OK, so about 4 or 5 years I got a Toshiba Canvio portable ext. HD. I got it for Xmas, worked fine. Went to the States a few months later, worked there but when I brought it home again, it hasn't worked since.

My sister suggested the airport scanners might have damaged it (I had it in my hand luggage). That time I had a Dell (Windows laptop).
I've tried it intermittently over the last few years and it still won't work. It won't work in my MacPro either. WHen I plug it in, the blue light lights up but it doesn't seem to register on either laptop.

I should have brought it back years ago and I know there's no point in crying over spilled milk, but can anyone offer any insight into this? I do have photos on it that I can't remember if I backed up elsewhere so I would like to get those off.

In Windows, does it appear in the Device Manager / Disk Management?

Nope it doesn't. The blue light goes off when I plug it into Windows, but yet it stays on when plugged into the Mac :/

Airport scanners use XRays, no effect on a magnetic platter.

Chances are its physical damage or just maybe static discharge in your bag. Depending on the drive it may just have come loose from the control board within the enclosure. Some are standard SATA and really easy to swap, some are soldered down and a bit more of a pain.

At 4-5yrs I'm not sure exactly what drive you have but the above suggests its a non standard interface making a repair/recovery a lot more difficult.

the electrical wiring voltage in the usa ,is different to eu,, ireland 220 v.
my advice take out the hardrive,
the pcb part in the enclosure could be damaged or connections are loose,
    power data to hard loose,

put drive in new caddy ,if drive is 3.5inch,
it,ll need a powered caddy unit ,30- 35 euro in maplins ,pc world.

if drive is 2.5inch sata a non powered caddy 14 euro might work ok.
any pc shop in moore st,or maplins sell them .

open case, could be the data ,or powered cables to the drive or enclosure pcb board is loose or unplugged .
two thin cable s, black ,red , sata , data , power ,1/4 inch wide approx.

if drive is 500gig its worth buying a caddy.
    or just plug into pc,

use 2 cables sata , data/power from pc dvd drive
use data ,power from a pc dvdrom drive .
switch off pc, switch off esb/power to pc Too .
    connect 2 cable,s , switch on pc.

the enclosure pc board could be damaged ,
hd drive should be ok ,
