I just got a new Toshiba 1TB portable HDD. DTB310

    I've Win7 laptop

I plug it in and it says the drivers are installing.. but it doesn't appear in My Computer so I can't add anything to it.

I've checked disk management and I've attached an image of what I see.. it's just showing up as disk 1.. strange

I''ve also checked device manager and it's appearing in there.

I've uninstalled and re-installed it a few times.. and i've restarted the laptop each time etc.

I can't get it working.. I looked on toshiba's website and there's no new / extra drivers for this.

    does anyone have any ideas?

Does the drive power up at all, are there any lights on the drive? If the drive has one of those Y USB cables make sure both are plugged in, some portable drives need 2 usb ports to power them

In disk management right click the drive and assign an unused drive letter and you should be good to go.

try it in a net cafe pc,
i have 1 usb drives ,all pcs see it,
my sony laptop sees it ,see,s all the files.my dell laptop detects it,
my toshiba dual core cpu satellite laptop does not detect it.

see windows , start menu , / control panel ,administration,/
    management / storage ,
    /external drive e or f

Or try a linux live cd ,boot from cd ,
wait for os to load into memory,
    plug in external drive .

    http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=98
    burn to cdr disk.
linux may take 3-4 minutes to load from cd.

Yes it powers up.. there is a light on it.. if I uninstall the drivers and reboot / plug back in it installs drivers again.

    I'll try this when home.

I don't know where there's a net cafe.. seems like a bit of work taking it to one lol .

    I'll try the other things.

    Thanks for all the replies.

You could plug it into a library pc. or a friends pc,laptop .
Public librarys have pc,s anyone can use for web acess .
if burning a cdr use cd burning program, menu, burn image command, browse to iso file,
set burn speed to 2x or 4x.
in dealz shops, cdr 4pack cost 1.50 euro

You might have a virus, or one of the usb driver files is missing,
which controls detection and acess to external usb drives .
I fixed a pc, the driver files for keyboard control were missing ,
everything else worked fine apart from keyboard typing .
i downloaded and replaced the missing driver file,
a driver file is only a few bytes ,very small file .

You need to initialise and format the disk first through Disk Management. Have look here it explains how:

I,D expect a new external drive to be formatted in ntfs already.

When I right click I don't get the option to assign a letter,, everything is greyed out.. the only option is to delete

i have 20 plus hard drives ,3 external drives ,
my 500gig drive is not detected by my windows 7 sony laptop,
my toshiba laptop detects it works fine .
i,m running mint 17 32bit ,on the toshiba laptop.
My toshiba laptop detects all drives after 1minute,
old 2.5inch ide drives take 2-3mins to be detected .
if you download a mint iso burn it to cdr .
Boot from cd in your laptop,
wait 3minutes ,plug in drive ,
go to menu ,acessorys it,ll show drive x gig partition type, eg ntfs 32gig .

4cdr discs 1.euro 50cent in dealz or maplins shop .

if mint linux os cant see a drive its faulty or theres a loose data or power cable inside the case .
The Hard drive in the enclosure may have the data or power cable unplugged or loose .
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCS8ui-6WZY

theres 2 cables connecting enclosure pcb to the hardrive,
standard sata cables 1/4 inch wide ,
easy to plug in or plug out .

go to computer or home in mint desktop,
    or in menu,
click on drive eg sony 500gig etc or sda 1 drive 500gig
right clik on drive click open/explore drive

Every town or village has 1 or 2 net cafes,
or go to library ,pc use is free to anyone .
google area eg santry or town eg athlone where you live net cafe

Your posts (not just this one) are completely ridiculous, so if he cannot get a HDD to work you tell him to install a completely different OS or a "net cafe"? What a crock.

OP, delete and recreate the volume for the HDD in Disk Management (google it), this will more than likely resolve the issue.

Uninstall the "drivers", a standard USB drive should not require them. Most likely these drivers are just some unnecessary bloatware which Toshiba are famous for.

After this do what davo2001 suggests above. Installing other OS's is pure nonsense, it's a USB drive !

    You dont understand linux,
you download, iso image, burn to a cdr disk .
    Put cd in drive,
reboot pc, press f5 or f12, boot laptop from cd/dvd drive.
OS MINT loads into ram, it looks like windows 7.
    he,s not installing nothing,
mint does not touch the hardrive,
    click,computer,
there should be drive c ,
    and drive toshiba external ,
right click drive external, open, explore drive ,

IT loads into ram, click shutdown in menu or press hold power button for 5 seconds ,
    laptop shuts down .

You can use it as a full os while laptop is on ,it stays in the ram,
but its not installed on drive c.
it does not touch drive c at all,
unless you copy or download files to drive c ,
using the browser or the mint file manager .

    https://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/784060-the-complete-beginners-guide-to-linux

maybe your laptop has a virus or usb driver file is missing ,
When i plug any usb drive into my laptop win7 64bit,
it seems to always install device drivers ,
    than window opens ,
scan drive e external or open folder to browse files on e; drive

or go to internet cafe ,or library to make sure drive is working .
Windows has 1000,s of drivers ,
sometimes a driver file disappears, or does not load .
you may not notice until you try and do something ,
like plug in a new external drive .
because everything seems to work as before
you can browse the web, or play music files .

Like when you play a dvd in a pc you are not installing a film ,or
    making a copy of video files to drive c;

So booting a linux os into ram is similar.
It makes a temporary os run inside the ram,
as it runs from the cd ,
instead of running from a hardrive .

    No need to install anything,
    run linux from a cd r ,
blank cdr one cd cost,s 40 cent .
Some tablets android can acess a usb drive if you have a special usb cable .

I understand Linux very well actually. I've used it in many guises in the past 25 years. It's not the answer to the OPs issue. Your suggestion of another computer is however.

Davo2012 made a suggestion which is easily tiried given the OPs admitted lack of knowledge.

Linux is a fantastic OS but it is marginal and largely restricted to those with some knowledge of it
