Has anybody any thought on how to approach the cultural context of this?
Any insights? For LC English honours

Not an English teacher but maybe you could check out Roger Ebert's commentary on the film.

It's a film with huge significance for film-making (the story telling, lighting, special effects etc. were all revolutionary at the time and had a huge influence over the way cinema developed as an art-form throughout the 20th century).

The film also has a strong political message (inspired by the life of William Randolph Hearst) and a moving story.

As above. Very much a film about how materialism can dwarf the soul.

The original working title was "The American" which would point to it being a sincere stab at the American dream.

Kane was only every happy as a child with his sleigh. Wealth and power only served to distance him from his friends and lovers. He died alone in a big empty house surrounded by a load of crap.

    There's plenty of runway there.
