Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think it would be more useful to simply report a thread if you're concerned about it.

OP, perhaps you'd provide a little more detail behind your enquiry for people to go on. Most regular users of this forum would be strong advocates of applying particularly high standards and best practice to the whole process of dog breeding, so you may be prepared for some potentially tough questions!

To all: please remember the stipulation for the use of this forum that all posters must post in a respectful manner, whether you agree with other posters or not.

Do not reply to this post on-thread.
    Thanks,
    DBB

If it's done right then no, there is no money to be made.

Absolutely not! Taking care of dogs well costs a lot of money

Of course there's money to be made, and that goes for all breeders whether puppy farmers or so called responsible ones and every thing in between.

There might not be a lot of money however.

You breed your dog, here's SOME of the things you have to take into account, sure others will add more

Vet check, hip score etc for bitch
    Preparing area for pups
    Vet fee's for pups
any other medical bills that may arise (cesarian)
    food for pups
    specialist food for mother
finding decent homes, would you be willing to take a pup back after 6months if not working out?
What if you can't sell them all?
Risks to your dog during birth
Time (up all night for days helping the mother if needed)

After all that, what if you only end up with 2 pups?

How much did you make from your last litter? Assuming your speaking out of experience that is ..

You should get into dog breeding for the love of the breed, not for money.

Not to mention chipping (every single puppy), vaccinating, worming.

The answer is No unless you are going to go down the road of getting a licence but with whats coming out lately about puppy farms thats not the most attractive line of business.

As another user posted the list of expenses is endless - plus its much cheaper to adopt from a shelter or take a pound dog :)

Many people are adapting to my favourite practice ADOPT don't SHOP.

To be fair and add balance.. doing your research and buying a healthy pup of sound temperament from a reputable breeder will not make a huge difference to the numbers of dogs in pounds and shelters. Dogs that are bought and recused in haste are more likely to affect them when the novelty wears off.

If done right there is no money to be made, included in the above costs are Stud frees which can be huge, I use outside dogs or dogs not even resident in the country. Kennel Prefix, IKC registrations, endorsements on the pedigree, stationary supplies for pedigrees, care sheets, puppy packs, extra heating, bin charges, whelping box, scans, whelping kit, huge feed costs.

What I do get from breeding however is hopefully a high quality puppy to keep for myself & very happy new families for the remainder of the litter. I keep in touch with these families & love hearing puppy updates. I am very fussy about picking these new owners. In one of my breeds sometimes we only get a couple of puppies!

    €100k

Of course theres money to be made, otherwise people wouldn't breed dogs. When was the last time you gave €100 to a total stranger? I don't think many breeders do that either.

Do you have any idea of the cost of raising a litter?

Yes I do actually. That is beside the point, people don't work for nothing and especially don't give money away to strangers. So there has to be money in breeding otherwise, apart from a few hardcore dog lovers, no one would do it.

I breed when I want to keep a puppy, otherwise no way would I put myself through all the worry, dirty work & long hours that is involved in puppy rearing in your house. There can also be a lot of heartbreak.

From my calculations, having around three pure bread birches around the farm would produce handsome returns if they produced between 4-5 pups each. The only question remains is what breed to use.

Okay op... I may be acting a tad prematurely here, but it looks to me that you're looking for a row now, as this is a very provocative post... But you know that.
If you want to get into breeding livestock, perhaps try the farming forum.
