Sorry to bother you lads, you got some things on here, but would like to hear your opinion.

Got offered audi a4 07 130miles infamous 2.0 to swap. Clutch and flywheel done last year and will come with timing belt changed before swap.

I know those are cars to drive, but 2.0 little bit putting me off. I would much prefer the older 1.9. I am kind of unsure if I can afford those expensive audi bills of major things goes on them with 2.0. I am really spoiled by scoobies reliability.

Weren't they the cars affected by the expensive oil pump / balance shaft issue. You should look it up here there has been thread. I know you can do preventative maintenance on them to solve the issue but I don't know much more other than that. I like that model a4 put unless you had some money put aside for potential issues I don't think I'd bother swapping. But then in saying all that what 2007 car are you going to get that never needs anything spent on it, it's a 9 year old car at the end of the day.

That's the exact issues I am worried about. Its a major flow in design. That's why i would prefer 1.9. I know, I don't mind spending running costs and few things that pop up, but that oil and balance shift issues is something that will be very expensive.
I am kind of settled on next car to be a4 1.9, 320d e46 or skoda Octavia. That 2.0 is a gamble.

Well if you want an a4 anyway then maybe it's worth getting a mechanic to look over that one and see if it was a clean example maybe it's worth a chance. You have to remember that 2007 onwards bxe 1.9tdi engines are not without their issues either in terms of throwing conrods causing the engine to be written off. Plus the 2.0tdi would be nicer to driver obviously with the extra power. What does it cost if the oil pump goes wrong 1-2k euro is the figure I seem to have in my head.

After some Google work it looks like it's a massive issue. 1-2k will set you back if you will do conversion kit before it goes.
In reality if it goes, it takes whole engine with it, which is then costs as much as getting another a4.
A4 would be on the last spot from all 3.

Does anyone here have/use a drone at all (you know the flying thingies with the cameras?).

I'm keen to pick one up, and started a thread on the Gadgets forum, but figured i'd chance my arm and see if anyone here has one and could give an opinion of it. I need something to take aerial photos with.

We fly a DJI Phantom 2 which is a great bit of kit.

I'd reckon any of them would let you take good stills with them. We shoot moving footage of cars and stuff from time to time and its great quality.

They are simple to fly too!

Our one links back to the phone so you can see what its shooting, they probably all do this but I'm just not that familiar with all of them.

Ours has an rtb function which is handy if it gets lost, but we are never far enough away for that to have ever happened.

We took ours up to ridiculous heights too, it has bright led nav lights and these had disappeared in the heat haze.

I couldn't guess what we were at but it was damn high!

Great bits of kit man :)

@SH - hate to sound repetitive but 130k miles on an now '07 A4 diesel? Would want to see proper service history and other checks to make it legit. I'd bet it's a UK car too.

Just something to bear in mind. Did you decide not to go down the Alfa 159 route?

One for the army of BMW people, is there someone good in particular for tracking/alignment for an E46 in Cork? Or would the nearest tire shop do the same job?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭shietpilot

Since pumps.ie is down I searched for an alternative site and discovered one that hasn't been updated since 2012:

    Unleaded 95:
    161 c/l 17/06/2012
    Diesel:
    154 c/l 17/06/2012

It's mad to think that petrol was up at €1.61 per litre!

130k uses at least sounds like motorway miles, but I hear you. It is on a high side, on positive note, if it did that milage already, most likely the balancer shaft and oil pump thing should have been sorted. I'll try to get regular of that car and my friend can put it through audi dealers to check if it's done.
Anyway, it's only an offer I got. And that engine audi was pretty much the last thing I wanted to take.
If I get subaru sold before I need a car, then alfa is back on the menu.
If not, I am buying a diesel for 3.5k max and keep it for a year or two. Sell subaru meanwhile. I dropped scoobies price a bit, but I wont drop any more. Its already best for the money on donedeal and I won't rush and sell it for pennies.

So after calling axa part of their explanation for their increase is they said because the government require them(and presumably all insurance companies) to increase premiums by 15% per year.

    This can't be true?

You sure? Works out about 10K+++ miles per year. Sounds about right.

that'd be fairly low for an executive sized diesel.

you're right, works out @ 14k per year, but you have to ask yourself who bought a €50,000 diesel car in 2007 to do less than 50 miles a day when in 2007 petrol and diesel fuel were pretty much the same price, the petrol car would have been cheaper to buy and the tax on the petrol car would have been cheaper.

not saying it's definitely clocked, it could be totally legit, but worth double checking.

    Speaking of wheels...

My A6 with 18" wheels is suffering an increasingly hard ride on our deteriorating roads - plus there's always the ridiculous cost of replacing a tyre and the difficulty of finding one in the right size when you need one.

I'm thinking about dropping down to 17" instead... anyone done this? Would I notice much difference (in comfort and cost), or would I need to go to 16" for that?

    Cheers :)

I didn't think fuel was that high in 2007 I thought it was a few years later before it started getting really high. I suppose back then most didn't care about the cost because Celtic tiger and all that the good times :pac:

I started driving in 2007. I don't remember it being anywhere near that per litre in Limerick. I remember it going below the euro in 2008.

I remember it being in early one euros late 90s cents alright. I didn't start driving till 2011 so I wouldn't have remember the prices as much before then.

17s with a bigger tyre wall will certainly increase comfort and more than likely be a bit cheaper. How long would you need to keep the car to offset the price of new wheels or you planning on doing a swap?

There was some taxi driver on the radio today complaining about having to nct test his taxi every 6 months as it was over 10 years old. Tbh I think it's fair enough considering the amount of use the vehicle gets. Is there an upper limit on age ie at 15 years old it can't be a taxi ? Afaik if your beginning a career as a taxi driver the car has to be a good bit less than 10 years old maybe I'm wrong though.

It was in that filling station, which was a statoil and an extortionate one at that. Next dearest was 1.37 when everywhere else for petrol was 1.10 and I can't remember the price of weasel.

Bear in mind when I started driving that petrol was about 90 cent a litre and weasel 80 cent. When I started driving and when I got my licence were very different times

Well what I'd do is buy the 17s, fit them and then sell on the 18s to make up (hopefully most) of the cost

No, standard tyres. They're fine on the motorways or main roads, but I also do a bit of backroads at weekends and the ride gets very rough on these what with all the rain, frost and general lack of maintenance of late.

In general would most comprehensive insurance policies cover you to drive your car in the uk. I must look up the policy but just wondering is it normally the case that they would cover it a standard.

Every second mk1 focus I see is navy, but "ink blue". Mine is "deep navy". There isn't a lot in them, but still a noticeable amount if I put a mirror backing on. Don't think I've ever seen another deep navy around. Looks like I'll have to go spraying. Can't see anything on ebay or any of the forums.
