    Things I have always carried:-

Hi Viz vest ( in France you HAVE to have one I believe )
    Torch
Wheel Brace , the ones supplied with the car are usually totally useless.
    Jump Leads.
    First Aid Kit.

I would say bulbs , but has anyone actually tried changing most bulbs on modern cars , on one of mine to replace one of the headlights you have to remove the washer bottle , the other one you have to remove the battery , and you need special tools. ( one of my bugbears , it can't be rocket science to make the bulbs easy to change )

Took. a car needing a new bulb to the main dealer and they had no idea how to change it .. hummed and hawed and then said they would need to take the back bumper off etc. At least two hours work they said...at which point i "remembered" a prior appointment, went to a small garage where they changed the bulb in three minutes..

For all the people carrying fire extinguishers. Do you know how to use it correctly for a vehicle fire? You can make matters worse if you don't.

In what way? I've used one before, noticed a car burning late at night as I was driving past, it had only just started so my timing was near perfect. One extinguisher wasn't enough to fully douse the flames, but another passerby was able to get a second from his house which did the job until the fire service arrived.

I should add, since then I now have two extinguishers in my car - I replaced the one I used the following day, and then a few days later the car owner dropped in another. They really don't last very long. Other items in my car are first-aid kit, high-vis vest, warning triangle, jump leads, bungee cords, duct tape, cheap multi-tool, torch, de-icer, ice-scraper, sponge, spare batteries for torch and car key, and pens. The only thing I haven't used yet is the multitool, as I usually have a leatherman on my belt anyway.

Oh, I also have the all important rules-of-the-road too, so I can pull it out after a crash to wave at the other person because, you know, I'm bound to have been in the right!

Don't open the bonnet, just use through the catch or grill, opening the bonnet gives loads of nice O2 to the fire which is never a good idea. That's also why your supposed to close doors when exiting a building fire and never go back in.

Kitchen sink is only item missing from some you lol, no wonder loads of people drive vans privately.

I'd say phone to call break down service, a camera to to pics or film the fecker who crashed in to you and maybe kitchen sink to throw said person driving away :pac:

Camera was actually main thing a company asked me never to forget once upon a time.

Ambulance to change a spare tyre? :D

Actually how many on here can very comfortably change the wheel in their car? I suppose being the motors forum it'd be a high percentage.

I have experience of calling the emergency services and they can take a long time to get to you if you are remote. Up to two hours.

    Spare wheel
    Triangle
    Jack
First aid etc that came with the car.

    Added
    Road map
    Torch
High Vis fleece jacket from Lidl
    Latex gloves
€50 taped to the top of the glove box for emergencies

Although I did sell my last car and forgot the €50, will probably get scrapped with it still there

Some of this could be down to the type of driving that people do, if you mainly drive in cities or on motorway and N roads mainly during the day it may be that you don't find the need for items such as have been listed.

True. I'm rarely more than a mile away from any kind of garage, plus access to work, home, relatives etc.

Don't carry anything extra other than a brilliant torch, gloves and a wheel brace.

Ah, that goes without saying, I thought you were suggesting something mad like the extinguisher blowing flames somewhere worse or something.

Regarding the people who reckon there's no point having a first-aid kit without training, I do have training and have a first aid kit in my car. However, there's only really enough in it to deal properly with one major trauma. If you end up in a collision you mightn't be the one using a first-aid kit, but you might be the one treated with it. I came across an incident before while on my bike so I had little more than a single dressing and a few plasters, luckily there weren't any major injuries, but if there were I would have relied on one of the cars having a first-aid kit.

    A decent wheelbrace.

For bludgeoning the bastard of a tyrefitter that put on the studs too tight and you can't get them loosened when it's pishing the rain on a cold dark winter's night.

Got caught out with that one.

An extendable wheel brace. 15 quid in halfords.

I know how to change a wheel etc but now cannot physically do so. So, being a little old lady I rely on the chivalry of the younger generation and so far never been let down... Had a dramatic blow out two weeks ago and no problem getting help. That was my first puncture in 18 months.

I've two more things to add to the list, a can of deicer and an ice scraper. Everyone at work got one of each yesterday. It's something small, but a nice touch.

I can, but never bother anymore. There is no need for me to do this when you call someone else to do it for you especially in the cold weather. no thanks

Another thing to note is the type of vehicle, we've a seven seater MPV with loads of storage compartments so not a single item is lying around cluttering up the car.

I would ask if you are single before helping to change a wheel!

there's a big difference between not being able to change an wheel and not bothering to do it your self

I think most of these items are essential. and will be adding some to my inventory.

if you drive in towns or cities all the time then its not as important. I live in the country not remote like Connemara or Kerry so I probably will use most of these items at some point .

i cant see how anybody outside of a city could say that they don't need a hi vis . i wouldn't like to walk 100 yard on a country road without one. its bad enough with it

i have often been at places like the park and someone has needed a plaster etc and i have given them one.
