, very tasty. I need the recipe :)

I guess Horans 2 shops put a lot of pressure on them, along with Holland and Barrett..

There is supposed to be someone taking over Seancara & reopening under a new name. No sign of it happening yet, although shop is still full of stock.

My experience of Seancara over the years was that the staff were really very poor. If you were grumpy with no personality or any customer service focus, you could get a job there. I find Horan's far superior. Haven't gone into Seancara in a long time.

That's a bit unfair to say! I Never had that experience, nor have I ever heard that from anyone! I always found the staff lovely, in particular one lady who was super at her job and really knew her stuff. Its sad for the staff who have potentially lost their jobs. Especially at this time of year.

Hope he's caught . Locked up and the key thrown away . Having lost a school friend to a drunk driver I have absolutely no time for their excuses. Thankfully he hit a wall and not some poor soul .

Why because I might actually punish those who offend rather than give them a free holiday for a few months ..

Mayor Calls For Traffic Lights At ‘Most Dangerous Junction In Town

THERE won’t be any traffic lights in the near future at what the Mayor of Tralee described as “the most dangerous junction in Tralee at the moment”.

Mayor Terry O’Brien had a motion before the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council meeting this morning that the Council would review the traffic situation at the Cross between the Lower Field and James’ Street and said traffic lights have to be an option as it has become a very busy junction

Council Management’s reply was that Tralee Transportation Strategy highlighted 16 junctions in the town of Tralee that were deemed to require short or medium term interventions. To date, no funding has been provided for any of these junctions.

The “Low Field” junction was not highlighted as a junction requiring attention. This junction is busy only at peak hours and unlikely to warrant traffic lights.

The cost estimate would be in the region of €70,000 and if funding became available, there are other junctions included in the study which have been highlighted by the elected members in the past two years as more urgent.

Cllr O’Brien said the money would have to be found as it was the most dangerous junction in town at the moment.

“Something has to be done, whether it’s a roundabout…put a lollipop man there! It’s crazy,” he said.

Cllr O’Brien said it was also a favoured spot for people on driving lessons and motorists were also using Rae Street from Strand Street to come on to the Basin Road and the situation was dangerous especially at rush hour times.

A roundabout definitely wouldn't be an option there imo. Look at the one a couple of hundred yards up the road from it, less said about that the better.

Surely if this junction "is busy only at peak hours" then a set of traffic lights which stay green for traffic on Basin Rd. at all times except for when there is a car approaching from the Low Field/James' Street? I'm no traffic management engineer, but then again neither is anyone in KCC it seems..

    Oakpark/Brewery is way worse IMO.

So sad to see Seancara go..a lovely family and a local business for many years in this town. But on the brightside you can never have enough Phone shops, tanning booths, nailbars, Phone shops, Barbers, tanning booths, Gyms and Phone shops

€780k paid out in compensation claims against Kerry County Council

Documents under the Freedom of Information reveal just over €780,000 was paid out in 30 public liability claims against Kerry County Council in an 18-month period to the end of June last.

Personal injury claims for trips and falls in Tralee and other centres have reportedly rocketed since January 2014, a senior council engineer in charge of a specialised unit to tackle claims said.

The exact payout was €780,985. However, a further 149 claims lodged in the same period are outstanding against Kerry County Council. No determination has been made in relation to a settlement or even a dismissal.

The vast majority of civil actions involved trips and fall injuries and most relate to the county town. Up to 20 claims have been lodged since June last.

The FOI documents reveal, in total, some 45 solicitors are involved in the handling of the 149 claims with four solicitors handling a number of claims.

The top main solicitors involved in the claims against the local authority include Tralee solicitor Pa Daly, a county councillor. He is representing clients on 23 of the claims; Pat Mann, also Tralee-based, is handling 23 claims while Killarney solicitor Padraig J O’Connell is dealing with 11 claims and Lees Solicitors, based in Listowel are also handling 11 claims.

Smaller numbers of claims are being handled by 20 practices with Cashell Solicitors involved with six claims, and Thomas J O’Halloran solicitors in five and Charles J O’Connor and Co. handling five claims also.

Engineer Vincent Foley, who heads up the council’s dedicated claims unit, said claims against the council have spiked since 2014.

The council adopts a “very aggressive attitude” and is one of only a number of local authorities to have a dedicated insurance claims unit, Mr Foley said.

“The council’s aggressive approach to claims includes keeping a close eye on footpaths that are the locus of likely claims, and having them repaired continually.”

Meanwhile, at several council meetings, concerns had been raised about some locations being the focal points for a number of civil claims.

There are issues with this type of traffic signal set-up in terms of (not) being triggered by cyclists. But the fundamental issue here is that the cost would be prohibitive, especially with several much most important junctions urgently awaiting funding.

My personal preference for this junction would be a four-way stop - something that's still a bit of a rarity in this country.

BTW, blaming the engineers is a bit silly when they can't do much without allocated funding.

My engineers comment was made slightly tongue in cheek, but at the same time I can't help but point out that mini-roundabout just down the road from this junction. Imo it's a design disaster, not big enough for anything larger than a medium sized car to turn around it.

Also the pedestrian crossings are too close to the roundabout, some people are in such a hurry to get off it that they don't have time to stop for pedestrians. (I realise this is an issue with roundabouts in general in this country)

€33 million spent on Kerry's roads last year, hopefully they can allocate a bit more for these junction upgrades in 2017.

Those mini-roundabouts are designed so that anything that can't drive around them can simply drive over them. I agree with you on the pedestrian crossings but with roundabouts it's a no-win situation - put them too far away and pedestrians just ignore them so you have to erect masses of unsightly railing. That's why there's now a general movement away from urban roundabouts and why several around the town are earmarked to be replaced by traffic signals - when the funding becomes available.

Quick query. Have to pass 4 or 5 hours in Tralee tomorrow morning (without a car) and wondered if anyone had a suggestion for somewhere to go/something to do. The obvious ones of coffee shop, library(?) have already been suggested by my nearest and dearest - one even suggested Mass :) - but maybe I'm missing something blindingly obvious! TIA

Have you ever been in the museum? Worth checking it out!

If you're an outdoorsy person, and if the weather isn't too bad, you could take a walk out to the Wetlands, out by the Aqua Dome.

Actually haven't been there myself (need to go soon), but others on here might be able to tell you what its like..

Other than that, there might be something on the cinema or as Ciarrai has suggested the museum is always worth a visit

I second that. The Roger Casement exhibition is running until the end of March and well worth catching before it's gone.

I need to take my own advice & visit the museum myself. I don't think I've been in far too many years!
