Insurance - open claims

    Hi Everyone,

Is it possible to change insurers with open claims? I understand many insurers will not accept someone with open claims but a recent renewal quote for a friend is astronomical to the point where all options have to be considered. They cannot be closed before a 6 month window, so options are even further limited.

Would appreciate brokers or companies that do accept open claims.

    Cheers!

You have to stay with current insurer until claim is settled, no other insurer will take you on.

Understood, but is this legislated or just an insurer business practice?

    Its insurer practice.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense as the claim will be settled through the insurer at the time of the accident not the new insurer. The only stumbling block is the bonus, is it lost or not, aside from that though it's a bit of a silly rule IMO. Especially when it comes to drivers that have many years experience but just got unlucky on one occasion.

Insurer business practice, too much risk for them taking you on when case not settled.

Thanks Business Cat. Very much the case here. The quote is astronomical, we're talking €4k+

I know someone who has open claim and his current insurer quoted them 7500!!!!
There are some insurers which will get on with open claim, just google open claim car insurance Ireland, few of the first brokers should sort you out, mind you it will be less than 4k but still not cheap.
