Hey guys, I've come into an 80L aquarium that has everything but a filter.

So I'm just looking for some suggestions for a new filter (where to buy/what make etc.) and maybe some ideas for what to stock the tank with (I've kept a tank before so I'm not a complete novice :P)

Feel free to hit me with any cool ideas for the tank, thanks a mil :)

I'd recommend the Eheim pickup range as your best bang for buck and they're on the quieter end of filters imo.

Will you need a heater to allow you keep tropicals too? Luckily they're quite cheap, you should be able to pick one up for about €15/16 to fit your tank.

Avoid goldfish obviously as the tank is too small for them. As to what to stock it with? Go have a look at the stock in Seahorse / Newlands and see what you like, google them in the store to see if your tank is suitable though as I've heard lots of ****ty advice from even aquatics specialists who should know better (there's one of the girls in Seahorse is particularly bad for advice if you're not buying something exotic enough to hold her interest in my experience at least).

Thanks for the reply - I should've mentioned there was a working heater in the tank so that's sorted; So I'll just be needing a filter (I'll have a look at the eheims, or would 2nd hand filters be worth a look?)

With regards to stocking I'm thinking plenty of plants and maybe only one (eg. betta) or several fish or a crustacean of some kind.
What kind of substrate would you recommend?

Have you ever kept fish before? Starting off is the most difficult part as you'll need to cycle the tank!

I've had a tropical tank before yeah so I'm aware of the nitrogen cycle and all that...I've been out of the game for a while though! :P

I've both bought and sold second hand filters on Adverts with no problems before.

I can get a new eheim pickup rated for 60 - 160L for just over 30 quid on amazon...is that a reasonable price?

If you showed us a stocking list, we should be able to help you out. Also, what is the PH of your water, sometimes certain fish need low or high PH and will not accept anything else.
