On a more serious note, bit of a downer hearing about this - great actor, even when he was in some utter cheese!

(FFS .. Boards and its bloody errors these days! Trying again)

    RIP Mr Rickman

A class act and fantastic actor who helped define a genre in Die Hard and set the standard for villains in the same movie, but also great in a spoof like Galaxy Quest

Genuinely saddened by this news today. My deepest sympathy to his family

    That's a shame.

    Brilliant in Robin Hood.

To the 2 comely maidens in a fight scene.

You, in my room in 20.

    Such a voice.

He did the voice for the introduction of instruments on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells II.

Also I always remember his line from "Quigley Down Under"
Some men are born in the wrong century. I think I was born on the wrong continent. Oh, by the way, you're fired

I am not allowed discuss …

bollocks, bollocks anyway. now that's three decent human beings gone, that i admired within in the last month.
with his wonderfully mellifluous voice he could be reading from a phone book and it would still sound interesting. you know the measure of an actor when by virtue of their presence they elevate a crappy film to something better.

Saw him on telly a few months ago. Seemed a genuinely nice person. Incidentally, he seemed to have an affinity with Irish theater and actors working with them regularly.

He had an Irish connection. His Grandmother was from Waterford. His Grandad was in the British Army based here. They married in Waterford in 1909.

So gutted- the first film I remember seeing in the cinema is Robin Hood aged 4.

Have since them become massive fan, through Harry Potter, Michael Collins, Love Actually etc.

Such a fine actor, and by all accounts a very nice person.

I knew him best as deValera in Michael Collins, I suppose the user Kev and his comrades will take offence to that too, anyone who posts a comment other than "RIP" is somehow disrespectful in their eyes.

Read about his passing from the Guardian website at lunchtime today. Really horrific news.

I know him best from his roles as Snape in Harry Potter, DeValera in Michael Collins & Harry in Love Actually.

RIP Alan. You're were a supremely good actor. You will be greatly missed. :(

Great performance alright, but a pretty crap portrayal of Dev. Even Rickman thought so

He wasn't a big fan of how that movie was made at all

Daniel Radcliffe's words on the legend are really moving and heartfelt (can't link as on phone) but he says how caring and wonderful a person he was. It really makes you regret not knowing him personally.

I was genuinely devastated when I was told he had died. I absolutely loved Alan Rickman. He was the perfect Snape.

    "Always".

    RIP

    Just saw this on FB

"Alan was my friend and so this is hard to write because I have just kissed him goodbye. What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humour, intelligence, wisdom, and kindness. His capacity to fell you with a look or lift you with a word. The intransigence which made him the great artist he was — his ineffable and cynical wit, the clarity with which he saw most things, including me, and the fact that he never spared me the view. I learned a lot from him.

He was the finest of actors and directors. I couldn’t wait to see what he was going to do with his face next. I consider myself hugely privileged to have worked with him so many times and to have been directed by him.

He was the ultimate ally. In life, art and politics. I trusted him absolutely.

He was, above all things, a rare and unique human being and we shall not see his like again" - Emma Thompson on the death of Alan Rickman

    RIP Dev

The tributes from those who knew him are really moving. He seems to have been a wonderful human being and the exact opposite of the characters he is best known for playing in the movies. I thought his elegant menace in Die Hard was utterly brilliant. That moment when the safe opens and Rickman says with disdain dripping from every syllable

You asked for a miracle. I give you the
    F
    B
    I.

And only he could have given us Snape.
    I'm saddened by his passing.
